1870s Autograph Album of Mary Ellen Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts, 2 of 2

1870s autograph album of Mary Ellen Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts.

This album was found with another autograph album compiled by Mary Ellen Sumner in the 1870s and with the album of Mary Ellen's daughter, Pauline Sumner Howard, with sentiments collected at home at Mattapan and at college.

I'm not sure if the Mary Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts, who signed a page on August 2, 1874, was Mary Ellen Sumner, or another Mary Sumner, but she signed the page just after the title page.  As you can see from the traces of glue on the page below, several of the pages were stuck together.

The album measures approximately 6-1/2" x 4" and contains the sentiments of nearly forty of Mary Ellen's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Mary Ellen Sumner was born 2 August 1863 at Brookline, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ebenezer and Laura Ann (Hopkins) Sumner, who were born at Sharon, Massachusetts, and Brewster, Massachusetts, respectively.

Her mother, Laura Ann (Hopkins) Sumner signed a page in Mary Ellen's other album, as did Laura's brother Warren Henry Hopkins of Orleans, Massachusetts.

On 22 December 1881 at Boston, Massachusetts, Mary Ellen Sumner married Frederic Theodore Howard, son of Daniel J. and Almira Eliza (Hood) Howard.  Frederic was born 9 January 1859 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Interestingly, there was an F. T. Howard who signed one of the last pages in Mary Ellen's album at Milton, Massachusetts, in 1881, and sketched a bird.  Perhaps this was Frederick Theodore Howard, who signed either before or after their marriage.

Mary Ellen (Sumner) Howard and Frederick Theodore Howard would have a daughter, Pauline Sumner Howard, whose autograph album was found with the two albums of her mother.

Another fancy sketch was done by signer ? A. Thompson, who sketched a two birds on November 15, 1871.

The last page in the album, signed by E. F. Sumner of Methuen, Massachusetts, had a four-leaf-clover pasted on the page.

Other signers with the surname of Hopkins or Sumner signed pages in Mary Ellen's album; refer to the list of signers below.

1870s Autograph Album of Mary Ellen Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts, 1 of 2

1870s autograph album of Mary Ellen Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts.  Her name was incorporated into a fancy design by Thomas Tyrrell on July 4, 1875.

This album was found with another album compiled by Mary Ellen Sumner in the 1870s and with the album of Mary Ellen's daughter Pauline S. Howard of Mattapan, with sentiments collected while she was at home and while at college.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 50 of Mary Ellen Sumner's relatives, friends and schoolmates.

Laura Ann (Hopkins) Sumner signed at least one page in her daughter's album, if not two.  She signed a page as "Mother", on what looks like March 7, 1896, but could have been 1876.  She lived past 1896, however, and may have taken the opportunity to sign a page in the album, which had recently come to light.  And she may have been the L. A. Sumner who signed a page at Boston, Massachusetts, on February 3, 1875.

Mary Ellen's maternal grandmother, Pamelia (Thorp) Hopkins, signed a page in the album and indicated she was "age 93 yrs 3 mos" [possibly 8 mos.].  Pamelia, who was born about 1783, would live for another ten years or so after she signed this page.  I noticed that many trees had her name as Pamela, but her name above appears to be Pamelia.

The W. H. Hopkins of Orleans, Massachusetts who signed a page may have been Laura Ann (Hopkins) Sumner's brother, Warren Henry Hopkins.

On 22 December 1881 at Boston, Massachusetts, Mary Ellen Sumner married Frederic Theodore Howard, son of Daniel J. and Almira Eliza (Hood) Howard.  Frederic was born 9 January 1859 at Boston, Massachusetts.  Frederic signed a page in Mary Ellen's other album, featured in another post.

They would have a daughter, Pauline Sumner Howard, who would compile her own autograph album, also featured in its own post.

Several other people named Sumner or Hopkins signed pages in the album; refer to the list of signers below. Alice E. Sumner of Mattapan, Massachusetts, chose the last page in the album for her sentiment and sketch of September 22, 1876.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1870s Autograph Album of Lois, possibly Lois Viola Gilbert of Leeds, Maine

Update:  Please see the comment section where a reader provides more evidence that the owner of the album was most likely Lois Viola Gilbert of Leeds, Maine.

1870s autograph album that belonged to a Lois from Lewiston, Maine, or possibly Leeds, Maine, or Poland, Maine, which many of the signers indicated as their residences.

The album is approximately 6-1/2" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 44 of Lois' relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Sadly, the album is lacking a title page and any page that might have provided Lois' surname.  The first signed page in the album was that of Rosa at Lewiston, Maine, signed on September 12, 1872.  Rosa indicated that she was Lois' sister.

The only other page that indicated a family relationship with Lois was that signed at Lewiston, Maine, on June 8, 1873, by "Mother", who also did not give her surname, nor even her given name.

I tried looking for a family with siblings Lois and Rosa in the towns of Lewiston, Leeds and Poland and found a few.  One instance was the Gilbert family of Leeds, Maine, with siblings Lois and Rosa.  Rosa married Mellen J. Hanscom, who signed a page in the album directly after the page signed by "Mother".  It's a tempting speculation.  [Note: see the comments section where a reader mentions more signers with a connection to Lois Viola Gilbert of Leeds, Maine.]

Several other people with the surname Gilbert signed pages

  • M. B. Gilbert, who signed page on April 5, 1874
  • P. S. Gilbert
  • Carrie L. Gilbert

Other than Lewiston, Leeds and Poland, signers came from New Gloucester; North Yarmouth; Empire [though I think that's in Poland]; and Auburn in Maine; and from Lowell, Billerica and East Boston in Massachusetts.

Jennie Lathrop signed a page at East Boston, Massachusetts, on October 21, 1872.

F. W. Strout signed a page at Empire, Maine; I believe this was the "Empire" located in or near Poland, Maine.

Lydia White signed a page at Billerica, Massachusetts, on October 29, 1879.

George Pottle of Lewiston, Maine, signed a page on May 14, 1875.

William M. Tefft of Bangor, Maine, signed a page.

Rosa Tefft Pulsifer of Leeds, Maine, signed a page on December 12, 1876.

1880s Autograph Album of Isaac Thornton of Lincoln, Ohio, and Harrison, Ohio, in Gallia County

Note: text in bold in the text and in the list of signers reflects the additional information provided by a reader.

1880s autograph album that belonged to Isaac Thornton of Lincoln, Ohio, and, later, Harrison, Ohio, both in Gallia County.  Isaac signed several pages.  See a photograph of Isaac here.

The album is approximately 6" x 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 40 of Isaac's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Isaac E. Thornton was born 4 December 1855 at Moody, Ohio, the son of Henry Warden Thornton and Susannah (Dewitt) Thornton.

Two of Isaac's siblings signed pages in the album.  His sister Hannah Thornton of Lincoln, Ohio:

Isaac's brother Firman Thornton of Lincoln, Ohio:

Isaac's cousin Abraham Dewitt signed a page.  He was the son of Isaac Dewitt, who was a brother to Isaac Thornton's mother, Susannah (Dewitt) Thornton.

On 4 June 1885, Isaac E. Thornton married Mary Ann Saunders, daughter of John Anderson Saunders and Elizabeth Frances (Martt) Saunders.  Mary Ann signed pages in Isaac's album before and after their marriage.  She signed a page as M. A. Saunders of Saundersville, Ohio.

She signed a page as M. A. Thornton of Moody PO, Gallia County, Ohio, on July 9, 1885, just over a month after her marriage.

The latest autograph in the album apparently occurred after the album came to light in the early 1900s.  It was signed by Virgie May Thornton, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Ann (Saunders) Thornton, on November 22, 1907.

By 1900, Isaac, Mary Ann and their six children were living at Harrison, Ohio.  Isaac died in 1937.  Mary Ann had predeceased him in 1933.  Isaac was a school teacher for a few years; then after his marriage he settled on a small farm. He also ran a hotel there in Gallia Co., Ohio for a while. He and his family were members of the Mt. Carmel and Lincoln Chapel Methodist churches in Galllia Co.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

  • Firman Thornton of Lincoln, Ohio; younger brother of album owner Isaac Thornton and older brother of signer Hannah Thornton
  • M. A. Thornton, signed at Moody, Gallia County, Ohio, on July 9, 1885.  Likely, Mary Ann (Saunders) Thornton, who had become Isaac's wife the previous month.  The handwriting is very similar.

  • Isaac N. Wood of Mercersville, Ohio   [Isaac N. Wood is the son of Robert and Hannah (DeWitt) Wood. Hannah was a sister of Isaac DeWitt.  Isaac DeWitt and Hannah DeWitt were children of John and Sarah (Loucks) DeWitt. 1880s/1910 Autograph Album that Belonged to Carrie of Troy, New York area; she later married Antoine Wheeler

1880s autograph album that belonged to a Carrie, possibly Carrie Schneider; later autographs from her children identify her as the Carrie who married Antoine Wheeler of Vermont, New York and Rhode Island.

The album is missing some pages at the front, including a title page and any page that might have had Carrie's full name on it.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the names of 32 of Carrie's friends and relatives; her children signed multiple pages.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Carrie was born about 1862 in Germany and came to the United States, presumably with her family, a couple years later or so.

She married Antoine Wheeler about 1887.  Antoine, the son of cabinet maker Antoine Wheeler and Elmira (Charron or Nairborne) Wheeler, was born 1863 in Vermont.  His parents moved to Hamilton, New York, because of the educational opportunities there for their children.  Elmira was widowed when she still had young children and managed to raise her children through sheer hard work, according to a reminiscence on an online tree.  Two of her children died young in accidents, one from being kicked by a horse and the other from a gunshot.

Children of Antoine and Carrie (Schneider) Wheeler, I think:
  1. Herbert, born about 1889; died about 1901
  2. Agnes P., born about about June 1892
  3. Zoe Valeria, born about 1893
  4. Elma Dorothy, born about March 1895
  5. William, born about 1896
  6. Carrie M., born about January 1898
  7. Charles Henry, born 14 November 1900

Carrie and Antoine and children were living at Smyrna Village, New York at the time of the enumeration of the 1900 Census.  Antoine was working as a day laborer.

By 1910, the family was living at Richmond, Rhode Island, with the addition of son Henry.  Antoine was working as a wagon driver.  By this time, Herbert had died, and Agnes was not listed in the household.

By 1920, Antoine, Carrie and son Henry were living at Hopkinton, Rhode Island, where they were running a farm.  Antoine was listed as a pedlar in the 1925 Rhode Island Census of Hopkinton.

Antoine died at some point before 1935, when the Rhode Island Census of Hopkinton lists just Carrie.  By 1940, Carrie was living at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her son William, as shown in the 1940 Census.

A few examples of the earlier autographs, collected before Carrie's marriage to Antoine Wheeler:

Michael Comiskey of Troy, New York, signed a page on January 12, 1884.

Ida A. Kelley of Ansonia, Connecticut, signed a page on May 23, 1884, at Troy, New York.

Maggie D. Martin of Fonda, New York, signed a page on August 27, 1885.

Kate M. Schuyler signed a page at Hickory House, Fonda, New York,
on August 23, 1885.

Apparently the album came to light again in after 1900 and was signed by several of Carrie's children, some multiple times.  Daughter Elma signed a page on November 11, 1906.

Daughter Merrie Wheeler signed a page on December 28, 1909, and another on December 28, 1909.  I'm not sure which of the children was nicknamed Merrie, possibly

Daughter Carrie Wheeler signed a page at Wyoming, Rhode Island, on October 6, 1905.

There are other pages obviously signed by children but unsigned.
