1874 Autograph Album of Mary Carmichael, Student at National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio

1874 autograph album with inscriptions acquired by owner Mary Carmichael while she was a student at the National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio.   Inscribers hailed mostly from Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Reader "Griff" has given permission for the use of a photograph of Alfred Holbrook, center, first principal of National Normal School, and several others from the school, a few of whom, including Alfred Holbrook, inscribed pages in the album.  Refer to the list of inscribers at the end of this post.

Sadly, there are no ownership, presentation and/or title pages present in the album, nor have any of the inscribers expressed a kinship to her.  The only clues I have to Mary's identity are the pages inscribed "to Mary" and to "Miss Carmichael" and to the page inscribed by Mary's roommate "Lib".  If only Lib had been more forthcoming with her personal information.

The page below was inscribed by M. M. Highley at National Normal School in 1874.

The page below was inscribed by Alfred Holbook, a Connecticut native who was the first principal of the National Normal School.   The Anna Holbrook who inscribed a page was presumably his daughter, perhaps a classmate to Mary Carmichael.

1880s autograph album that belonged to Mattie A. Bailey, presumably of Logan County, Kentucky, and presumably a student at Pleasant Grove Academy and Logan Female College, which some of the inscribers cited.

The album was given to Mattie by Lula L. Hausford.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 40 of Mattie's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teacher, two of whom inscribed more than one page.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Sadly, many people left only a given name or a nickname.

I'm not sure which of the several instances of a Mattie A. Bailey the album owner is.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in with a theory, based on the following clues:

1880s autograph album that belonged to Mary Dickie Carr of Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

The album, which measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4", contains the sentiments of 55 of Mary's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Mary Dickie Carr was born on June 23, 1876, at Livermore, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Rev. William Brainard Carr and Sarah F. (Dickie) Carr.    Mary provided her the date and place of her birth in her marriage record to James Albert McComb.

Mary's father inscribed the first page after the title page and noted that the day he inscribed it, June 23, 1884 was his daughter's 8th birthday.

On October 22, 1903 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Mary Dickie Carr marred James Albert McComb, as noted above.  They had at least one child.  James, a banker, died in 1922 and Mary in 1960.  I believe they're buried in the Unity Cemetery at Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Many of the pages are inscribed "to Laura", but the page that identified her was that inscribed by her mother Martha Ellen (John) Finnie at Collins, Iowa, on January 30, 1893.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" by 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 24 of Laura's relatives, friends and schoolmates, from Iowa and Nebraska.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to her Find-a-Grave memorial, Laura Marilla Finnie was born June 20, 1872 in Story County, Iowa, the daughter of George Sylvanus Finnie and Martha Ellen (John) Finnie.  On December 1, 1895 at Maxwell, Iowa, Laura married George Harrison Holmes.   Again from Find-a-Grave, George was born August 16, 871, also in Story County, Iowa, the son of Henry Dobson Holmes and Mary Ellen (Cockin) Holmes.

The John E. Holmes who inscribed a page at Collins, Iowa, on January 23, 1893, was presumably George Harrison Holmes' brother John Edward Holmes.

Laura and George had at least one child, daughter Mary Ellen Holmes, who was born February 11, 1899 at Collins, Iowa, according to Iowa, County Births, 1880-1935.   George died in 1950 and Laura in 1955.

1880s Autograph Album of Sarah B. Siebert of Canada, Kansas

1880s autograph album that belonged to Sarah B. Siebert of Canada, Kansas.   Canada, Kansas got its name from the numerous Canadian natives who settled there, Sarah being one of them.

Sarah inscribed several pages throughout the album.  The facing pages shown below are the inside front cover and the first page of text present - there may have been pages that are lost.  The welcome page is the next present page of text.  Sarah's confusing use of "S"s occurs throughout most of the pages she inscribed.

The album measures approximately 4-1/4" by 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 40 people, though some of those who called themselves Sarah might have been Sarah B. Siebert herself.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Sarah B. Siebert was born about October 1875 in Canada, the daughter of Christ Siebert and Barbara (Yagge) Siebert.  Several of Sarah's siblings inscribed pages in her album: sisters Edith, Maryann; and Matilda.

According to an article in the March 13, 1896 issue of the Marion Record newspaper, John Siebert and the "Misses Clara and Sarah Siebert" suffered a carriage accident while returning from church.  Sarah was the most seriously injured.

I believe it was this Sarah B. Siebert who married Lee Bruce Swinford and moved with him to Washington State, where they had at least two children.  If you have more information on Sarah Siebert and her later life, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
