Bible of Joseph & Susan (Curtiss) Wakelee of Huntington (Shelton), Connecticut

Bible of Joseph and Susan (Curtiss) Wakelee of Huntington, Connecticut.   Some of the death entries show the name Wakeley.  Another name variant is Wakelyn.

Huntington merged with the town of Shelton, Connecticut in 1919 and is now known as Shelton.

The Bible measures approximately 11" by nearly 8" and is 3" thick.  It was published by the American Tract Society and has a copyright dated 1861 by O. R. Kingsbury.

The Susan S. Wakelee who signed the first end paper was probably the first born child of Joseph and Susan (Curtiss) Wakelee, rather than Susan (Curtiss) Wakelee herself.  The handmade bookmark with the initials S.W. might have been crafted by or for Susan (Curtis) Wakelee or her daughter Susan S. Wakelee.

There are four family record pages, of which three have entries.

Family Bible of Thomas U. Gage and wife Dolly (French) Gage of Nashua, New Hampshire, + clippings

Family Bible of Thomas U. Gage and wife Dolly A. (French) Gage of New Hampshire.

Text on the first end paper: Mrs. T. U. Gage, Nashua, 1856

There's another end paper with the text: This is our old family Bible my Mother & Father, Edw. A. G.

The Bible is leatherbound and approximately 7-1/2" x 5" and 2-1/4" thick.

It doesn't have Family Record pages but someone has pasted in a page with information about Thomas, Dolly and their children.

Births
Thomas U. Page, 30 September 1819
Dolly A. French, 26 January 1826 [though the last digit is overstruck so I can't be positive]
Married 12 June, 1845

Children Born
Eugene F., 15 December 1850
Edward A., 2 January 1854
Clara Etta, 8 February 1860

Eugene F., 20 March 1885 [possibly 26 March 1885]
Dolly A. Gage, wife of Thomas, 8 February 1896

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Thomas Underwood Gage was born 30 September 1819 at Bedford, Massachusetts, son of Isaac and Sally (Underwood) Gage.  Dolly Adaline French was born 26 January 1826 at Rochester, New Hampshire, daughter of Ebenezer and Rhoda (Coburn) French.

Eugene's full name was Eugene French Gage.  He married Ada Walker.  He died on 20 March 1885 at Nashua, New Hampshire.  According to his obituary below, he and Ada had no children.

Edward's full name was Edward Augustus Gage.  He married Addie Laura Webster, had three children with her, and died 9 March 1939 at Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Clara Etta Gage married Fred S. Neff on 29 October 1884 at Nashua, New Hampshire.  They had at least one child, a daughter Dolly, born in New Hampshire about 1887.  I don't have Clara's death date.  I know from Census records that the family had moved to Rhode Island at some point, but I don't know if they moved on from there or not.

The Bible contains the following clippings, which include the obituary of Dr. Eugene French Gage, as noted above; the obituary of Mrs. Sophronia Robie French, who was married to Phineas C. French, older brother of Dolly Adaline (French) Gage; and the obituary of Dolly's oldest brother Ebnenezer C. French.

1879-1880s Autograph Album "Flowers in Frolic" of Maria Anderson True of New Gloucester, Maine; Fanny Flora Bond Palmer Lithographs

[Note of June 23, 2014:  Please scroll down to the comments section for more information on Maria Anderson True, her husband Charles Alfred Day and their son Chester Morrill Day.]

1879 to 1880s autograph album of Maria Anderson True of New Gloucester, Maine.

The album, which measures approximately 7-3/4" x 6", is entitled "Flowers in Frolic" and features four hand-painted lithographs by the noted lithographer Fanny Flora Bond Palmer, who had emigrated to New York from England.  One of the lithographs originally in the album is missing: Pomegranate Foolishness.

An alphabetical list of the signers and their sentiments appears at the end of this post.

The reverse of the page signed by Maria herself has the inscription: Sophia Hamlin, Maine, 1854.  Sophia may have been the original owner of the album, but didn't use it herself to collect autographs.

From online research, I found that the album dates to the 1844-1855 era when the album's printer, John C. Riker was in business at 129 Fulton Street, New York, and Fanny Flora Bond Palmer and her husband Edmund Seymour Palmer were in business as F & S Palmer at 34 Ann Street in New York City.

The lithograph below appears to be the title page, with the text Riker, 129 Fulton St., N.Y at the bottom margin.   The illustration itself has the address 34 Ann St.  The four other lithographs, interspersed throughout the album, also show F. &  S. Palmer's Lith.

Researching online, I found a description of this very album here and here.   I bought the album for its Maine provenance but it seems it's a very valuable album on its own merits.  See the four additional lithographs at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Maria Anderson True was born and/or christened on 20 October 1870 at New Gloucester, Maine, the daughter of Jabez and Celinda H. (Waterhouse) True, who were born at New Gloucester, Maine, and Poland, Maine.

Maria's parents signed adjoining pages on Sunday, 18 April 1880.

Maria had at least three siblings, two older sisters and an older brother, who all signed pages in her album.  The page her brother Joseph signed came from a different album and was apparently inserted into this one.
  1. Edith True, born 28 December 1859.
  2. Joseph Sumner True, born 10 July 1862
  3. Clara Lovina True, born 11 April 1865

On 20 August 1900 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Maria Anderson True married Charles Alfred Day, son of John M. and Hannah (Nevens) Day.  Charles was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 8 November 1867.

Charles' parents were born at Carmel, Maine.  At some point, Hannah's family moved to the New Gloucester, Maine, area. Several people named Nevens signed pages in Maria's album, as you can see in the list below.

Maria and Charles lived at Cambridge, Massachusetts, after their marriage and had at least one child, a son Chester Morrill Day, born 12 December 1906 at Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The family later moved to Watertown, Massachusetts.  Charles was the superintendent of a cemetery.

Family Record Pages of Charles R. Lawrence and Lenora T. (Moyer) Lawrence of Nebraska

Set of two pages that appear to have been removed at some point from a Family Bible that belonged to Charles Richard Lawrence and his wife Lenora T. (Moyer) Lawrence. One of the pages seems to show the surname as Laurence.

The Marriage Certificate page, shown above, is not marked, though the marriage date is mentioned on other pages as 9 May 1889. Interestingly, the reverse of the Marriage Certificate page and its facing page contain nearly the same information.

Charles Richard Lawrence was born at Berlin, Wisconsin, on 10 September 1863 and died 24 February 1929, no place mentioned
Lenora T. Moyer was born at Shelbyville, Illinois, on 24 August 1865 and died 20 December 1959, no place mentioned.

The pages give the dates and places of birth of nine children, from 1890 to 1908:
  1. Ethel May Lawrence, born 11 February 1890 at North Platte, Nebraska; died 23 March 1966
  2. Charles Gladus Lawrence, born 4 February 1892 at Salt Lake City, Utah; died 12 April 1941
  3. Stanford Gardy Lawrence, born 20 January 1894, at St. Joseph, Missouri; died 13 July 1895
  4. Elma Fern Lawrence, born 21 May 1896 at Sutherland, Nebraska; died 6 December 1897
  5. Dewey McKinley Lawrence, born 15 June 1898 at Sutherland, Nebraska
  6. Merritt Otis Lawrence, born 24 August 1900 at Sutherland, Nebraska; buried 31 March 1956
  7. Infant son who died at birth on 27 October 1902 at Sutherland, Nebraska
  8. Merle Truman Lawrence, born 18 February 1904 at Sutherland, Nebraska
  9. Hera Janet Lawrence, born 11 December 1908 at Hershey, Nebraska

The fourth page was not filled out.
