Photograph of a man identified on the reverse of the folder as "Aunt Lizzie's husband Will Whitten".  The photograph was taken by the Kent studio of Brockton, Massachusetts.

 

I found more than one possibility for a Will Whitten in the Brockton area.  One was William H. Whitten, twice previously married, who became the third husband of Priscilla Elizabeth (Lucas) Haynes on November 20, 1907 at Brockton, Massachusetts.

William was born at Bowdoin, Maine, in May of 1856, the son of William and Emeline (Sheppard) Whitten.  Priscilla Elizabeth, who also went by Elizabeth P., was born July 1, 1866 at Plymouth, Massachusetts, the daughter of Abner B. Lucas and Sarah R. (Raymond) Lucas.  William H. Whitten may be the William H. Whitten, who's shown in Massachusetts Death Records as dying at Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1934.

There was also a William A. Whitten, born about August 1873 in Maine, who married Elizabeth Sherlock in 1892.  William was the son of William and Jennie (Thair, Thayer, Phair or ?).  Elizabeth was born in Massachusetts about 1871, the daughter of Daniel and May (Donahue) Sherlock.  William and Elizabeth lived at Hanson, Massachusetts, and Abingdon, Massachusetts, not far from Brockton.

c1909 Photograph, possibly Graduation Photograph, of Helen C. Greene; Bridgton Academy at North Bridgton, Maine

Note of January 30, 2016: this post was amended to reflect a reader's confirmation in the comments section that Helen was Helen Coy Greene.

Photograph, presumably a graduation photograph, of Helen Coy Greene, who was a member of the Class of 1909 at Bridgton Academy at North Bridgton, Maine.

She's mentioned in the General Catalogue of Bridgton Academy 1879-1916, featured in another post.  At the time of publication, Helen was teaching at West Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Helen Coy Greene was born at Otisfield, Maine on September 28, 1891, the daughter of George Hartley Greene and Lizzie Florence (Buck) Greene.  Helen was teaching at West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, at the time the catalog noted above was published.

Perhaps proximity explains how Helen met her future husband, Methodist minister Russell Wilson Bosworth, who was a Methodist minister at East Braintree, Massachusetts at the time of their marriage.  He was born at Whitman, Massachusetts, on November 16, 1889, the son of Henry Bosworth, Jr., and Nellie Wilson (Hill) Bosworth

Helen and Rev. Bosworth married at North Bridgton, Maine, on August 27, 1918.  They had, I think, three children, before Rev. Bosworth died October 15, 1927.

On April 23, 1944 in Maine, Helen married Howard Leslie Doty, son of Zenas H. Doty and Ida F. (Gifford) Doty of Falmouth, Massachusetts.  Howard was born March 26, 1884 at Falmouth, Massachusetts; he had previously been married to Eunice Landers and Agnes Clark.

Howard died in 1974, and Helen in 1990.

1908 Graduation Photograph of Hiram Granville Burnell of Bridgton, Maine; Bridgton Academy

1908 photograph of Hiram Granville Burnell , presumably taken the year of his graduation from Bridgton Academy.  The photograph was taken by the Murphy studio at Bridgton.

Hiram was born at Bridgton, Maine, but was living at East Rochester, New Hampshire some years later when his name appeared in the General Catalogue of Bridgton Academy 1879-1916.  Bridgton Academy, founded in 1808 and still in operation today, is located at North Bridgton, Maine.

Hiram Granville Burnell was born at Bridgton, Maine, on January 31, 1888, the son of Granville M. Burnell and Caroline M. (Corson) Burnell.  By 1910, Hiram was still at home and working as a salesman at a 5 and dime store.

On May 18, 1914 at Somersworth, New Hampshire, Hiram married Nola M. Ellis, daughter of Herbert Ellis and Carrie (McDaniel) Ellis.  Nola was born about June 1894  in Maine.  By the time Hiram completed his World War I draft registration card, he and Nola were farming at South Lebanon, Maine, presumably at the farm of Nola's parents.  Hiram had lost the index finger of his left hand.

The 1920 Census shows Hiram and Nola living in Nola's parents' home at South Lebanon, Maine.  Hiram was working in a retail store.  There no children listed for the couple.  Nor were there any children listed for them in the 1930 Census of Lebanon, Maine, in which Hiram was listed as a salesman for a grocery store.

Hiram Granville Burnell died February 13, 1932 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the High Street Cemetery at Bridgton, Maine.  Nola married Eugene G. Cox at Lebanon, Maine, on October 19, 1940; she died May 21, 1964.

Walter D. Chute was born May 31, 1891 at Harrison, Maine, the son of Quincy Mayberry Chute and Melissa D. (Lewis) Chute.  On March 21, 1912 at North Bridgton, Maine, Walter married Hazel Vera Little, daughter of Ora D. Little and Harriet M. (Libby) Little.  Hazel was born at Scarborough, Maine, on November 27, 1894.

Walter and Hazel farmed at Harrison, Maine, and had at least three children.  Walter died in 1969, and Hazel in 1979.  They're buried in the Maple Ridge Cemetery at Harrison, Maine.

Two photographs of a young woman identified as Ethel E. McNab.  One of them is further identified with "B.A. '09".  Ethel graduated from Bridgton Academy at Bridgton, Maine, in 1909, as noted in the General Catalogue of Bridgton Academy 1879-1916.

Ethel E. McNab was born about December 20, 1891 at Bartlett, New Hampshire, the daughter of Charles E. McNab and Clara (Quint) McNab, who were born at Pugwash, Nova Scotia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, respectively.

On September 2, 1919 at Lancaster, New Hampshire, Ethel, who was then teaching school, married William Leonard McCarten, son of William H. McCarten and Janette (Gray) McCarten.  William graduated in the Class of 1914 from New Hampshire College.  At the time of his marriage, he was working as a clerk but he was later involved in the lumber industry.  I noticed a discussion online that the McCarten name had originally been McCartney.

Ethel and William had at least one child, a son.  William Leonard McCarten died in 1963, and Ethel in August 1981.

Cabinet Photograph from Springvale, Maine area; Possibly Etta Lucy Gile

Cabinet photograph taken by the Philpot studio of Springvale, Maine, with two names, or possibly one, on the reverse: "Lizzie" and "Etta Gile".  Springvale is a village in the City of Sanford, Maine.

At first I had read the surname as Gill but was fortunately advised that it could also be Gile, and there just happened to be an Etta Gile in the area.

• Was the sitter Etta Gile, with the photograph intended to be given to Lizzie?
• Was the sitter Lizzie, with the photograph intended to be given to Etta?

Hopefully a reader will recognize this young woman from family photos and research and comment with her correct identity.

Etta Lucy Gile was born September 25, 1866 at Waterboro, Maine, the daughter of Nathaniel Gile and Olive (Johnson) Gile.  On October 26, 1893 at Waterboro, Maine, Etta married George A. Goodwin, son of Samuel and Sarah Ann (Johnson) Goodwin.

Etta and George lived at Springvale, Maine, where George practiced law and served for a time in the state legislature.  He ended his career as a municipal judge.  See a short biography of George A. Goodwin in Maine Biographies, published in 1928 by Harrie Badger Coe.

Etta and George had two sons.  George died in 1940, and Etta in 1956.  They're buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Springvale, Maine.

George may have been George Sabine Melcher, born February 17, 1891 at Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of William King Melcher, Jr.,  and Mary Addie (Doane) Melcher.  George became a member of the Merchant Marine and lived at various times in Massachusetts, Maine, Louisiana and Maryland, presumably in response to the needs of his career.   I didn't find a marriage record for him.

George died in 1947.  He, his sister Mary Louise Melcher and their parents are buried in Locust Grove Cemetery at Hampden, Maine.
