1910-1914 Autograph Album of Harry Raymond Bowers of Omar, New York

1910-1914 autograph album of Harry Raymond Bowers of Omar, New York, presumably the village in Alexandria, New York, in Jefferson County.

The album has a copper embellishment on the front cover and measures approximately 6-1/2" x 4-1/4".  It contains the sentiments of 12 of Harry's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Harry Raymond Bowers was born September 22, 1897 in Jefferson County, New York, the son of Sidney Theodore Bowers and Cora A. (Collins) Bowers.  Harry had a sister, Hazel L. Bowers, who inscribed a page in his album on February 14, 1911.

Two signers indicated they were Harry's cousins: Grace Keech, who inscribed a page on August 1, 1911; and Mary Keech, who inscribed a page on July 17, 1912.

Between 1920 an 1930, Harry Raymond Bowers married Viola Norton.  They settled at Alexandria, New York.  Viola died in 1983, and Harry in 1984.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1884-1892 Autograph Album of Ida (Mills) Crowe of Bath, New York

1884-1892 autograph album that belonged to Ida Mills of Bath, New York, before and after her marriage to E. B. Crowe.  Signers mentioned what I believe to be Sonora, New York, and Sanova, New York.  I may have misread some of them, or all of them.

The album, in rough condition, measures approximately 6" x 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 38 of Ida's relatives, in-laws and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  Many of the names are hard to decipher, so I may have gotten them wrong.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ida Mills was born September 7, 1868 at Ottawa, Michigan, the daughter of Aaron and Aurilla (Moss) Mills.  One of Ida's siblings, sister Lydia P. Mills, inscribed a page in her album, a page shared with Edd Burd and Frank M?.  Lydia and Edward E. Burd married about 1897.  Edward's mother, Sarah Ann (Mills) Burd, was the sister of Ida's father Aaron Mills.

Two other people named Burd signed pages in the album, one of whom, Mary M. Burd, called herself Ida's cousin on the page inscribed at Hammondsport, New York, on November 19, 1884.  A Mel Burd of Hammondsport, New York, also inscribed a page.  And two other people names Mills inscribed pages in the album: Edward Mills and Henry J. Mills, both of Savona, New York.

Although I haven't found an actual marriage record, it appears that Ida married E. B. Crowe during the 1884-1885 time frame of the album.  One signer, Augusta Ames, mentions Ida's recent or upcoming marriage on the page she inscribed at Savona, New York, on July 30, 1884.

E. B. Crowe himself signed a page as "Your Husband", on "1-3-1885" at Sonora, New York.  I believe he was Eli B. Crowe or Crow, son of William and Emily Crow/Crowe of Bath, New York.

One signer, G. Crow, called himself Ida's brother.  Assuming that E. B. Crowe was Eli B. Crowe, the signer may have been Germaine Crow/Crowe of Bath, New York.

Eli had a sister Mary Crow/Crowe.  She may have been the L. Mary Crowe who inscribed a page at Bath, New York, on August 30, 1885.

By 1900, Ida was living with her parents at Urbana, New York.  She was listed as married, but E. B. Crowe was not listed in the household.  She's still shown as married in the 1910 and 1920 Censuses, living with her widowed mother Aurilla (Moss) Mills, again with no E. B. Crowe listed.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

F [?] Rivkin inscribed a page with a beautiful design on May 23, 1884.  He called himself a "Stranger", so he may not have been from Steuben County, New York, or even from New York at all.

1882-1899 Autograph Album of Berthia or Bertha Williams of Steamburg, New York; m. John W. Eastman

1882-1899 autograph album that belonged to Berthia Williams of Steamburg, New York, a village in the town of Coldspring, New York.  Most records show her as Bertha Williams, but she spelled her name as Berthia on the reverse of the first end paper.

The album was a present from Berthia's cousin Ranie E. Hotchkiss, who inscribed a presentation page and another page.

The album measures approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 50 of Berthia's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Berthia or Bertha Williams was born in April 1853, the daughter of George Alva Williams and Lovisa (Morse) Williams.  Both of Berthia's parents inscribed pages in her album.  Her father George Alva Williams:

Berthia's mother inscribed facing pages near the end of the album.

Berthia's older sister, Emily (Williams) Barton, wife of Francis M. Barton, inscribed a page at Steamburg, New York, on January 18, 1886.

Other relatives who inscribed pages were Aunt Matilda; Cousin Ida Williams; Aunt Annie.  And it's likely that the J. W. Eastman who inscribed a page at Steamburg, New York, on July 6, 1884, was John W. Eastman, Berthia's future husband.  His mother, Elvira Eva (Wellman) Eastman, also inscribed a page.

John and Berthia lived at Coldspring, New York and had at least one child, daughter Millie M. Eastman.  John died in 1922 and Bertha in 1933.  They're buried at the Steamburg Cemetery, with Eastman and Williams relatives.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1889-1917 Autograph Album of Irma Rebecca Barrie of Mason City, Iowa; married John Franklin Peeler

1889-1917 autograph album that belonged to Irma Rebecca Peeler of Mason City, Iowa.  Only one inscription is out of the 1889-1890s era, and that's on the inside front cover, dated December 2, 1917 and addressed to Irma by her married name of Mrs. Peeler.

The album was presented to Irma by her mother Viola Sophia (Pynchon or Pychon) Barrie on December 25, 1889.

The album measures approximately 6" x 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of about 50 of Irma's relatives, friends, schoolmates and pastor.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Irma Rebecca Barrie was born at New Hampson, Iowa, on June 7, 1874, the daughter of Orlo Goodrich Barrie and Viola Sophia (Pynchon or Pychon) Barrie, both of whom inscribed pages in the album.  Orlo dated his page January 1, 1890; Viola inscribed her page the same day that she gave it to Irma, December 25, 1889, at Mason City, Iowa.

Irma's sister younger sister Annie Barrie inscribed numerous pages in the album, i.e.

On July 17, 1892 at Mason City, Iowa, Irma Rebecca Barrie married John Franklin Peeler, son of Abner Charles Peeler, Jr., and Rachel (Adams) Peeler.  John's half-sister Gertie Peeler inscribed a page in Irma's album in August 1890 at Lehigh, Iowa.

Irma and John moved, at some point, to the Hood River, Oregon area.  They had, I believe, three children, daughters Edith Adele Peeler; Grace Luella Peeler; and Eldon Franklin Peeler.  John died in 1931, and Irma in 1934.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Pastor Joel Brown inscribed a page at Lehigh, Iowa, on September 19, 1890.

1880s Autograph Album of Louisa M. Schmitt of Buffalo, New York

1880s autograph album of Louisa M. Schmitt of Buffalo, New York.

I found several women named Louisa Schmitt in the Buffalo, New York, area.  Based on the ages of some of the signers who mentioned a possible school affiliation, I'm guessing that this Louisa was born about 1872, which might make her the daughter of George and Louisa (Walter or Walker) Schmitt.

A Louisa M. Schmitt, perhaps the album owner's mother or other relative, inscribed a page in a German style of handwriting.

Several signers mentioned "No. 31", which may have been the school that they and Louisa attended.

One signer, Fritz Holzscheiter, inscribed several pages in the album, including the first one after the ownership page.

The album measures approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 20 people.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

If, based on the list of signers, you have a theory as to the identity of Louisa M. Schmitt, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s/90s Autograph Album of Jennie R. Bush of San Jose, California; student at State Normal School

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Jennie R. Bush of San Jose, California.  Many of the autographs were acquired from fellow students at the State Normal School at San Jose, California, most, presumably, from the Class of 1883.  Later pages were inscribed at Garberville, California, where Jennie may have had a teaching job or was perhaps recuperating; see the excerpt below.

From "A Historical Sketch of the State Normal School at San Jose, California", published in 1889:

The album, a large one, measures about 8-1/4" x 6-3/4" and contains the sentiments of perhaps 230 or so people, some of whom signed more than once, some of whom signed one page as a married couple and some of whom signed group pages with as many as 27 names.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The only relative who inscribed a page was Jennie's sister Annie Marie Bush, with pages signed before and after her marriage to Charles Henry Plaskett about 1894.  Incidentally, it appears that Jennie married Dudley William Plaskett, older brother of Anna Marie's husband Charles Henry Plaskett, about 1894; perhaps they had a double wedding.  Sadly, however, neither marriage lasted; unlike Anna, I don't believe Jennie had any children.

Most online trees have the sisters' parents as teacher Soloman Bush and wife Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Bush, who had moved to California from Busti, New York.  Several of the Censuses have Jennie's year of birth as about May 1870, which would have made Jennie improbably young to have been in the Class of 1883 at the State Normal School.  The 1920 Census gives her year of birth as 1862, which seems more fitting.

With a bit more digging, I found that Soloman and Anna had a daughter Jane Rhoda born about 1849 in New York, and I found a California death record for a Jennie R. Plaskett, born about 1849, died July 12, 1934 at Monterey, California.  That would have made Jennie in her thirties when she attended State Normal School.  Anna Marie Bush was born June 5, 1874, as shown on her 1946 California death record.

In addition to teaching, Jennie served as postmaster at Larabee, California.  She was also a noted naturalist, with an extensive collection of shells displayed at the State Normal School Museum.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed, below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The album contains numerous items tucked inside, including what appears to be a birthday card from Annie M. Bush to her mother, Mrs. A. C. Bush or Mrs. A. E. Bush.  If Mrs. A. E. Bush, that might be Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Bush.

Even more interesting is the sketch of a woman done in Busti, New York in 1860; it's tempting to think that the sketch might be of Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Bush or other family member.

There's also a photograph of an elderly woman, possibly a Bush or Brown relative.
