1880s Autograph Album of Mary E. Hunt of Thorndike, Maine

1880s autograph album that belonged to Mary E. Hunt of Thorndike, Maine.

I believe Mary would later become the wife of Granville Earl Barrows of Vassalboro, Maine, whose own autograph album, compiled while he was a student at Oak Grove Seminary, was the subject of an earlier post.

See also the autograph album of Granville's second wife Ara May Woodman.

The album is approximately 4" x 3" and contains over 70 pages signed by Mary E. Hunt herself, her relatives, friends and schoolmates at Unity High School at Unity, Maine.  An alphabetical list of signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Mary E. Hunt was born about December 1867 at Thorndike, Maine, daughter of Sumner and Frances Elizabeth (Hunt) Hunt, who were both born at Thorndike, Maine.

Mary's mother Frances Elizabeth (Hunt) Hunt signed a page in the album.

Mary's paternal grandparents were Ichabod III and Mehitable (Gordon) Hunt.  Her maternal grandparents were Jonathan and Emiline (Spring) Hunt.

Mary's maternal grandmother Emiline (Spring) Hunt signed a page in 1880.

Mary's brother Wilmot Israel Hunt, or Israel Wilmot Hunt, of Thorndike, Maine, signed a page in 1880.

On 10 July 1895 at Saco, Maine, Mary E. Hunt married Granville Earl Barrows, son of William H. and Eliza Matilda (Davis) Barrows, although I'd welcome a reader's affirmation of that.

What concerns me is that on their son's birth record, her name is shown as Mae and her birthplace as Vassalboro, Maine, rather than Thorndike, as shown on her marriage record.

Mary attended Unity High School.  At some point her family moved to Vassalboro, Maine, and Mary attended Oak Grove Seminary.  She signed a page in her future husband's autograph album in 1890.

Mary/Mae and Granville made their home at Waterville, Maine where Granville operated a trucking company.  Their son Stanley was born on 18 January 1897.

Mary died 11 June 1919.  Granville later married Ara May Woodman, daughter of Fred and Helen A. (Wood) Woodman.

Several other people surnamed Hunt signed pages in her album.

Mary's uncle Thurston Hunt, brother of her mother Frances Elizabeth (Hunt) Hunt, of Hermon Center, Maine, signed a page in 1880.

I believe the Nellie B. Hunt of Hermon Center, Maine, who signed the page below in 1880, was a sister of Mary's mother and her Uncle Thurston.

Sisters Sadie M. Hunt and Annie B. Hunt of Unity, Maine, signed pages in 1880.  They were the daughters of Gustavus A. Hunt and wife Susan Ellen (Ayer) Hunt.   Gustavus and Mary's father Sumner  shared a grandfather, Ichabod Hunt, Jr.

Several of the signers indicated that they were fellow students with Mary at Unity High School.

Interestingly, my great grandmother, who also lived in Thorndike, has the same name. She was Mary Louise Hunt and was 12 years old in the 1880 census (dwelling #36 in the same census as your Mary Hunt). Her parents were Elias Darius Hunt and Lovisa (Pendleton) Hunt. Her mother passed away just a few months earlier (Sept 1879), and she was raised by her grandmother, Rachel Pendleton. She was called Louise and perhaps this is why. They must have known each other and possibly even been cousins. Perhaps she is the Mary who signed the autograph book??

    1. Could be! I'm interested in the Pendleton surname, presumably going back to the family that left Westerly, Rhode Island, for Islesboro, Maine in the 18th century?
