1880s+ Autograph Album of Wallace Homer of Monson, Maine

1880s autograph album that was given to Wallace Homer of Monson, Maine, at Christmas in 1880.

This album was donated to the Monson Historical Society.  See all of the pages, in order, here.

See another post that features a religious book that belonged to a Mrs. Sarah Homer, possibly Wallace's mother Sarah Mussey (Mathews) Homer.

Another post features a CDV and tintype album of members of the Homer and Mathews families and others of Monson, Maine, and other towns in Piscataquis County, as well as photographs of people who moved away from Maine.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 86 of Wallace's relatives, friends, pastor and schoolmates.  Many of his relatives had dispersed to other parts of New England, the Midwest and West but apparently come back to Monson for occasional family visits and had a chance to sign pages in the album.

An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Wallace Homer was born 29 December 1861 at Monson, Maine, the son of Edward Henry Hoar/Homer and Sarah Mussey (Mathews) Hoar/Homer, who were both born at Monson, Maine.

The 1870 Census of Monson gives Wallace's family's surname as Hoar.   The "History of Monson, Maine 1822 - 1972", compiled for Monson's Sesquicentennial commemoration, notes that Edward Henry Hoar and his brother James Rudolph Hoar (whose children Lula Homer and Charles Orlando Homer of Galion, Ohio, signed pages in Wallace's album) changed their surnames to Homer about 1874.  Duly, the 1880s Census of Monson gives Wallace's family's surname as Homer.

Wallace's paternal grandparents were William E. and Betsey (Goodell) Hoar.  His maternal grandparents were Elijah and Anna (Bennett) Mathews.  A few of the Homer clan and many of the Mathews clan signed pages in the album.

The family lived at became known as Homer Hill.

I believe the S. M. Homer of Monson, Maine, who signed on December 27, 1885, was Wallace's mother Sarah Mussey (Mathews) Homer.

Wallace was listed as single in every Census that I found, but I may have missed something.  His niece, Dorothy Homer, born about 1906, daughter of Edward Mathews Homer and Ann Eliza (Pennington) Homer, was living with him at the time of the 1920 Census, and she continued living with him at the farm on Homer Hill, even after her 1925 marriage to Max C. Forbus.  Dorothy's mother had died before 1914, when Dorothy's father married again, to Myrtle Estelle Huff.  Dorothy signed a page in her uncle's album in 1914.

Wallace Homer died at Monson, Maine, in 1952.

1870s Autograph Album of Charles E. Clark of Wells, Maine

1870s autograph album of Charles E. Clark of Wells, Maine.

The album is approximately 6-3/4" x 4" and contains the sentiments of 102 of Charles' relatives, friends and schoolmates at Franklin Academy at Dover, New Hampshire.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Charles E. Clark was born about June 1859 at Wells, Maine, the son of Andrew Cole Clark and his second wife Rhoda (Staples) Clark.  Andrew Cole Clark signed a page as  Andrew Cole Clark on April 4, 1875.  Rhoda (Staples) Clark signed on the same day, but in a different part of the album.

Andrew Cole Clark's first wife was Esther Fidelia (Chapman), with whom Andrew had son George Albert Clark who became a physician at Portland, Maine.  George signed a page in his half-brother Charles' album, as G. A. Clark, M.D., at Wells, Maine, on June 18, 1877.

From 1913 Obituary Record of the Graduates of Bowdoin College and the Medical College of Maine:

Following the tradition of naming a daughter from a man's subsequent marriage after a deceased previous wife, Andrew Cole Clark and Rhoda (Chapman) Clark named their daughter Fidelia J. Clark.  She signed a page in Charles' album as Delia on April 3, 1875.

On 21 February 1883 at Waltham, Massachusetts, Charles E. Clark married Alice S. Blackstone, daughter of William Collins Blackstone and Miranda (Fox) Blackstone.  Charles and Alice farmed at Wells, Maine; they had at least one child, a son Frank, born about 1885.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

A few of the pages had a notation penciled in later that indicated the signer was dead.  Among them was the page signed by Nellie O. Bragdon of Wells, Maine, who signed a page on September 16, 1878.

One signer, A. Lizzie Hubbard of Boston, Massachusetts, signed a page on August 7 "Centennial", so presumably 1876 and pasted on a little photograph.

Another signer was L. A. Hilling, who I assume to have been Lizzie A. Hilling, the daughter of painter John Hilling, whose family lived at Wells, Maine, during the time the inscriptions in the album were acquired.  He painted images of the Old South Church of Bath, Maine, one before a devastating fire, or at least before it was apparent, one during and another when the fire was farther along.

1880s Autograph Album of Sarah A. Swift of Sidney, Maine

1880s autograph album that I believe belonged to Sarah A. Swift of Sidney, Maine, daughter of Enoch and Sally (Bacon) Swift.

It's possible that the album belonged to another Sarah A. Swift of this large family.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Sarah Ann Swift was born 7 March 1836.   I don't believe she ever married.  She was working as a housekeeper at Lewiston, Maine, at the time of the 1900 Census.  She died 19 April 1919 at Lewiston, Maine and is buried with her parents at the Reynolds Cemetery at Sidney, Maine.

The album is approximately 7-1/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 50 of Sarah's relatives and friends in Maine and Massachusetts.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The album contains some pages of beautiful scenery, such as the illustration of Mount Washington below.  It's unlikely to be the Mount Washington in New Hampshire that I climbed as a kid.

The mountain below is more likely to be Mount Washington or one of the other Presidential Mountains in New Hampshire.

See the rest of the images of scenery at the end of this post.

The people below specified a relationship with Sarah, but there were many others.
  1. Flora L. Swift; signed at Sidney, Maine; cousin
  2. Lizzie E. Swift; signed at Sidney, Maine; cousin
  3. Lillian E. Swift; signed at Sidney, Maine; niece
  4. Lucy C. Milliken, New Bedford, Massachusetts; cousin

Sarah A. Swift's mother, Sarah Sally Bacon, was a sister to Lucia Ann (Bacon) Milliken.  Lucia, her husband Edward and several of their children and other members of their family signed pages.  Lucia signed a page on October 15, 1883.

Edward Milliken, Lucia's husband, signed a page at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on October 12, 1883.   He was born at Farmington, Maine, on 1 April 1815 and married Lucia Ann (Bacon) at Winthrop, Maine, on 27 November 1837.  Read more about Edward Milliken, blacksmith, lawyer, merchant, grocer and Massachusetts representative, and his descendants here.

1880s Autograph Album with Signers from Biddeford, Maine, and Kennebunk, Maine

1880s autograph album with signers from Biddeford, Maine, and Kennebunk, Maine.

The first signed page in the album is that of Bertha M. Burnham of Biddeford, Maine, but I don't know if she was the album owner or not.  Whoever it was loved Victorian scraps, particularly those of butterflies.  Bertha signed her page at Biddeford, Maine, on December 24, 1884.

Bertha's brother, Owen W. Burnham, also signed a page in the album at Biddeford, Maine, on December 30, 1884.

Bertha and Owen were the children of Andrew Haskell Burnham and Angeline B. (Hutchins) Burnham.  I believe the Andrew H. Burnham who signed a page at Biddeford, Maine, on December 30, 1884, was the father of Bertha and Owen, Andrew Haskell Burnham.

The album is approximately 7" x 4" and contains over 30 pages of sentiments, including a page with the sentiments of multiple people.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The page signed by multiple people appears to have been a musicial or religious event, I'm assuming at Biddeford or Kennebunk.  Signers include: 1) Etta M. Hopping of Paw Paw, Michigan; 2) Professor W. J. Harrington of Chicago, Illinois; 3) G. R. Sturgis of Detroit, Michigan; 4 & 5) Professor and Mrs. George of Chicago; 6) Miss Ella Maloney of Watkins, New York.

Another signer was the album owner's parson, Rev. T. P. Adams.

Among the people from the Redlon family who signed were Benjamin Emery Redlon and his wife Jerusha Atwood (Clevely) Bedlon of Kennebunk.
