Two 1903-1907 Autograph Albums of Lillian Blanche Ladd of Saco, Maine; at Saco Commercial School

Two autograph albums from the era of 1903 to 1907, at least one of which, and possibly both, belonged to Lillian Blanche Ladd of Saco, Maine, while she was a student at Locke Grammar School and Saco Commercial School.

Each album has many loose pages so it's impossible to determine if the order they are in now is their original order.  Lillian inscribed a page in the smaller album that I'm not sure belonged to her, but it's possible that it was meant to be the ownership page.

Many of the inscribers mentioned they were attending the Saco Commercial School, in the Classes of 1906 to 1909.  Earlier inscriptions mentioned Locke Grammar School.

Alphabetical lists of the inscribers in each album, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Surnames in the Albums - some people inscribed pages in both albums.

The smaller and apparently earlier autograph album, shown above, measuring approximately 6-1/2" by 4-1/4", with the sentiments of nearly 60 of Lillian's relatives, friends and schoolmates - assuming it belonged to Lillian and not to one of her siblings or cousins

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Lillian Blanche Ladd was born November 12, 1891 at Saco, Maine, the daughter of Edwin Grant Ladd and Dorcas Ann (Patterson) Ladd.  On June 21, 1911 at Saco, Maine, Lillian married Frederick Henry Wildes, son of Bradbury D. Wildes and Ella M. (Fletcher) Wildes.  They had several children and moved to New York City, where Fred worked as a machinist.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Alphabetical List of Inscribers in the Smaller and Earlier Album
  • L. S. T.; inscribed on January 31, 1907
  • Vivian; inscribed on January 10, 1903.  She mentions L.C., who might be a romantic interest of Lillian.
  • Nathaniel Lee Billing of Saco, Maine; inscribed on April 11, 1904.  Spelled his given name as Nathaiel.  Most records show the surname as Billings
  • Arthur W. Bridges of Saco, Maine

  • Alice D. Ladd of Saco, Maine; inscribed on February 22, 1903.  Lillian had a sister named Alice Dorcas Ladd who was born in 1901.  Perhaps someone else wrote this inscription for Alice, maybe even Lillian herself, as it looks like her handwriting.
  • Charles Olin Ladd of Newburyport, Massachusetts; inscribed on September 7, 1903.  Lillian's cousin
  • Edw. G. Ladd of Saco, Maine.  Mentions "Your Cousin Everett", Albert; [perhaps Albert Laplume] Well.  I don't think this was Lillian's father Edwin G. Ladd, but rather her cousin, the brother of inscribers Ella M. Ladd; Lona M. Ladd and Kenneth Z. Ladd.
  • Edwin G. Ladd of Saco, Maine; inscribed on November 6, 1903.  Mentions Albert and Everett.  Presumably not Lillian's father, but her cousin, the Edw. G. Ladd who inscribed another page.

  • Mrs. Dorcas A. Ladd.  Lillian's mother Dorcas A. (Patterson) Ladd
  • Albert Laplume of Saco, Maine; inscribed on February 26 [year might be written in a corner but it's smudged].  He may have been a romantic interest for Lillian.
  • Henry H. Laplume of Saco, Maine; inscribed on December 8, 1903.  He inscribed the right facing page in 1904.

  • Mrs. Sarah E. Patterson of Saco, Maine; inscribed on February 22, 1903.  Lillian's maternal grandmother, Sarah E. (Bean) Patterson.  The way she wrote her surname, it looks more like Patteson.

  1. Lillian Ladd Wildes was my great-aunt. Her sister Alice was my grandmother. Their Uncle George lived with my grandmother and grandfather when I was a child.

  3. We have a photo from Jesse M. Goldthwaite (Class of 1906) and her schoolmates standing in front of Saco Commercial School, circa 1905-1906. It is very possible that Lillian Ladd is also in this photo.
