1880s Autograph Album of Sophia D. Morgan of Upper Gloucester, Maine; at Hebron Academy at Hebron, Maine

1880s autograph album of Sophia D. Morgan, or Sophia H. D. Morgan, of Upper Gloucester, Maine, with many of the inscriptions acquired from fellow students at Hebron Academy at Hebron, Maine.

See other posts that feature catalogs and student publications at Hebron Academy, including those produced during the same time frame and which include many of the inscribers' names.  Click here and scroll down to the items listed for Hebron, Maine.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and includes the sentiments of 99 of Sophia's relatives, friends, schoolmates, teachers and parson.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Sophia H. D. Morgan was born May 2, 1863 at New Gloucester, Maine - assuming the "Copy of an Old Record of a Birth" is correct.  It appears that many New Gloucester, Maine, records are copies only and contain very little information.

Sophia's parents were Henry Morgan and Sophia H. (Dawes) Morgan.  Sadly, mother Sophia H. (Dawes) Morgan lived only a few days past her daughter Sophia's birth, and Henry died in 1874.  The 1870 Census of New Gloucester, Maine, lists Sophia and her father Henry in the household of Henry's parents, Luke and Sarah Morgan.  By 1880, the orphaned Sophia was listed in the household of her maternal grandparents, Thomas J. Dawes and Eliza (Emery) Dawes.

Several other people named Dawes, Morgan and Whitman inscribed pages in Sophia's album:
  • A. J. Dawes of New Gloucester, Maine; inscribed on January 28, 1882.  Presumably Adoniram Judson Dawes, whose wife Emma Elizabeth (Nelson) Dawes inscribed the right facing page.
  • Ella C. Dawes of Boston, Massachusetts; inscribed at Upper Gloucester, Maine, on July 16, 1881.  Luella C. (King) Dawes, wife of James Dawes.  Presumably related by marriage to Sophia's mother Sophia H. (Dawes) Morgan
  • Mrs. E. N. Dawes; inscribed on January 29. 1882.  The name Sophia is written in the lower right corner.  She was Emma Elizabeth (Nelson) Dawes, whose husband Adoniram Judson Dawes inscribed the left facing page.
  • J. S. Dawes of Boston, Massachusetts; inscribed at Upper Gloucester, Maine, on July 16, 1881
  • Mrs. E. F. Morgan of 208 Princeton Street, East Boston, Massachusetts.  Presumably  Catherine, wife of Elliott F. Morgan, as the 1880 Census shows them living on Princeton Street.
  • Mary G. Morgan; inscribed at Upper Gloucester, Maine, on December 2, 1881.  Presumably Mary Georgia Morgan, daughter of Elisha M. Morgan and Rosilla (Tucker) Morgan
  • W. P. Morgan of Walnut Hill, North Yarmouth, Maine; "Old Batchelor".  Perhaps William P. Morgan, son of Pitman Morgan and Abigail (Dyer) Morgan

Perhaps a reader will leave a comment clarifying the relationships.

Mrs. Ava A. Thurlow of Poland Corner, Maine; inscribed a page on April 13, 1882 and indicated she was Sophia's cousin.

On February 21, 1884, Sophia H. D. Morgan married Lester Leavitt Whitman of Turner, Maine; Lester had also attended Hebron Academy, during which time he inscribed a page in Sophia's album.

The marriage was performed by Rev. Joel R. Herrick, who had earlier inscribed a page in Sophia's album at the Parsonage on July 11, 1881.  He noted in his inscription that she had been baptized on July 11, 1881.

Two other people named Whitman inscribed pages in the album:
  • Lizzie M. Whitman of Turner, Maine; inscribed at Hebron Academy on September 27, 1881.  The word "room-mates" straddles this and the facing page of Lizzie's roommate Rillia M. Baird of Turner Centre, Maine.  Lizzie was the sister of Sophia's husband Lester Leavitt Whitman.
  • Nellie L. Whitman of Hebron, Maine; inscribed on April 5, 1881
Sophia and Lester lived with Sophia's grandparents at New Gloucester.   Lester operated his sled business, which he had started at Turner, Maine, nearby.  At some point before 1910, Sophia and Lester moved to Pasadena, California.  I believe Sophia died in 1917 and Lester in 1929.

If you have corrections, clarifications or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
