1885-1910 autograph album that belonged to an Ida, presumably Ida Blanche Barrows of Newburgh, Maine.
There's no ownership page, but several autographs are inscribed "To Ida". Judging from the inscribers, I believe Ida was Ida Blanche Barrows of Newburgh, Maine, though there were several other young women named Ida in the area. Readers are invited to propose a theory as to Ida's identity.
The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 40 of Ida's relatives and friends. An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.
From brief online research, and assuming Ida was Ida Blanche Barrows - corrections, additions and alternate theories of Ida's identity requested:
According to her Find a Grave memorial, Ida Blanche Barrows was born January 22, 1872 to Pelatiah Boyington and Abbie. Whether Pelatiah's surname was Barrows or whether Abbie's surname was Barrows, I don't know. On March 31, 1895 at Newburgh, Maine, Ida married Arthur Luce Tolman, son of George A. Tolman and Alice S. (Tinney) Tolman.
Macellus Tinney, postmaster at Newburgh, Maine, indicated in the inscription he made at Newburgh on March 20, 1898, that he was Ida's uncle. Not Ida's blood uncle, but the maternal uncle of Ida's husband Arthur Luce Tolman.
Arthur Luce Tolman's brother, William A. Tolman, inscribed a page at South Newburgh, Maine, on November 13, 1887.
Arthur's brother Jessie Benjamin Tolman of South Newburgh, Maine, inscribed a page on February 13, 1892.
Ida and Arthur lived in various towns in Maine and had at least two children, daughters Agnes and Beatrice. Arthur, who died in 1946, and Ida, who died in 1961 are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Milo, Maine.
One page represented the sentiments of the Flinn family of Indianapolis, Indiana, which left an inscription on September 23, 1888.
