1885-1902 Autograph Album of, Presumably, Ellen (Ryan) McCann of Fall Brook, Pennsylvania & Syracuse, New York; from Before and After 1888 Marriage to John F. McCann

Autograph album with inscriptions to Nellie and Nell, dated from 1885 to 1902.

I believe the owner was Ellen (Ryan) McCann of Fall Brook, Pennsylvania, and Syracuse, New York, from before and after her 1888 marriage to John F. McCann.  Nellie inscribed the ownership page, when she was living at 117 Milton Avenue, Syracuse, New York.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 21 of Nellie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Clues to Mrs. J. F. McCann's identity:

• Censuses of Syracuse, New York, showing Nellie, born about September 1871 in Ireland, living with husband John F. McCann or Frank McCann
• Marriage record of John F. McCann, age 21, and Ellen Ryan, age 17, both never married and both of Fall Brook, Pennsylvania; marriage at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, on May 2, 1888 at St. Andrews Church Blossburg.  John's father is shown as John McCann; Ellen's father is shown as Thomas Ryan.
• Cousin - Nora Moloney; inscribed at Syracuse, New York, on December 29, 1886
• Cousin -  Mary E. Dwyer; inscribed at Fall Brook, Pennsylvania, on January 19, 1896.  Perhaps the same Mary Dwyer who inscribed another page in 1885.
• Nephew - James Nugent; inscribed on January 22, 1896.  
• Niece - Mae A. Nugent of Fall Brook, Pennsylvania; inscribed at Fall Brook, Pennsylvania, on January 20, 1896.   I'm not sure of the inscriber's first name; if you feel the name is something different, please leave a comment.

The J. F. M. who inscribed a page "To Nell" on February 3 [no year written] might have been John F. McCann.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Assuming Mrs. J. F. McCann was Ellen (Ryan) McCann, "Nellie":  She was the daughter of Thomas Ryan of Fall Brook, Pennsylvania; her mother may have been Catherine (Nolan) Ryan.    It's interesting to note that Fall Brook, Pennsylvania, in Tioga County, was developed in the 1860s for coal production.  Perhaps the 1885 inscriptions from Fall Brook are an indication that the Ryan Family and/or the McCann family may have been drawn there because of job opportunities.  Eventually coal production ended at Fall Brook, and the town ceased to exist.

I believe John F. McCann died in 1932, but I haven't found a record of that.  If you have further information on the McCann and Ryan families or a theory as to a different identity for Mrs. J. F. McCann of Syracuse, New York, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1857-1863 Autograph Album of Mary F. Lawrence, "Fannie", Student in South Carolina, perhaps at Yorkville Female Institute

1857 to 1863 autograph album kept by Mary F. Lawrence, "Fannie", who appears to have been a student at a school for young women, presumably at York, South Carolina.

The album was presented to Fannie M. Lawrence, or Mary Frances Lawrence, by her father, whose name was not given.  He may have been Allen G. Lawrence of York, South Carolina.

Fannie may have attended the Yorkville Female Institute, also known as Yorkville Female College.  Read more about the Yorkville Female Institute on this post from the blog Roots and Recall.  At least three of the inscribers are mentioned here, though the name of one student, Fannie Douglass, is misspelled as Nannie.  Fannie Douglass was the only inscriber to dedicate her page to "Mary", rather than "Fannie".

The album, which was published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. of Philadelphia, measures approximately 8" by 6-1/4" and contains four pages with color designs interspersed throughout and the sentiments of 38 of Fannie's relatives, friends and fellow students from South Carolina and North Carolina.

An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  Mary F. Lawrence, "Fannie", wrote her name on the title page; or perhaps her name was written by her father.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

If I have the correct "Fannie", Mary F. Lawrence, presumably Mary Frances Lawrence or Mary Fannie Lawrence, or, as on the presentation page, Fannie M. Lawrence, was born about 1840, the daughter of Allen G. Lawrence and Martha (Peters) Lawrence.  Allen G. Lawrence died in July 1860, during the time frame of this album.

I found a listing of interments in the Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery at York, South Carolina, that shows a Mary Frances Lawrence born 1829 and died 1855.  This, however, doesn't match the York District, South Carolina, Census records of 1850 and 1860, which give her birth year as about 1838 and 1842 respectively, and have her still very much alive in August 1860.  Perhaps the file has transcription errors.

1878-1900 Autograph Album of Mary Frances Warner, before and after Marriage to Solomon Erb

1878-1900 autograph album that belonged to Mary Frances Warner, "Frankie", before and after her marriage to Solomon Erb.

This Aldine album, which measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4", was printed by L. A. Lyman in 1878.  It contains several pages with pre-printed designs and the sentiments of nearly thirty of Frankie's friends and relatives, including three of her children.

Mary Frances Warner, "Frankie", was born in 1860, the daughter of P. Reuben Warner and Mary A. (Van Noven) Warner.  Some records show Mary Frances' father as Parliament Reuben Warner.  About 1879 Frankie married Solomon Erb, son of William Lewis Erb and Lydia (Bauman) Erb of Bloomingdale, Ontario.

Read about Solomon's Lancaster, Pennsylvania Mennonite ancestor Abraham Erb and other family members, who formed the German Company and purchased 60,000 acres in 1803 in what would become known as Waterloo County, Ontario.

As mentioned above, three of Frankie's daughters inscribed pages in her album.  They were:

The page below was inscribed on August 4, 1879 by someone whose name I can't decipher.  I'm assuming the inscriber was male from the use of "Votre Ami".  If the name jumps out at you, please leave a comment.  One researcher noted that the name appears to have been written in German script as Karl E. Stevens.  If so, he may have been the Charles E. Stevens, who inscribed another page, in similar handwriting, with his wife; Mrs. Middaugh; and M. F. Warner, who I believe was the album owner Mary Frances Warner, inscribed before her marriage to Solomon Erb.

1878-1880s album of Edward Haas of the Buffalo, New York, area.  Edward wrote his name on the reverse of the first end paper.

The album measures approximately 4-1/4" by 3" and contains the sentiments of 14 of Edward's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

The first inscription was made by Martin Sattler in German, inscribed at Buffalo, New York, on July 24, 1878.

Two of the inscribers indicated they were Edward's sisters.   Minnie inscribed her page in January 1880.  Maria inscribed a page on July 24, 1878.

From brief online research, I found at least two young men named Edward Haas at Buffalo, New York, in that time frame, one born in New York and one in Germany.

Among the siblings of Edward J. Haas, born in New York in 1868, were Marie and Wilhelmina, perhaps inscribers Maria and "Minnie".  Their parents were David and Maria Barbara Haas.

Edward J. Haas married Rose Margaret Pond in 1893 and had several children with her, but it appears that most of them died young.  Edward himself died relatively young, in 1912, and is buried in the Saint John Cemetery at Cheektowaga, New York.

Hopefully a reader will weigh in with more information.

Small autograph album with inscriptions mostly from Sinking Spring, Ohio.  One page was inscribed by Mary Easton to "Gordie".  Gordie might have been Gordon or George or Georgianna.

The album has soft covers and measures approximately 5" by 2-3/4".  It contains the sentiments of 21 or 22 of Gordie's friends, at least one of whom, and possibly two, inscribed two pages.

1880s/1890s Autograph Album Journal of, Presumably, Anna Gerould of East Smithfield, Pennsylvania - Many Clippings & Mementos

Large autograph album that may have belonged to an Anna Gerould, presumably the Anna Gerould of Smithfield, Pennsylvania.  Anna used the album more as a journal for to copy spiritual and literary passages and as a place to tuck away newspaper clippings and mementos, though there are a few inscriptions from other people.

Some of the clippings concern Minnesota, Dakota Territory, Indian Territory, Montana and Washington state, many of them about Western railways.  Whether Anna traveled to these places or kept track of relatives or friends who did, I don't know.

The surname Gerould is written on the inside front cover, and the few inscriptions were made to Miss Anna, one to Anna "Gerald".

Anna's Find-a-Grave memorial notes that she was born October 15, 1851, the daughter of Lewis Bird Gerould and his first wife Marion E. (Wright) Gerould.  It appears that Anna never married; she died July 24, 1918 and is buried with family in the Union Cemetery at East Smithfield, Pennsylvania.

The album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 7".  Inscriptions:

Weightman wrote this or was the author of the passage copied.  In no other instance, though, did Anna give the author's address in addition to the name, so I believe L. S. Weightman actually did the inscription and signed it.

E. at the Congregational church at East Smithfield, Pennsylvania.  The memorial committee included Mary Peck and Lulu E. Phelps.  Mame died November November 14, 1891 and is buried in the Union Cemetery at East Smithfield, Pennsylvania, with other relatives, including her parents and her half-sister Anna.
• A lengthy newspaper article in the St. Paul and Minneapolis Pioneer Times entitled "Excursionists in Montana", concerning the trek of the Villard party from Livingston to Helena.  The "Villard party" presumably refers to Henry Villard, a president of the Northern Pacific Railway in the late 19th century.
• Three clippings about Tacoma, Washington Territory - two are identical
• Clipping about the Northern Pacific Railway: mentions the steamship Katie Hallett, named for the daughter of Col. A. L. Hallett, Superintendent of Construction; Captain Pease and the Steamer Henry Villard at Pend D'Oreille Lake; Capt. Stump who took a steamer over the falls at The Dalles; hopes to have the Katie Hallett operating all the way to Flathead Lake; speculation as whether the $750,000 to construct the 30 miles of rail between Tacoma and Seattle will pay off in the long run
• Clipping about the inspection of the 25 miles of the Oregon and California Railroad by Ex-Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood of Iowa and Secretary of the Interior under Garfield's   administration.  Kirkwood and his wife were registered at Blackwell's.   
• Clipping with church news of Missouri towns Clark's Creek and Golden City.  The Clark's Creek item was submitted by J. W. Wilkinson, County Evangelist for Wright County.  The Golden City article noted lectures by A. L. McQuary to full houses.      
• Clipping announcing the appointment of W. D. Tyler of Tacoma, Washington, as receiver of the Oregon and Washington Territory Railroad Company.   The railway, owned by Charles B. Wright, consisted of 170 miles that ran through the wheat fields of the Walla and Snake River valleys in eastern Washington and Oregon.  Interestingly, William D. Tyler once lived in Bradford County, Pennsylvania; perhaps he is the reason for the clippings about railroads.

1879-1880s Autograph Album of Nettie, Presumably of Warren, Massachusetts; and Presumably a Student at Northfield School for Girls

1879-1880s autograph album that belonged to a Nettie, presumably from Warren, Massachusetts, and presumably at one time a student at the Northfield School for Girls at Northfield, Massachusetts, which is still in operation today as Northfield Mount Hermon

The gem-size photograph that appears on the inside front cover may have depicted Nettie herself.

The first inscription in the album was made by Ella J. Fletcher at West Brookfield, Massachusetts, on December 25, 1879.  Perhaps the album was a Christmas present from Ella to Nettie.

The album measures approximately 8" by 5" and contains the sentiments of over 70 of Nettie's friends and schoolmates at Warren, Massachusetts, and at the Northfield school.  Two of the students were from China.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Several people affixed gem sized photographs to their pages, such as Marcia M. Laflin of Warren, Massachusetts, who inscribed her page on December 25, 1879, the day that Nettie apparently received the album.

Additionally, Nettie added an occasional note about the inscriber's death.  In one case, she pasted a newspaper clipping announcing the August 14, 1882 death of inscriber Stephen Rowan of Kensington, London, England, who had come to the United States to seek his fortune and inscribed a page on July 17, 1881.

I found several Netties from the Warren, Massachusetts, area, but the one who seemed to fit best with the birth dates of several other students, was Nettie Eliza Brooks.  This Nettie was born October 3, 1863 at Warren, Massachusetts, the daughter of William Brooks and Mary E. (Taintor) Brooks.

Hopefully a reader will have more information on Nettie Eliza Brooks or will have an alternate theory as to Nettie's identity.  Additionally, if you have information to share on any of the people listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Several people inscribed pages in England, including at Southport and Manchester in Lancashire and and Shipley in Yorkshire.  Presumably Nettie visited there about 1883.

The pages inscribed by the Chinese students, who called themselves Chin Young Lee of Kuong Tung, China, and Chin Kue, native of Sing Ning District, Juong Tung Province, China, who inscribed his page at Mount Hermon School in 1888.

I could use help with this page inscribed in French on October 21, 1880, either by someone from a French-speaking country or by a student in French class.

Stephen Rowan, formerly clerk at the Conn. River Lumber Co., died Monday night at Worthington, of pneumonia.  He had been suffering from phthisis some months and left his position two months ago, going to the mountain, where he hoped to gain sufficient strength to enable him to reach Minnesota in September.  He caught a severe cold the Friday preceding his death and pneumonia ensued.  He was buried at Northampton, Wednesday, Rev. W. E. Knox officiating.  He was English by birth, and leaves two brothers in this section to mourn his loss.  He was of an amiable disposition and made many friends here, and his death at the early age of twenty-three is much to be regretted.
