1903-1909 Autograph Album of Clarence Frank Bridge of Nelson, New Hampshire

1903-1909 autograph album of Clarence Frank Bridge of Nelson, New Hampshire.  Because he was a child during this time frame, it's likely that his mother collected most of the sentiments for him.

The album is approximately 5-3/4" x 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 18 of Clarence's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teacher.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  There are several illustrations scattered throughout, of a feminine vein, which seems odd for an autograph album for a boy.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Clarence Frank Bridge was born 5 February 1897 at Sullivan, New Hampshire, the son of Frank Wilbur Bridge and Hattie Anna (Dunn) Bridge, who were born at Roxbury, New Hampshire, and Sullivan, New Hampshire, respectively.

Hattie Anna (Dunn) Bridge signed a page in Clarence's album at Nelson, New Hampshire, on October 10, 1903.

Clarence's sister Alice Dora Bridge of East Sullivan, New Hampshire, signed a page on September 20, 1902.  Interestingly, Alice's future husband apparently sought out her page on their wedding day, January 2, 1909, and signed the right facing page.

Several of Clarence's relatives on his mother's side signed pages in his album, including her brother Reuben Austin Dunn and his wife Amanda Elizabeth Dunn and their children, Arthur Garfield Dunn, Mary Ada Dunn, "Mae", and Bessie Ella Dunn.

Another of Clarence's cousins who signed a page in his album was Hattie Cornelia Currier, daughter of John Sumner Currier and Hannah Cornelia (Dunn) Currier, who was a sister to Clarence's mother Hattie Anna (Dunn) Bridge.

The teacher who signed a page in the album was Maude A. Styles of Peterborough, New Hampshire, who signed her page at Munsonville, New Hampshire, on May 20, 1904.  She was the daughter of John E. and Amelia Delora (Stone) Styles.  She would marry Swedish immigrant Emil Erickson in 1920.

On November 24, 1921 at Keene, New Hampshire, Clarence Frank Bridge married Dorris Lula Hill, daughter of Daniel L. and Lula G. (Hodgman) Hill.  They would have three children before Clarence's untimely death from pneumonia at Keene, New Hampshire, in 1926.  Dorris later married Neil Vernon Metcalf and had at least one more child.

1880s Autograph Album of Ida A. (Myers) Bonney of New London, Ohio

From clues inside, I found that this keepsake belonged to Ida A. (Myers) Bonney of New London, Ohio.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of five of Ida's relatives and in-laws.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they may have offered, appear at the end of this post.

Cousin Fan signed a page in Ida's album on July 31, 1882.  I haven't found her identity.

Myra signed a page on August 28, 1889 and called herself Ida's sister-in-law, one of the clues to Ida's identity.

The other clues were the pages signed by S. Bonney and Lafayette Bonney.  Lafayette Bonney was married to Sarah (Stevens) Bonney; two of their children were Myra Bonney and Elvin Leon Bonney, who just happened to have married an Ida A. Myers.

Sarah (Stevens) Bonney signed a page at New London, Ohio, on August 28, 1889.  Lafayette of New London, Ohio, didn't date his page.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ida A. Myers was born about December 1859, the daughter of Emmanuel C. and Mary E. (Lamb) Myers, who were born in Pennsylvania and Michigan, respectively.   On 20 September 1881 in Huron County, Ohio, Ida married Elvin Leon Bonney, son of Lafayette and Sarah (Stevens) Bonney.  Elvin was born 9 November 1854.

He and Ida moved to Ramsey, Illinois, where Elvin worked as a druggist; they had at least two children.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or believe that Ida was a different person, please leave a comment.  Likewise, please leave a comment if you have information on any of the signers listed below.

1890-1907 Autograph Album of Addie May Peaslee of Jefferson, Maine

Autograph album that was presented to Addie May Peaslee by her teacher Roswell G. Hilton at South Jefferson, Maine, on January 18, 1890.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 40 of Addie's relatives and friends, as well as several interspersed pages of crazy quilt design like the one that appears on the cover at top.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Addie May Peaslee was born 2 December 1876 at South Jefferson, Maine, the daughter of Edwin W. Peaslee and Nancy A. (Tibbetts) Peaslee.   Edwin A. Peaslee signed a page in the album at Jefferson, Maine, on February 20, 1890.

Several members of the Tibbetts family signed pages in the album, including Addie's maternal great uncle, Lewis Tibbetts of Augusta, Maine, who signed a page at Jefferson, Maine, on July 10, 1890, and indicated that he was "71 years old the 20th of April Last".

During the period in which Addie collected sentiments for her album, she married to Everett David Jackson on June 17, 1893.  Everett was born at Nobleboro, Maine, on May 25, 1870, son of Eugene R. and Laura Jane (Eugley) Jackson.  Some of Everett's relatives, including his paternal grandmother Rosilla (Kennedy) Jackson, after whom he named one of his daughters, signed pages in the album.  Rosilla's page:

Addie and Everett lived at Jefferson, Maine, and had, I believe, ten children.  After Addie's death in 1928, Everett and two of his sons moved to the home of daughter Bertha E. (Jackson) Lincoln at Flagstaff Plantation, Maine, where they were enumerated in the 1930 Census.  Everett died that fall.

1830s Autograph Album of Betsey Beardsley of Scipio, New York

1830s autograph album of Betsey Beardsley of Scipio, New York.  The album was presented to Betsy by A. Tupper, as shown on a blue scrap of paper pasted on the first end paper.

The first two inscribed pages, facing pages, in the album were signed by Asa Tupper and the third by A. Tupper, presumably the same person as above.  I believe he was Dr. Asa Wilbur Tupper (1816-1895), son of Josiah and Mercy Mary (Wilbur) Tupper.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 6" and contains the sentiments of 39 of Betsey's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they might have offered, appear at the end of this post.

The Young Lady's Remembrancer was published in New York by J. C. Riker in 1833 and includes several engravings interspersed throughout.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Elizabeth Beardsley, "Betsey", was born 17 June 1820 in New York, I think at Scipio, the daughter of Jared and Betsey (Bennett) Beardsley, both Connecticut natives.

The J. Beardsley, Jr., who signed a page, may have been Betsey's brother Jared Beardsley, Jr., who was born May 30, 1816 at Scipio, New York.  He married Mary Jane Gray in 1838 and moved to Michigan, where he died at Bay City in 1887.

Two people mentioned that they were Betsey's cousin.  One was A. B. of Naples, presumably in New York, who signed a two-page sentiment.

The other was cousin Fayette, who signed on the inside back cover of the album.

The person from whom I bought the album felt that the it had belonged to the Betsey Beardsley of Clinton, New York, who married Hiram Lamson, but what convinced me it was the Betsey born in 1820, as noted above, was the fact that it contained a page signed by J. G. Sheffield.  The Betsey born in 1820 married John G. Sheffield at Scipio, New York, on June 13, 1847.

Betsey and John lived at Auburn, New York, at least until the time of the 1860 Census.  Betsey died in 1862, according to the book "William Beardsley of Stratford, Connecticut & His Descendants", though I haven't substantiated that.  After that, it appears that John headed to Michigan and married again.  He died in 1892 and is buried at Battle Creek, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1862-1864 Autograph Album of Caroline Avery Johnson of Greenland, New Hampshire; married Morris Jenness Lamprey

1862-1864 autograph album of Caroline Avery Johnson, "Carrie", from before and after her marriage to Morris Jenness Lamprey.

The "Sunbeam Album" was printed in New York by Leavitt & Allen and contains several engravings throughout, as well as an image of a flower that appears to have components that were pasted on the page, either by the printer or perhaps later by Carrie.  Carrie also pasted flowers and what appear to be herbs or seaweed in the album.

The album measures approximately 7" x 5-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 13 of Carrie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and alphabetical list of signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Caroline Avery Johnson, "Carrie", was born about May 1838 at Greenland, New Hampshire, the daughter of Charles B. Johnson and Martha Jane (Avery) Johnson.  On June 1, 1863 at Greenland, New Hampshire, Carrie married Morris Jenness Lamprey, son of Hezekiel Buzzell Lamprey and Mary Ann Elizabeth (Jenness) Lamprey.  Morris signed a page in Carrie's album on June 20, 1864.

By the time of enumeration of the 1900 Census, Carrie, Morris and their daughter C. Belle Lamprey, perhaps Carrie Belle Lamprey, born about 1867 in New Hampshire, were living at Melrose, Massachusetts.  Morris worked as a machinist.

There's a scrap of paper in the album with a drawing by Dr. George Gray of a woman and child, labeled as "Mrs. Lamprey".  Could this be a drawing of Carrie Avery (Johnson) Avery and baby Carrie Belle Lamprey, perhaps while they were living or visiting at Nashua, New Hampshire?  There was a Dr. George Gray at Nashua, born April 29, 1829, son of John and Hersina (Knight) Gray.  Read more about him and see an image of him here.

Morris Jenness Lamprey died at Melrose, Massachusetts, on January 21, 1917.  Carrie died there the following year.

Melrose directories have listings, under the heading "Illustrator", for C. Belle Lamprey and Belle Lamprey.  Presumably she is the artist whose painting appears in this brochure from the "Melrose Mirror".  See another Belle Lamprey painting here.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

One of the more interesting features of the album is a two-page spread where Dr. B. is leaving a sentiment to Carrie, whom he calls Carrie Avery Johnson Lamprey, as he is about to embark on a journey to Europe in 1864.  It's intriguing to think of what his travel purpose might have been during such a difficult time in the United States.

  • Scrap of paper pasted to the page and appears to show a drawing by Dr. George Gray of Mrs. Lamprey holding a child, presumably Carrie Avery (Johnson) Lamprey after her marriage to Morris J. Lamprey. I believe this was the Dr. George Gray who was born April 29, 1829 at Hancock, New Hampshire, son of John and Hersina (Knight) Gray. • Mrs. Seddie E. Williams, signed on June 14, 1864. Someone, possibly Dr. C. or Dr. G., wrote a nice sentiment about Seddie on June 20, 1864. If Dr. G, perhaps it was Dr. George Gray.
