1878-1885 Autograph Album of Emma C. Lang of Mishawaka, Indiana

Autograph album kept from 1878 to 1885 by owner Emma C. Lang of Mishawaka, Indiana.  She received the album on October 7, 1878.

It appears from inscriptions that Emma was a student at the Northern Indiana Normal and Business Institute at Valparaiso, Indiana.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 50 people, some of whom also inscribed shared pages, one of which also features Emma's autograph.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Emma C. Lang was born July 11, 1859 in Indiana, the daughter of Frederick Lang and Ernestina M. (Frank) Lang.  Emma's FindaGrave memorial notes that she was born in 1853, but her parents married in 1857.

One page inscribed in German is too faint for my German friend to decipher, except for the word "Lang".  This page might have been inscribed by one of Emma's parents or paternal grandparents, though I believe that Emma's father's parents had both died by the time she started her album.

Another page was inscribed by Emma's Grandmother Frank, who would have been Catharine (Roupp) Frank

Read more about the Lang family in Mishawaka, Indiana, in Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties, Indiana: Together with Biographies of Many Prominent Men of Northern Indiana and of the Whole State, Both Living and Dead, published by the Goodspeed Brothers in 1893.  As noted in the section dealing with the Lang family, Emma had already died by this point, in 1890.

On January 19, 1887 in St. Joseph County, Indiana, Emma C. Lang married Frank Edward Milburn.  They had a son, William Frank Milburn, born in 1888, before Emma's untimely death in 1890.  Frank later married Edith Drinkwater and had several more children.

Emma's buried in the Mishawaka City Cemetery at Mishawaka, Indiana, with Lang and Milburn relatives.
