1888-1918 Autograph Album of Mary A. Walters of Hiawatha, Kansas; Before & After Marriage to Willis E. Justice

1888-1918 autograph album that belonged to Mary A. Walters of Hiawatha, Kansas, with inscriptions in the early 1900s and 1918 from Mary's son Harold Dwight Justice.

The album, which measures approximately 6" by 3-1/2", is missing its covers and perhaps some pages from the front and back.  It contains the sentiments of about 20 of Mary's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Mary A. Walters was born about September 1876, the daughter of Morgan Walters and Hannah Anne (Morgan) Walters.  Mary had, I believe, four siblings, all of whom inscribed pages in her album.

John Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on March 28, 1888.  Mary's brother

Sarah J. Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on November 25, 1888.  Mary's sister

David Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Mary's brother David

Emma L. Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on January 28, 1897.  Mary's sister.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship relationship:
  • Uncle David; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, in Brown County, on March 29, 1888
  • Evan Evans; inscribed on January 20, 1889.  Mary's cousin
  • Lazarus Morgan; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on March 29, 1888.  Mary's cousin
Tucked in the album, the funeral notice of Mrs. Effie Elliott, who died in December 1945 and was buried in the Hiawatha Cemetery at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Presumably Effie (Scull) Elliott.

On January 4, 1905 in Brown County, Kansas, Mary Ann Walters married Willis Earl Justice of Ohio.  They lived in Brown County, Kansas, and had at least two children, one of whom, Harold Dwight Justice, inscribed two pages in his mother's album.

Mary, who died in 1960, and Willis, who died in 1974, are buried in the Hiawatha Cemetery at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Their Find-a-Grave memorials feature a photograph of each.
