1860s/1870s Autograph Album of Student at Maine Wesleyan Seminary & Female College at Kents Hill, Readfield, Maine; Presumably Owned by John Howard Chandler

Autograph album with inscriptions from the 1860s and 1870s from faculty and students at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary and Female College at Kents Hill in Readfield, Maine.  The site is now home to Kents Hill School.

There's no ownership page, but it's possible the owner was John Howard Chandler of Winthrop, Maine for the following reasons:

  • The last end paper was inscribed by J. H. Chandler.
  • One inscriber, Emma Chandler, called herself the owner's sister, though, granted, she may have meant social sister in the campus organizations M.Y.O.B. & C.D.S.  Emma may have been Mary Emma Chandler, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Oakes) Chandler, both of whom also inscribed pages in the album, and sister of John Howard Chandler.

  • A fair number of the inscribers in the album gave Winthrop, Maine, as their residence.
The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4" and contains the sentiments of over 80 people, most of them apparently faculty members and students at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary and Female College.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, in case the album was owned by Joseph Howard Campbell of Winthrop, Maine - corrections and additions requested

John Howard Chandler was born about 1848, the son of Joseph Chandler and Mary (Oakes) Chandler.  I believe it was this John who married Emily H. Metcalf on January 1, 1874.

If you have further information on John Howard Chandler, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
