1895 Wedding Photograph of Frank M. Forristall and Mary Cater of Alstead, New Hampshire; taken by a studio at Keene, New Hampshire

Photograph taken on the occasion of the 2 September 1895 marriage of Frank M. Forristall and his second wife Mary Cater at Alstead, New Hampshire; photograph by the White studio of Keene, New Hampshire.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Frank M. Forristall was born in April 1857 at Alstead, New Hampshire, son of Joseph P. Forristall and Mary A. (Flint) Forristall, both natives of Winchendon, Massachusetts.  Frank married Julia May Clapp, a native of Huntington, Massachusetts, in 1878; they had three children.  Julia died in 1895.

See another post that features a photograph of students in the school in District 6 of Alstead, New Hampshire, two of whom were Frank M. Forristall's children with Julia:
  • Florence M. Forristall
  • Leslie P. Forristall
Yet another post features a photograph of Ralph Wayne Forristall (1888-1964), youngest child of Frank and Julia, in the summer before Ralph's third birthday.

Frank's second wife, Mary Stella (Cater) Forristall, was born in Alstead, New Hampshire, on 2 August 1874, the daughter of George E. Cater and Rhoena Aurelia (French) Cater, born in Alstead, New Hampshire, and Montgomery, Vermont, respectively.  [erroneously reported as a male].  Frank and Mary had at least one child.

1892 Photograph of Students in District School #6 at Alstead, New Hampshire; plus 2 Photos of Teacher Nettie Sophia Robinson, 1883 and 1890

Wonderful photograph of students and perhaps teacher in the school in District 6 at Alstead, New Hampshire, dated January 7, 1892, and two cabinet photographs of Nettie Sophia Morrison, presumably the teacher in the back row.

Nettie Sophia Morrison in 1890

The students and teacher are identified on the reverse, presumably left to right, not in rows.
  • Aurilla M. Bean
  • Chester W. Demerse
  • Edith E. Hartwell
  • John G. Supple
  • Florence M. Forristall - see a post that features a 1895 wedding photograph of Florence's father Frank M. Forristall and second wife Mary (Cater) Forristall; and a post that features a photograph of Florence's younger full sibling, Ralph Wayne Forristall (1888-1964)
  • Leslie P. Forristall - see a post that features a 1895 wedding photograph of Leslie's father Frank M. Forristall and second wife Mary (Cater) Forristall; and a post that features a photograph of Leslie's younger full sibling, Ralph Wayne Forristall (1888-1964)
  • John A. Smith
  • Nettie S. Morrison - presumably the teacher - see cabinet photographs below
  • Beatrice M. Porter
  • Katie A. Supple
  • Warren H. Porter
  • Marcia A. Smith

The teacher was presumably Nettie Sophia Morrison, born 18 January 1865 at Alstead, New Hampshire, daughter of Andrew Morrison and Julia V. (Kidder) Morrison.  Two photographs of Nettie were found with the school photograph, one taken in 1883 and another in 1890.

Nettie married Clinton Jesse Gates, or Jesse Clinton Gates, at Alstead on 16 December 1896. He was born at Keene, New Hampshire, son of Roscoe E. Gates and Nellie (Porter) Gates.

In the 1910 Census, Jesse/Clinton noted his occupation as a contractor to carry the mail and his marital status as a widower. Not long after this enumeration, he died of heart disease at age 37 in September 1910 at Alstead. I haven't found a record of Nettie's death, which, if Jesse/Clinton was indeed a widower in 1910, had to have happened between 1900 and 1910.

The FindaGrave memorial for a Nettie M. Gates (1865-3 May 1948) buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Ocala, Florida, is presumably that for a Rhode Island native, wife of Arthur G. Gates.

More Morison/Morrison genealogy is found in the book The history of the Morison or Morrison family with most of the "Traditions of the Morrisons" (clan MacGillemhuire), hereditary judges of Lewis, by Capt. F. W. L. Thomas, of Scotland, and a record of the descendants of the hereditary judges to 1880. A complete history of the Morison settlers of Londonderry, N.H., of 1719, and their descendants, with genealogical sketches. Also, of the Brentwood, Nottingham, and Sanbornton, N.H. Morisons, and branches of the Morisons who settled in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Nova Scotia, and descendants of the Morisons of Preston Grange, Scotland, and other familiesby Leonard Allison Morrison (1843-1902); Frederick William Leopold Thomas; published in 1880.

If you have information on any of the people in the photograph, especially if you have information on the teacher, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1902 Photograph of Stuart W. Hanson; by a Boston, Massachusetts, Studio; Possibly Stuart Waldo Hanson (1883-1959)

Photograph, presumably a graduation photograph, of a young man identified on the reverse as Stuart W. Hanson, who graduated from M.A.H.S. in 1902.

The first initial of the high school may not be M, but, if an H, it looks different from the H in Stuart's surname.

Stuart may have been Stuart Waldo Hanson (1883-1959), a Boston resident who went on to the University of Maine, where he graduated in 1905 or 1906 (records differ).  According to a mention in a 1959 UM Alumni publication, Stuart lived in Boston until 1957, when he moved to Denver, Colorado. He died at Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1959, survived by his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

According to a record in the database Massachusetts, Mason Membership Cards 1733-1990, Stuart Waldo Hanson, a master painter, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1883, and lived in the Hyde Park, section. He was the son of Christian F. W. Hanson and Sarah M. (Swenson) Hanson.

In 1909 at Hyde Park, Stuart married Ida de Webber Boynton, daughter of Henry Jones and Emma L. (Smith) Jones and adopted daughter of Charles A. Boynton.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you recognize Stuart as someone other than Stuart Waldo Hanson, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Photograph of a Young Woman by a Waltham, Massachusetts Studio; possibly Maine Native Eva M. Warren, wife or future wife of Arthur Francis Wisner

Photograph of a young woman in an elegant dress; by a studio in Waltham, Massachusetts. The photograph has the name Authur [sic] Francis Wisner on the reverse.

It's possible that the woman in the photograph is the then wife or future wife of Arthur Francis Wisner (1874-1955).  She was Maine native Eva M. Warren (1872-1957), born in the White Rock section of Gorham, Maine, daughter of James E. Warren and Martha Jane (Godfrey) Warren.

Arthur was born at Natick, Massachusetts, the son of Charles F. Wisner and Anna R. (Hickox) Wisner.

Eva and Arthur married in 1898 in Los Angeles, California.  After their marriage, they lived in Waltham, Massachusetts; Flint, Michigan; Rockland, Maine; Natick, Massachusetts; and back to Rockland, Maine. Eva died in 1951, and Arthur in 1955; they're buried in the Achorn Cemetery at Rockland, Maine.

Wedding Photograph Taken by Gay's Studio at Fall River, Massachusetts; Possibly of Elias Makinen and Elina Wehkamaki, later of South Thomaston, Maine

Wedding photograph taken by Gay's Studio at Fall River, Massachusetts.

The reverse is full of handwriting, but hard to make out. The groom's name appears to be Elias Mak? Most of the writing appears to be a description of the couple's attire, perhaps to help the studio in a colorization process.

Interestingly, Elias Makinen (1871-1931) and Elina E. Wehkamaki (1877-1960), both natives of Finland, married at Fall River, Massachusetts, on 11 November 1898. Their parents were listed as Elias Makinen and Maria Hernaho; and Erik Wehkamaki and Lovissa Sorvari.

Elias and Elina found their way to South Thomaston, Maine, presumably because of the opportunities in that area for Elias, a quarryman, as noted on his marriage record.

If you recognize this couple as Elias and Elina Makinen or another couple from your family photographs, or if you can transcribe the writing on the reverse, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
