c1904 Photograph of Ira Mellen Bearce while student at University of Maine at Orono

c1904 photograph of Ira Mellen Bearce (1879-1915) of Hebron, Maine, while he was an engineering student at the University of Maine at Orono.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Ira Mellen Bearce was born 24 June 1879 at Hebron, Maine, the son of Herrick Mellen Bearce and Mary Jane (Murch) Bearce, born at Hebron, Maine, and Oxford, Maine, respectively.  Ira's middle name may have originally been Elmer, or he may have had two middle names.

On 5 July 1905 at Hebron, Maine, Ira married Maidie Moody (1876-1916), daughter of John Franklin Moody and Cornelia Buxton (Stetson) Moody.  She was born in Maine on 5 July 1876.  Her birth name may have been Mary A. Moody.  Her father was a noted Maine educator.

At the time of the 1910 Census, Ira, Maidie and their daughter Helena were living at Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where Ira was working as a school teacher.

He died at Washington, D.C. on 22 May 1915, and Maidie died of influenza on 5 April 1916 at Hebron, Maine.  Their two daughters were then brought up by Maidie's family.

  1. Moody and Sanborn are family names entwined with Bearce, John Franklin Bearce. My mother was Barbara Bearce. I have an 1800's pic of a Moody family with what looks exactly like me standing there, a very odd feeling.

  2. I can imagine! And even if there's seemingly no relationship between the viewer and the people in old photographs, some faces jump out at us with such a contemporary, expressive and familiar look. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
