MATTANAWCOOK ACADEMY

Is located in the healthful and rapidly growing village of Lincoln, Maine, forty miles east of Bangor, on the direct line of the Maine Central Railroad.  Its immediate situation is a few rods from the center of the village, and overlooks Mattanawcook Lake on the one side and Mount Katahdin on the other.

The Depot, Postoffice, Telegraph and Express Offices are all within forty rods distance.

OBJECT

The school recently having undergone a thorough revision, has, in addition to the regular classical course which is designed for those desirous of fitting for college, three distinct courses: Academical, Normal and Commercial.

Diary of James Moore of the Lakewood area of Ellsworth, Maine. He kept his diary very intermittently until 1901 when he became more conscientious about keeping it up. If you look closely at the above image of the front cover, you will see his name, twice.

This diary was found with four other diaries that were kept by James' daughter-in-law Vesta Estella (Garland) Moore.

James Moore was born 30 May 1837 in Maine, the son of Gary Townsend Moore and wife Miriam (Garland) Moore. His paternal grandparents were John, Jr. and Polly (Townsend) Moore. His maternal grandparents were Josiah and Sarah "Sally" (Swett) Garland.

On 21 August 1858 James Moore married Laura Ann Garland, who was born 5 February 1838, at Ellsworth, Maine, the daughter of Leonard Jarvis Garland and wife Azuba A. "Zuby" (Moore) Garland. Her paternal grandparents were Josiah and Sarah "Sally" (Swett) Garland. Her maternal grandparents were Edward and Elizabeth B. "Betsey" (Maddocks) Moore.

James and Laura had four children that I could find, perhaps more.

1. John R. Moore, born 29 May 1959; m. Lois Anna Boynton; children: Lettie B. Moore; Howard G. Moore; Cecil E. Moore; Wesley Moore; Philip Moore 
2. Winfield Scott Moore, born 12 May 1862; m. Vesta Estella Garland; children: Nora Nettie Moore; Gary Townsend Moore 
3. Ellen Elvira Moore, born 11 March 1866; m. Francis Jeremiah Boynton; children: Leon; Lillian; Minnie; Laura; Rosamund 
4. Lorenda Ann Moore, born 23 September 1872; m. George Whitmore "Whit" Garland; children: Ambrose Winfield Garland; Viola May Garland; Mansell Rowe Garland; Delmar Alton Garland; Fannie Irene Garland; Mercy Beryl Garland; David Philander Garland; Betsey Garland 

James Moore died 27 March 1903, an event that a reader of the diary knows, sadly, is coming. His wife Laura Ann (Garland) Moore died 22 May 1921.

Wednesday, May 1, 1901. Scott and I been building [?] fence in the pasture & brush. Laura A. Moore has been making soap & had a hard time. Got dirt in the barrel and had to dip it out and strain it over and the barrel leaked and had to get a good barrel. Lois Moore and Cecil came up to our house tonight. Cecil wanted some plants.

Friday May 3, 1901. Scott and I been plowing down on the place he had of [?] Moore this side of the barn.
May 4, 1901. Aunt Betsey Garland gave Nora Moore 2 glass plates.
Sunday, May 5, 1901. I been down to the Chapel to meeting over best part of the day. Some showers & little snow and some hail. Scott and Vesta and Nora Moore has gone down to George Garland’s this afternoon.
Tuesday, May 7, 1901. Scott and I planted some potatoes this afternoon. Then Scott took Phillip the horse he had of [Hosy?] Phillips last fall and carried George Johnson up home in Otis and swapped him for a colt that is one year old and got $55 to boot. He gave Hosy Phillips $50 for the horse.

Saturday, May 11, 1901. Mrs. Jellison of Mariaville that was drowned at Jordan Bridge was found today. It lacked one day of being four weeks from the time she was drowned till they found her. John Tourtellotte came up and sheared our sheep. Rained most of this forenoon. Scott went down town and he paid Hosy Phillips $25 dollar on his note. That leaves $5 more due Phillips. I burned some brush piles.
Monday, May 13, 1901. I sowed some beets and carrots and parsnips in the garden. Scott was hauling off brush and rocks down to the place he had of John R. Moore. John R. Moore went up Green Lake for Charles [Gary, Lary?] to help fetch in [?] of stove wood.

Tuesday, May 14, 1901. Scott and I sold some oats and some peas today.

Wednesday, May 15, 1901. Whitmore Garland went down to Trenton to Edmund Hopkins and got him a [?]. Leonora and Vesta Moore went down to Uncle John this afternoon a little while.
Thursday, May 16, 1901. Laura and Vesta went down to Lyman Garland’s this afternoon. Whitmore Garland had his father and horse and Wellington Moore and Edy Garland planting for him. Scott Moore turned his colt that he had of George Jelllison out to pasture today.

Ellsworth, Friday, May 17, 1901. Scott Moore and I finished planting potatoes. Planted 4 bushels in the [Weston or Western] field and planted a row of corn.
Saturday, May 18, 1901. I sowed some turnip seed and fixed the wire fence. Scott and Vesta Moore went over to the woolen mill in Branch Pond and carried over their wool and they brought me a straw hat. Nora Moore and Letty Moore went down to Philander Jordan to a party tonight.
Sunday May 19, 1901. Whitmore Garland and family has been to our house to dinner today. Then Whit and Scott dug out a fox den and killed the old one and got two little ones and gave them to [?] Garland.

Ellsworth, May 22, 1901. Wednesday. I finished planting our garden. Scott Moore is hauling kill wood to Hosy Phillips.
Wednesday, May 29,1901. Whitmore Garland bought a team wagon of Charles Smith at Ellsworth Falls and fetched it home today. He paid, I think, $75 dollars.

Gary Moore Road might indicate the area in which James Moore lived and farmed.

From online research, hopefully correct - corrections requested:

Nelson Guy Barden was born 7 September 1895 [though his WWI draft registration shows 7 September 1896] at Madrid, Maine, the son of Charles Carr Barden and wife Mary Ada (Wing) Barden.  In 1918 at Phillips, Maine, he married Eva Gladys Thomas, who was born 29 July 1898 at Kingfield, Maine, the daughter of Leon A. Thomas and wife Mary Edith Stevens.  Nelson Guy Barden was working as a druggist in Massachusetts, per the 1930 Census.  The couple had at least three children.  Nelson died in 1978.


Sadly, graduate Donald William Norton, a 2nd Lieutenant, was killed 4 years after graduation, on 2 November 1918, near the close of  World War I and was buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery at Romagne, France.  He was born 15 March 1896 in Maine, the son of Lavella Augustus Norton and Imogene F. (Parker) Norton.  

Hortense Lucille Savage was born 7 December 1894 at Kingfield, Maine, the daughter of Ellery Turner Savage and wife Lucretia Pullen (Vose) Savage.  In 1915 at Kingfield, Hortense married Blaine Elbridge Atwood, who was born 30 August 1884 at Concord, Maine, the son of Manley George Atwood and wife Addie Frances (Moulton) Atwood.  I found one child for them, a daughter.  Hortense Lucille (Savage) Atwood died in 1926.


Hazel May Weymouth was born 15 November 1895 at Freeman Plantation, Maine, the daughter of Fred Clyde Wemouth and wife Mary Elizabeth (Fuller) Weymouth.   In 1917 at Lewiston, Maine, Hazel married William Harold Hutchins, who was born 11 Jan 1891 at Fowler, New York, the son of Rev. Richard Baxter Hutchins and his first wife, Flora Amelia (Gibbs) Hutchins, who died when William Harold was about two.  His father was a Maine native but was a minister at Fowler, New York for a time.  Hazel and William had at least three children.  I found them in the 1930 Census of Kingfield, Maine.  Hazel May (Weymouth) Hutchins died in 1978.

Daisy E. Williamson was born 11 June 1895 at New Portland, Maine, the daughter of Samuel Johnson Williamson and wife Effie Annie (Pierce) Williamson.  Daisy married Swedish immigrant Gust Conrad Agren, the son of Gust Fred Agren and Katherine L. (Olson) Agren.   Many records show Daisy's name as Daisy L. Williamson, with the L standing for Lizzie.  Daisy and Gust Conrad Agren had at least five children and lived at New Portland, Maine.  Daisy died in 1962.

Owner's name on front cover: H. J. Ware - Henry J. Ware

Waterville College was the second name of the college now known as Colby College.  It was founded in 1813 by Reverend Jeremiah Chaplin, a Baptist minister, as the Maine Literary and Theological Institution.  Shortly after Maine became a state, the school was renamed Waterville College.

During the Civil War, Waterville College, then an all-male institution, nearly closed, as many prospective students had gone off to war.  Maine native Gardner Colby, a businessman in Boston, stepped forward with a generous donation to tide things over, and the school was renamed in his honor.   Colby College began accepting female students in 1871.

Henry J. Ware was born 21 May 1825 at Athens, Maine, the son of Abel and Elizabeth Ross (Thomas) Ware. Sadly, Henry died 28 June 1847 before he had much of a chance, if any, to put his education to good use.

Vintage Memento of a Fair at Heath GAR Post, Gardiner, Maine

Undated but very old memento advertising a Fair sponsored by Heath Post, G.A.R. at the Coliseum on Marc 18th, 19th and 20th.  


Maine had two Grand Army of the Republic posts by the name of Heath, but the one in Waterville was known as the W. S. Heath Post to distinguish it from the Heath Post, which was located at Gardiner, Maine.


The GAR Heath Post at Gardiner was named for distinguished citizen, Alvan M. C. Heath, who died 16 December 1862 as a result of wounds at the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia.  Before enlisting in the 16th Regiment of Maine Volunteer Infantry early on in the war, he had been a newspaper editor, founder of the Gardiner Home Journal.


Alvan M. C. Heath was born about 1829 at Windsor, Maine, the son of Dr. Asa Alexis Heath and Margaret (Boynton) Heath.  His paternal grandparents were Asa and Sarah (Moore) Heath.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel and Mary (Moore) Boynton.  


On 4 August 1852, Alvan M. C. Heath married Sarah Hinkley Philbrook, who was born 23 July 1831 at Fairfield, Maine, the daughter of Milton and Orrilla A. (Kendall) Philbrook.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert and Mary (Pitts) Philbrook.  Her maternal grandparents were William Kendall, Jr., and wife Sarah (Chase) Kendall.


The couple had four children at Gardiner, Maine:

• Herbert Milton Heath (27 Aug 1853-18 Aug 1912), who was a prominent student at Bowdoin College, a principal at Washington Academy in East Machias; a distinguished lawyer and legislator; married Laura Susan Gardiner of Machias, Maine; five children
• Willis Kendall Heath (12 Feb 1855-10 Oct 1927), an accountant; married Lucinda S. Newell; they had at least three children; moved to Massachusetts; Willis K. Heath died at Gardiner, Maine
• Frederick Carroll Heath (19 Jan 1957-16 Oct 1918), a distinguished student, who also served as principal of Washington Academy at East Machias, Maine, before graduating first in his medical class at Maine Medical College at Bowdoin; eventually becoming a prominent opthalmologist at Indianapolis, Indiana; married 1) Mary M. Anderson, who died in 1892; 2) Agnes Ralston Cochrane, with whom he had two daughters, one of whom died in childhood
• Emma Gertrude Heath (20 Jan 1859-23 Nov 1935), graduated from Hahnemann Medical College at Chicago, practiced at Chicago and then returned to Gardiner, where she became a prominent physician in the Augusta, Maine area.

Their father was not the only military hero in their line.  Through their father, they descended from Revolutionary War general Heath; through their mother, Revolutionary War general Kendall.

Information on the Battle of Fredericksburg of May 13, 1862.  Alvan M. C. Heath died three days later of wounds received in this battle.
