Cabinet Card of Unidentified Man by Bangor, Maine studio: on Reverse: July 23, 1896; 94 Years

Cabinet photograph by the J. F. Gerrity studio of Bangor, Maine, of an unidentified elderly man, with handwriting on the reverse:  July 23, 1896, 94 years.

Was this to note his birthday celebration or perhaps his death date or perhaps merely the date the photograph was taken?

This photograph was found with others, some of which have connections to Maine, New Brunswick, Michigan and Rhode Island.  Among the photographs:

If you recognize this gentleman from your family photographs and/or research, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Two Photographs of Bertie Way, Presumably Alberta Mabel Way of New Brunswick, Canada, and Escanaba, Michigan

Two photographs of a woman identified on the reverse as Bertie Way, presumably Alberta Mabel Way.  The photographs were taken by the Ford studio and the Hobb studio, both of Escanaba, Michigan.

The photograph was found with a few other photographs and a memorial card; those identified:
  • Helen Eola Mayo - of Bangor, Maine
  • David Peavey - presumably the David H. Peavey of Exeter, Maine and, thus, maternal grandfather of Helen Eola Mayo
  • Samuel A. Robinson - baby photograph; identified as father of Curtis Skolfield Robinson
  • Percy Leroy Way - by a Woodstock, New Brunswick, studio - lived for a while in Michigan
  • Maebelle White - by a Detroit, Michigan studio, but born at Hermansville, Michigan; niece of wife of Percy Leroy Way
  • Margaret White - by a Detroit, Michigan studio, but possibly born at Hermansville, Michigan; niece of wife of Percy Leroy Way
  • Cabinet card of an unidentified elderly man by the J. F. Gerrity studio of Bangor, Maine; handwriting on reverse: July 23, 1896, 94 years - was the date his birthday celebration, his death date or the date the photograph was taken?
  • Unidentified people in 8 CDVs from Bangor, Maine; Providence, Rhode Island; and Pawtucket, Rhode Island
  • 19th century photograph of students at ? School No 9, possibly Cranford

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Assuming Bertie was Alberta Mabel Way:

Alberta Mabel Way was born September 18, 1888 in York County, New Brunswick, the daughter of Rainsford Bruce Way and Josephine (Patterson) Way.   Since the Percy Leroy Way mentioned above was also born in York County, New Brunswick, there must have been a family relationship - not to mention an attraction to move to Michigan.

The family was living at Southampton parish in York County, New Brunswick at the time of the 1901 Census of Canada.  By 1910, it appears that Alberta's mother had died and her father had moved the family to Wells, Michigan. By 1930, she was married to Percy Kyle Bowers.  Alberta died in 1956 and is buried in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery at Wells, Michigan.

Photographs of Sisters Maebelle White and Margaret White of Michigan

Photographs, possibly graduation photographs, of sisters Maebelle White and Margaret White of Michigan.   The photographs were taken at the Edw. J. Arthur studio of Detroit.

The photographs and a memorial card were found with several others, some identified:
  • David Peavey, presumably David H. Peavey of Exeter, Maine
  • Helen Eola Mayo of Bangor, Maine - granddaughter of David H. Peavey
  • Sam A. Robinson - photo as a baby; identified as father of Curtis Skolfield Rovinson
  • Bertie Way [presumably Alberta Mabel Way] - by an Escanaba, Michigan studio - New Brunswick roots
  • Percy Leroy Way, by a Woodstock, New Brunswick studio - lived for a while in Michigan
  • Cabinet card of an unidentified elderly man by the J. F. Gerrity studio of Bangor, Maine; handwriting on reverse: July 23, 1896, 94 years - was the date his birthday celebration, his death date or the date the photograph was taken?
  • Unidentified people in 8 CDVs from Bangor, Maine, and Providence, Rhode Island and Pawtucket, Rhode Island
  • 19th century photograph of students at ? School No 9, possibly Cranford
The White sisters were the nieces of Percy Leroy Way's wife, Hermina (White) Way, "Minnie", sister of their father Nelson White, Jr.  Percy Leroy Way and Minnie lived at Escanaba, Michigan, before moving back and forth to nearby communities in Maine and New Brunswick.

According to her obituary, Maebelle White, "Mae", was born February 20, 1913 at Hermansville, Michigan, the daughter of Nelson White and Lillian (Bellmore) White.  The identification was apparently written by someone who didn't know that her name was spelled Maebelle.

Mae married twice: 1) Frank Rodwell, with whom she had children; 2) Edward Alexander.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Margaret White was born in Michigan about 1911, the daughter of Nelson White, Jr., and Lillian (Bellmore) White.  Margaret married Robert Bittner on September 28, 1937.

Photograph of Percy Leroy Way by Woodstock, New Brunswick studio

Photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as Percy Leroy Way.  The photograph was taken at the Wilson studio of Woodstock, New Brunswick.

The photograph was found with a few other photographs and a memorial card, including:
From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Percy Leroy Way was born June 8, 1884 at Canterbury, New Brunswick, the son of John Wallace Way and Etta Olive (Hillman) Way.  On July 4, 1908 at Escanaba, Michigan, Percy married Hermina White, "Minnie", daughter of Nelson White and Angeline (St. Vincent or Reno) White.  The Margaret White and Maebelle White mentioned above were presumably the daughters of Minnie's brother Nelson White, Jr.

Percy, a machinist, and Minnie lived for a while in Michigan and later moved between Maine and New Brunswick.  They had several children.  Leroy died in 1953 and is buried with Minnie, who died in 1985, in the Hillman Cemetery Ritchie Extension at Ritchie, New Brunswick.

Photograph on Glass of young Helen Eola Mayo of Bangor, Maine; born 1899

Photograph on glass of a young girl identified on the reverse as Helen Eola Mayo.

The photograph measures about 5-1/2" by 4"; the entire piece of glass measures almost 7-1/2" by 5".

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Helen Eola Mayo was born September 26, 1899, the daughter of plumber Benjamin Mayo and Ida A. (Peavey) Mayo.  Ida's father may have been the David Peavey, whose memorial card is featured in another post.

Also found with this photograph were photographs of:
Helen Eola Mayo's name appears in the 1913-1914 annual report of Bangor, Maine, as a student at Hannibal Hamlin School.  Eola, who apparently went by that name rather than Helen, worked as a secretary at the Bangor Public Library, according to city directories, and was involved in the Maine Library Assocation.

Eola died in 1983 and is buried with her parents and other relatives in Mount Hope Cemetery at Bangor.

1894 Memorial Card for David Peavey, Who Died in January 1894; presumably Maine

Memorial card for David Peavey, who died January 22, 1894 at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 8 days.

The card was found with a collection of photographs from Maine, Michigan, New Brunswick and Rhode Island, one of which is the photograph of Helen Eola Mayo, daughter of Benjamin W. Mayo and Ida A. (Peavey) Mayo.  Ida was the daughter of David H. Peavey and Betsey (Wentworth) Peavey.

The photographs:
  • Sam A. Robinson - baby photograph; father of Curtis Skolfield Robinson
  • Bertie Way; by an Escanaba, Michigan studio; presumably Alberta Mabel Way, who had New Brunswick roots
  • Percy Leroy Way; by a Woodstock, New Brunswick studio - he lived for a while in Michigan
  • Sisters Maebelle White and Margaret White; by a Detroit, Michigan studio but from the Hermansville, Michigan area; nieces of the wife of Percy Leroy Way
  • Cabinet card of an unidentified elderly man by the J.
Because of the inclusion of the photograph of Helen Eola Mayo in the collection, I believe that the David Peavey memorialized was her grandfather father David H. Peavey.  According to a record in Maine Deaths and Burials, 1841-1910, David H. Peavey was born about 1825 and died on January 23, 1894, a day off from that noted on the card.

This David, born possibly at Tuftonborough, New Hampshire, was the son of John S. Peavey and Salley (York) Peavey, who had moved their family to Maine by the time of the birth of their daughter Sarah, born about 1836 at Exeter, Maine.

The 1850 Census of Corinna, Maine, lists a widowed Sally with David and other siblings.  Not long after, on October 31, 1851, at Exeter, Maine, David married Betsey Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth and Hannah (Mann) Wentworth of Exeter.

David and Betsey had at least four children and lived in several Maine towns, all close or not far: Exeter; Charleston; Orneville [designated on the map below as Southeast Piscataquis]; and Garland.  They're buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Garland, Maine.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you believe that the memorial card is that of another David Peavey, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

19th Century Photograph Album of the Rouse and Bentley Families of New York, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois

19th century album of cabinet photographs, cartes de visite and tintypes from the Rouse and Bentley families of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York and other states.

The album was given by daughter Martha Esther (Bentley) Ricketts, "Meb", to her mother Evvie Eliza (Rouse) Bentley in 1901.  Whether Meb acquired the album after its creation or if she purchased an empty album and placed family photographs into the slots, I don't know.

The 1884 cabinet photograph, below, shows Meb and her parents, Alton Edward Bentley and Evvie Eliza (Rouse) Bentley.  The photograph was taken at the New York Gallery of 25 Third Street, San Francisco, California, by D. Sewell & Company.

If you have corrections and/or additions to any of the information presented here, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
