1859-1865 Autograph Album of Jane M. Chick, "Jennie", of Frankfort, Maine

Autograph album given to Jennie M. Chick of Frankfort, Maine, by her sister Ellen Augusta (Chick) Lewis.

After Ellen's first husband, Freeman Atwood Lewis died and after she gave the album to Jennie, Ellen married Thomas Wyman Vose, who inscribed a page in the album.

There may have been a coastal trade connection to this album, as inscribers gave residences such as:
  • San Francisco, California
  • Bucksport, Maine
  • Castine, Maine
  • Orland, Maine
  • Portland, Maine
  • Winterport, Maine
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Salem, Massachusetts
  • New York City
The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 50 of Jennie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Inscriber Aaron Holbrook gave his residence as the Ship Daylight.  I wonder if this was the steamship USS Daylight, built in 1859 and later taken over by the U.S. Navy to prevent trade by the Confederacy with other nations during the Civil War?

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Jane M. Chick, "Jennie", was born February 18, 1836, the daughter of merchant Elisha Chick, Jr., and Ruth (Avery) Chick, who were born at Frankfort, Maine, and Castine, Maine, respectively.  Jennie's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick inscribed a page in the album at Frankfort, Maine, on May 24, 1864.

Other inscribers who were related to Jennie by blood or marriage - and there were likely others whose relationship I missed:
  • Harriet N. Abbott of Winterport, Maine; inscribed on May 6, 1863.  Harriet Newell (Chick) Abbott, wife of Charles D. Abbott and sister of album owner Jennie M. Chick
  • Lucy F. Avery of Castine, Maine; inscribed on June 24, 1860.  Presumably Lucy Foster Avery, daughter of Eliza (Stevens) Avery and John Atkins Avery, who was a brother to Jennie's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick.  Lucy would marry Charles Parker on March 5, 1861 at Brooksville, Maine.
  • Phebe P. Avery of Castine, Maine; inscribed on May 30, 1860.  Presumably Phebe Perkins Avery, daughter of Eliza (Stevens) Avery and John Atkins Avery, who was a brother to album owner Jennie M. Chick's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick.  Phebe married George Stevens Wilson in 1866.
  • Edwin W. Holbrook; inscribed on February 11, 1860 at Boston, Massachusetts.  Presumably the Edwin Webster Holbrook who purchased an interest in the Springvale Manufacturing Company at Springvale, Maine.  Shared the page with his wife Hannah Frances (Chick) Holbrook, "Fanny", who was a sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick.
  • Fanny C. Holbrook of Longwood, Massachusetts; inscribed on October 12, 1862.  She was Hannah Frances (Chick) Holbrook, wife of Edwin W. Holbrook, with whom she shared this page, and sister of album owner Jennie M. Chick.  They married at New York City on April 30, 1857
  • Ellen A. Lewis; inscribed on September 7, 1859.  Shared the page with S. H. Hayes of South Weymouth, Massachusetts.  Presumably Ellen Augusta (Chick) Lewis, widow of Freeman Atwood Lewis.  Ellen gave the album to her sister, Jennie M. Chick.  Ellen later married inscriber Thomas Wyman Vose.
  • A. L. Skinner of Portland, Maine.  Presumably Alfred Loring Skinner, whose wife Ruth Avery (Chick) Skinner, a sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick, also inscribed the page.
  • R. C. Skinner; inscribed at Portland, Maine, on October 3, 1860.  Presumably Ruth Avery (Chick) Skinner, sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick and wife of Alfred Loring Skinner, with whom she shared the page.
  • H. J. Skinner of Bucksport, Maine; inscribed on August 10, 1865.    Hannah Jane Skinner, sister of Annie Maria Skinner, with whom she shared the page.  Daughters of Alfred Loring Skinner and Ruth Avery (Chick) Skinner, who was a sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick.
  • Annie M. Skinner of Bucksport, Maine; inscribed on August 10, 1865.  Anna Maria Skinner, sister of inscriber Hannah Jane Skinner, with whom she shared the page.  Daughters of Alfred Loring Skinner and Ruth Avery (Chick) Skinner, who was a sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick.
  • Thomas W. Vose; inscribed on November 29, 1859.  Thomas Wyman Vose, who became the second husband of Ellen Augusta (Chick) Lewis Vose, who gifted the album to her sister Jennie M. Chick.
It appears that Jennie never married.  She died February 12, 1917 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Winterport, Maine, with her parents and other relatives.
