1883-1886 Autograph Album from Wilton, Maine, area; Presumably Owned by Minnie Augusta Marble

1883-1886 autograph album of signers from the Wilton, Maine, and Norridgewock, Maine, area.  I believe it belonged to Minerva Augusta Marble, "Minnie", of Wilton, Maine.  Many of the signers were students at W. A., presumably Wilton Academy, N.H.S., presumably Norridgewock High School, and the Eaton School at Norridgewock, Maine.  Norridgewock High School and the Eaton School may have been the same institution.

At first, because of this scrap and name on the inside front cover, I thought the album belonged to a young woman named Corinne Woodman but couldn't find anyone of that name.  However, I did find a Cony Warren Woodman who was a brother to signer Oliver Otis Woodman, who called himself the album owner's cousin.  They were the sons of Col. Ephraim Warren Woodman, who was an older half brother to Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble, mother of Minnie.  So it's possible that Cony affixed the scrap to the inside front cover in honor of Minnie.

The first page after the title page was signed by Minnie A. Marble on January 5, 1884, or was perhaps drawn for her by someone else.  Whoever did it, spent some quality time on it.  A few people inscribed pages in the waning days of December 1883, so I'm guessing that this album was a Christmas gift.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 120 people, a few of whom also signed group pages of students.  Many people signed two or three to a page, but in most cases I don't think there was a relationship between the page sharers but rather a need to find a spot to fit in the autographs.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Minnie Augusta Marble was born about June 1870 or 1871, the daughter of Horace Delande Marble and Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble.  Roxanna, as noted above, was the younger half-sister of Col. Ephraim Warren Woodman, father of Cony Warren Woodman and Oliver Otis Woodman, who inscribed the page below.  The boys' parents, Col. Woodman and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (Hiscock) Woodman, also a Wilton, Maine, native, had moved their family to Vernon, Mississippi.  Both parents had died by the time of this album, and the boys spent time afterward with relatives at Wilton.

Another cousin, Otto Clifford Seales, inscribed a page at Wilton, Maine, in 1885.  He was the son of Enoch Seales and Octavia S. (Woodman) Seales, who was another sister of Minnie's mother Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble.

On 17 May 1889 at Farmington, Maine, Minnie married Ernest H. Young, son of Jotham D. B. Young and wife Lucy Maria (Witham) Young, who were presumably the J. B. D. Young and wife who attended a Lynn Prayer Band meeting at Farmington, Maine, in about 1876 - see another post.

Daughter Hazel Marble Young was born about July 1890.  It appears that Ernest died or left the marriage not long after Hazel's birth because on February 27, 1892 at Auburn, Maine, Minnie married George W. Goldsmith.  I'm not sure what became of that marriage, but Minnie married English immigrant George Brown on December 27, 1897 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Minnie's daughter Hazel Marble Young married Earl Everett Robbins at Wilton, Maine, in 1916.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, a different theory as to the autograph album's owner, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Minnie herself wrote her name on two group pages of students.  Minnie was one of the signers on each.

Two teachers signed pages in the album.  One of them was George Currier of Wilton, Maine.

The other was Lizzie M. Dixon of East Jay, Maine, who signed her page on September 9, 1884.

  1. Hattie Billington was 3rd cousin to my great grandfather William Merritt Randall. Hattie's grandmother Dorcas and William's grandmother Lucy were sisters. Hattie lived near Addie M. Young according to the 1880 census. Hattie was 2 years older than Addie. I wonder if Addie was related to the Young's mentioned here. Do you have more information about Hattie? Thanks! 1. Sorry, I don't have more information on Hattie, though I appreciate your adding information on her. I don't have much time to research each individual heirloom. As for Addie M. Young, I don't have information on her either, but have to say that I was surprised to find that my own Young ancestor was actually a Jung, who came from near Strasbourg, France (then Germany) to BroadBay Settlement in the mid 18th century.
