1877-1885 Autograph Album of Caroline Matilda Lowe (1858-1932) of Southville in Southborough, Massachusetts

1877-1885 autograph album that belonged to Caroline Matilda Lowe (1858-1932), Carrie", of Southville, a village in Southborough, Massachusetts.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 56 of Carrie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.  One sentiment appears in Braille.

On the reverse of the first end paper, Carrie inscribed her name and the year, 1877, she started acquiring sentiments in her album.

Carrie was the daughter of John Lowe (1815-1896) and Charlotte Ann (Bruce) Lowe (1821-1902), who inscribed the first two pages after the title page.  Carrie's brother, John Walden Lowe (1860-1922),  did not inscribe a page in the album, unless it was removed.

Many other relatives inscribed pages in the album; some gave only their first names and mentioned a cousin relationship.

It's quite possible that the E. C. W. who drew this floral spray was Ethel C. Wadsworth herself.

1820s/1830s Autograph Album of Miss Caroline Avery, possibly Caroline Avery (1818-1899) of Greenland, New Hampshire

1820s/1830s autograph album of Miss Caroline Avery, whose name appears on the title page just below the right edge of the engraving.

One of the few inscriptions that shows a town was from Greenland, New Hampshire; others are from Newburyport, Massachusetts.  It's possible that Caroline may have lived in Greenland herself.  She may have been the Caroline Avery (1818-1899) of Greenland, New Hampshire, who would marry George Weeks (1810-1869).

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6" and contains hand colored engravings interspersed through and many pages of handwriting, but of that number some appear to copying the prose and poetry of literary figures. Those have the pencilled name of "Dr. Brown", written under the inked handwriting.

Most of the inscribers sign with a given name or an initial or set of initials, with the initials very hard to make out.  However, several people did pen their entire names and towns of residence, so not all was lost.

Album owner Martha R. Dickson (1864-1947) would marry Ralph L. Fifield in 1884 in Shelburne, New Hampshire.  On her marriage record, Mattie's birthplace is shown as St. Stephen Quebec, but it was more likely to have been St. Stephen, New Brunswick.  Another discrepancy found during research is her obituary, where her late husband was identified as Dr. William W. Fifield, who was, in fact, her son William Withee Fifield (1889-1919).

1830s/1840s autograph album of Miss Mary E. Allen, possibly of Binghamton, New York, or Owego, New York, or perhaps just over the Pennsylvania border.

Mary's name appears on the bottom edge of the title page, shown below.

The album, published by J. C. Riker of New York, measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over thirty of Mary's acquaintances, possibly some of them family members.  A few of the pages have engravings.

Sadly, it appears that some pages were removed from the album before it came into my hands.
