1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Odietta M. Rich of West Bath, Maine

1870s/1880s autograph album of Odietta M. Rich, "Odie", of West Bath, Maine.

The album is approximately 8" x 5" and contains the sentiments of over seventy of Odie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Odietta M. Rich was born about March 1863 at, I believe, West Bath, Maine, the daughter of Henry Raymond Rich and Ann Eliza (Mitchell) Rich.  They each signed pages in Odie's album; her mother signed two pages, including this one that ran over onto the reverse.

Later on in the album, Odie's parents signed facing pages; her brother Harry J. Rich, who was born about November 1871, signed his name in a childlike script on his mother's page.

Odie had an older sister, Anna Augusta Rich, who had married George Harrison Butler by the time she signed a page in Odie's album.

Several other people named Rich and Mitchell, including some who gave their relationship to Odie, signed pages in her album, as the list below shows.

I don't believe that Odie ever married.  She lived at Phippsburg for a time and then, at least in 1920, lived with her brother Harry and their widowed mother at West Bath, on the dairy farm.  The three of them were still in West Bath at the time of the 1930 Census.  By 1940, Ann Eliza (Mitchell) Rich had died, but Odie and Harry were still living in West Bath, on the Berry Mill Rd.

I found a newspaper record of the probating of Odie's father Henry Raymond Rich.

The digitized book "A Look into West Bath's Past", by William C. Purington, published in  includes this recollection of Odie's mother, Ann Eliza (Mitchell) Rich.  Sadly, the page containing the rest of her recollection is not shown.

Another reference to Ann Eliza (Mitchell) Rich is contained in the August 12, 1925 edition of the Lewiston Daily Sun, under the headline "Descendant John and Priscilla Alden is 91".  Scroll down the second column from the left to see the article.

The last signer in the album, Lena Rich, who signed on March 23, 1878, included the initials B.H.S.  I'm not sure whether the initials referred to Brunswick High School or Bath High School, and if Odie happened to have attended B.H.S. in the same class as Lena or at least the same school.

Harry J. Rich died in 1961, but I haven't yet found a death date for Odietta.

If you have corrections to the information above, or additional information to share on Odietta M. Rich and her family, or any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Alphabetical list of the signers: [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • Mrs. C. H. Mitchell of North Scarborough, Maine [she wrote Scarboro], signed on October 1, 1884
  • Hattie S. Mitchell of West Bath, Maine, signed a page on July 13, 1884.  She called herself Odie's cousin;  perhaps same Hattie S. Mitchell who signed a page in 1878
  • A. A. Mitchell, signed at West Bath, Maine, in 1884.  Not sure of first initials.  Odie's maternal grandmother was Abigail Alden (Clifford) Mitchell, but I didn't find a namesake daughter for her, and I didn't find a brother of Odie's mother married to an A. A.
  • Lucretia A. Mitchell of West Bath, Maine, signed on 8 February 1880
  • Jennie Mitchell of West Bath, Maine, signed on February 8, 1880

1902 Photograph, Possibly Graduation Photograph, of Jack F. Beck, by Bushnell studio of California and Portland, Oregon

1902 photograph, possibly a graduation photograph, of a young man, taken by one of the Bushnell studios at San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, or Sacramento, California, or Portland, Oregon.

The young man identified himself on the reverse as Jack F. Beck.  The photograph was intended to be given to Leonora Badley.  "To Leonora Badley, with best wishes.  Most sincerely yours, Jack F. Beck, April 25, 1902."

The photograph itself is about 8" x 5"; with the mat, it's about 10-3/4" x 8-1/4".

If a graduation photograph, Jack looks old enough to have been about to be a college graduate at the time the photograph was taken.  If so, he could have been from anywhere, even outside the United States.

As yet I haven't identified a Jack F. Beck that seems to fit the bill, and I haven't found anything on a Leonora Badley.  I did find Leonora Badderley in fact and fiction.

If you recognize Jack F. Beck by name and/or face, or Leonora Badley, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Photograph of George Abeel in Carriage Driven by Black Bird and Topsy, Possibly George Abeel of New York City

Wonderful old photograph of an elderly man in a carriage with two fine looking horses in the harness.

The driver and horses are identified on the reverse as George Abeel, Black Bird and Topsy and contains this text: "My Grandpa Exercising."

I found online references for a George Abeel who was a member of the Suburban Riding and Driving Club at the Inwood section of northern Manhattan.  He was born 16 October 1839 at 90 Prince Street, New York City, the son of John Howard Abeel and Catherine Emeline (Strobel) Abeel.

He entered the family iron and hardware mercantile business and eventually becames its head.  In 1861, he married Julia E. Guenther, daughter of Rev. Francis Guenther.  They had three sons, George, Francis and Henry.

The book The Abeel and Allied Families, published in 1899 contains a head study of a younger George Abeel who bears a resemblance to the man in the photograph above.  If this is the George Abeel in the carriage, the photograph was probably taken between 1910 and 27 February 1918, when George died.

If you have corrections to the information above, or if you feel that the man in the carriage is a different George Abeel, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1816 Massachusetts Militia Order to Richard Neal of Eliot, Maine; James Goodwin's Command

[Note: Be sure to read the comments section where a reader has provided crucial information.]

Small Massachusetts Militia document, a bit larger than 6-1/2" x 3", dated 26 April 1816, informing Richard Neal of Eliot, Maine, that he must appear at the house of Commanding Officer James Goodwin on Tuesday, 7 May 1816, and be armed and equipped for military duty.

Someone, presumably Richard, wrote a note to his mother on the reverse, advising that his health was not very good at present.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

It's possible that this Richard Neal was the Richard Neal born in Kittery,  Maine, on 4 April 1790, son of John and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Neal of Eliot, Maine.  Richard died at Eliot, Maine, on 6 May 1857.

According to an online genealogy of the Goodwin family, on Richard married Elizabeth Goodwin, "Betsey", who was born 11 April 1788 at Kittery, Maine, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Hobbs) Goodwin.  They married 21 March 1819, according to an entry in the book Old Kittery and Her Families by Everett Schermerhorn Stackpole, published in 1903.

Tragically, again referring to the Goodwin genealogy, this Richard Neal, who was farming at the Neal Garrison on Goodwin Road in Eliot, killed his wife Betsey in a "fit of mental derangement" on 4 October 1825.

Read an account of the murder in the book America Bewitched: the Story of Witchcraft After Salem, written by Owen Davies, and published in 2013 by Oxford University Press.

By the time of the murder, the couple had three children, the youngest not even a year old:

  • Elizabeth S. Neal, born 14 February 1820; died 6 April 1901, unmarried
  • John Neal, born 6 August 1821; married Elizabeth Raitt
  • Daniel Neal, born October 1822; died April 1852, unmarried
  • Sarah Neal, born 11 November 1824; died 26 February 1908, unmarried.
Is it any wonder that three of the four children never married?  As to what happened to Richard after the murder of his wife, I don't know, except that he lived on until 1857.

If you have corrections to the information above, or if you feel that the Richard Neal in the military document is not the Richard Neal who married Betsey Goodwin, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1897 Teacher's Notebook of Flora Hanscom at a School in Machiasport, Maine

"Sky Rocket" notebook that belonged to teacher Flora Hanscom at a school at Machiasport, Maine, and started on April 26, 1897.

Flora was from East Machias, Maine, but my research shows that most of the students lived at Machiasport.  Though the towns abut, it's possible that Flora boarded with a Machiasport family.

The notebook is approximately 8-1/4" x 6-3/4" and contains nearly 100 pages, though some are unmarked.  Two pages were removed before the notebook came into my possession.  A scrap of paper with musical notation is tucked inside.

Some of the writing spreads over two facing pages.

The pages contain students' names, lesson plans, deportment marks, a list of visitors and several pages of weather for September through November 1897.

If you'd like to see images of all of the pages, click here.

An alphabetical list of the students and visitors appears at the end of this post.

Below are images of pages with names of students and, on one page, visitors to the school.

Below are four pages with weather observations from September through November 1897.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections requested!]

Flora L. Hanscom (1869-1936) was born 27 March 1869 at East Machias, Maine, the daughter of Simon Otis Hanscom and Julia Raymond (White) Hanscom, who were born at Machias, Maine, and East Machias, Maine, respectively.

On 3 August 1898, at East Machias, Maine, not long after this notebook was used, Flora married Austin H. Pettigrew (1865-1936), son of Obed and Margaret (Ingalls) Pettigrew.  Austin was born in February 1865 at Machiasport, Maine.

Flora and Austin were at Revere, Massachusetts, at the time the 1900 Census was enumerated.  At that time their daughter Margaret Louise Pettigrew was an infant; Austin was working as a traveling salesman.

By 1910, the family was back in East Machias, now with two children, son Raymond Otis Pettigrew having been born in Rhode Island about 1902.  Austin was working as the manager of a tea company.

The 1920 Census found the family of four at Collingswood, New Jersey, where Austin was working as the manager of a tea company.  In the 1930 Census, Flora and Austin were enumerated at East Machias, Maine, where they were living with their adopted son James, who was born in New Jersey about 1923.  Austin was still working in the tea industry.

Both Flora and Austin died in 1936.

If you have corrections and/or information to share on any of the people mentioned here, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Autograph Album given in 1893 to Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth of Franklin, Maine, by her grandson George Eben Hill

Autograph album presented by George Eben Hill at Christmas in  1893 to his grandmother, Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth, at Franklin, Maine.

Hannah's name wasn't spelled out, but two people in the album called her grandmother; Hannah was their common denominator.

George Eben Hill was the son of Ebenezer Hill and Phoebe Nickerson (Wentworth) Hill, Hannah's daughter from her second marriage, to Joseph Card Wentworth.  George signed another page on 6 April 1895, although his handwriting looks a tad different.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of about 20 of Hannah's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Tucked inside the album is the calling card of Herbert Cleveland Smith.

The album covers are faded velvet with a floral design; attached to the front cover is the word "Autographs" in metal.

Another of Hannah's grandchildren signed several pages in her album; thankfully she called herself a granddaughter on one of them.  Ina Phoebe Smith was the daughter of Nancy C. (Foster) Smith and Charles Joseph Smith, Hannah's son from her first marriage to Captain Joseph Smith.

Ina's mother, Nancy C. (Foster) Smith, presumably, was the N. C. Smith who signed a page in the album, also on 2 April 1897.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth was born 11 August 1821 at Trenton, Maine, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Winchester) Thurber, who were born in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, respectively.

I found a marriage intention record between Joseph Smith of Ellsworth and Hannah W. Thurber, then residing at Walpole, at Walpole, Massachusetts, on 23 May 1846.  According to a Massachusetts marriage record, they were married 7 October 1846, at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Before Joseph died in 1850, he and Hannah had two children:

  • Charles Joseph Smith, born about April 1846, give or take a year, in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  If he is the Charles J. Smith in a certain Civil War record, he may have been born before Joseph and Hannah's marriage; perhaps, even, his father was someone else.  His daughter Grace Evalaide (Smith) Savage ordered a Military Headstone, a record that showed Charles' dates of service as 19 September 1861 to 31 July 1865.  His age of enlistment on the Soldier Record and Profile showed his age as 18, but he may have added a year or several to his age, which was not uncommon.
  • Alphonzo W. Smith, born about 1848.

Son Charles Joseph Smith married Nancy C. Foster on 25 September 1869 at Ellsworth, Maine; both were then residents of Franklin, Maine.  Nancy was born at Trescott, Maine on 8 July 1852, according to her death record.  She was the daughter of Richard and Nancy (Agett ?) Foster, who were natives of Saint John, New Brunswick, according to her death record.

Charles and Nancy's daughter, the above mentioned Ina Phoebe Smith, was born 22 August 1886 at Franklin, Maine.  Ina married George A. Linscott in 1903.  George was born at Hancock, Maine, on 21 October 1881, son of Lorenzo M. and Harriet (Lord) Linscott.

After the death of Captain Joseph Smith in 1850, Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith married Joseph Card Wentworth, son of Moses and Sarah (Hooper) Wentworth.  Joseph was born 9 August 1823 at Franklin, Maine.

Hannah and Joseph Card Wentworth had three children,:

  • William Livingston Wentworth, born 30 June 1852 at Franklin, Maine
  • Phoebe Nickerson Wentworth, born 23 March 1854 at Franklin, Maine
  • Moses Putnam Wentworth, born 18 May 1856 at Franklin, Maine
George Eben Hill, who presented the album to Hannah at Christmas 1893, was the son of Phoebe Nickerson Wentworth and her husband Ebenezer Hill.  According to his World War I draft registration card, George was born 29 December 1875; his marriage record gave his birthplace as Wells Beach, Maine.

George married Minnie Sadie Wells, daughter of Nahum and Olive (Manuel) Wells.  Minnie was born 21 February 1876 at Kennebunk, Maine, according to her birth and marriage records.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Alphabetical list of the signers:

  • Unsigned page, but could be the writing of signer Edith Merrill West or another of the West girls, whose handwriting appears very similar
  • George W. Avery, signed at Franklin, Maine, on 30 March 1894
  • May E. Avery of Franklin, Maine, signed on 30 March, 1894
  • Victoria A. Burnham, signed at Egypt, Maine, on 27 April 1895

  • Doris Grindle of Box 214, Ellsworth, Maine
  • Georgie E. Hill of Franklin, Maine; presented the album to his grandmother Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth on 25 December 1893.  George Eben Hill's mother, Phoebe Nickerson Wentworth, was Hannah's daughter from her second marriage, to Joseph Card Wentworth.  George's father was Ebenezer Hill.  I believe it was George who signed another page in 1895, though his handwriting is a bit different.
  • George E. Hill, signed on 6 April 1895.  He may be the Georgie E. Smith who signed the presentation page, though the handwriting is a bit different.
  • Neva F. Linscott of Egypt, Maine, signed on 27 July 1919
  • Gertrude Moore, or Moors, of Egypt, Maine, signed in 1897.
  • T. E. Sargent of Ellsworth, Maine, signed on 16 October 1898; Hannah's niece.  Could possibly be J. E. Sargent

  • Miss Ruth Savage
  • Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth of Franklin, Maine; album received from her grandson George Eben Hill
  • Herbert Cleveland Smith - his calling card is tucked in the album.
  • Ina P. Smith, signed on 2 April 1897; Hannah's granddaughter, Ina Phoebe Smith.  Ina's father, Charles Joseph Smith, was Hannah's son from her  first marriage, to Captain Joseph Smith.  Ina's mother was Nancy C. (Foster) Smith.  Ina signed pages in 1902 and 1903, plus a partially erased page in 1898
  • N. C. Smith, signed on 2 April 1897.  I believe this was Nancy C. (Foster) Smith, mother of Ina P. Smith, and thus the daughter in law of album owner, Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth
  • Ina Smith, signed on 15 October 1903; presumably another page signed by Hannah's granddaughter Ina P. Smith in 1897.
  • Hannah Winslow (Thurber) Smith Wentworth of Franklin, Maine; album received from her grandson George Eben Hill
