1870-1904 Autograph Album of Ida May Gray of Boston, Massachusetts; Before and After her Marriage to Alexander Dunn

1870s autograph album of Ida May Gray, before and after her marriage to Alexander Dunn.

Incidentally, the album was purchased with another album from the Boston, Massachusetts, area that belonged to a "Ria" and featured pages signed by Ida's younger brother Edgar Elmer Gray and younger half-brother Milford Ernest Somes.  One of Ria's parents was presumably the son or daughter of Jesse and Mary Salmon of New York and Boston, as Maria J. Salmon of Charlestown, Massachusetts, called Ria her niece.  I haven't yet teased out the connection between the two albums; hopefully a reader can solve the mystery.

Ida's album may have been a Christmas or New Year present; the first page was inscribed by her brother William Ellery Gray in January 1876.  His future wife Anna E. Newmarch also signed a page.

The album is approximately 8" x 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 26 of Ida's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Ida May Gray was born 4 February 1851 at Edgecomb, Maine, the daughter of Charles Ashley Gray and Hepzibah R. (Huff), who were born at New York, New York, and Edgecomb, Maine, respectively.  You can see photographs of Charles Ashley Gray and Hepzibah R. (Huff) Gray here.

Ida's paternal grandparents were James and Sarah Amelia (Ashley) Gray.  Her maternal grandparents were John and Charlotte (Billings) Huff.

Both of Ida's parents had children from other marriages, so Ida had older and younger half-siblings, as well as four full siblings.  Charles A. Gray, Ida's older half brother, from her father's first marriage to Sophia (Hersey), signed a page twice, once on August 26, 1890, and again on July 2, 1904, the last date of an autograph in the album.

After Ida's father Charles Ashley Gray died, her mother Hepzibah R. (Huff) Gray married Joel Somes, son of David and Abigail (Trask) Somes.  Joel Somes was born 1 August 1805 at Edgecomb, Maine.  Hepzibah and Joel had two children, Julia E. Somes and Milford Ernest Somes.  Julia signed a page in Ida's album on June 15, 1873; she died 24 September 1884 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Milford Ernest Somes, "alias Reddy", inscribed two pages in the album, first on December 25, 1871, and again on August 15, 1883.

Ida's sister, Alice Eva (Gray) Drake signed a page as A. E. D. on December 25, 1871.  The C. E. Drake who signed a day earlier on December 24, 1871, was likely Alice Eva's husband, Charles E. Drake.

Ida's brother Edgar Elmer Gray didn't sign a page in this album, but he did sign one in the companion album mentioned above, at Boston, Massachusetts, on May 20, 1876.

On 14 September 1870 at Boston, Massachusetts, Ida May Gray married Scottish immigrant Alexander Dunn, who was born May 16, 1846, son of Alexander Dunn and his first wife, Elizabeth (Paul) Dunn, and was one of four siblings born in Scotland.  Elizabeth (Paul) Dunn died in 1856, and it looks as though the remaining family members then left for the United States.

Young Alexander's father Alexander married Mary Mitchell White at Hingham, Massachusetts, on August 6, 1861 and had three more children, one of whom, Mary E. Dunn, signed a page at South Hingham, Massachusetts, on July 23, 1876.

Ida and Alexander had, I believe, three sons: though I noticed a reference online to a daughter Alice, I couldn't find a record of her:

2. William Lyman Dunn, born August 11, 1874 at Boston, Massachusetts
3. Arthur Clarence Dunn, born July 17, 1877 at Boston, Massachusetts

1880s Autograph Album of Elsie; Many Signers from Ipswich, Massachusetts

1880s autograph album that belonged to an Elsie, possibly from Ipswich, Massachusetts, the Boston area, or Baltimore, Maryland.  Many of the signers had a connection to the Appleton and Heard families of Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Hopefully a reader can tease out Elsie's identity.

The album was purchased with an 1867 diary from the Newbury, Massachusetts, area, filled mostly with laconic weather observations by its farmer owner.

The album measures approximately 8" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 35 of Elsie's friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers, with residence information, appears at the end of this post.

In the event that Elsie lived at Ipswich, I found an Elsie M. Cartledge, daughter of William and Ellen (Jarvis) Cartledge.  She would marry Charles E. Goodhue, son of William and Caroline (Bill) Goodhue, at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1893.  However, this Elsie was probably a tad too young.

Many of the signers had a connection to Appleton Farms at Ipswich, Massachusetts, which was founded by Samuel Appleton in 1636, carried on for well over 300 years by members of the Appleton family and operated today by the Trustees of Reservations.

Among the signers is James W. Appleton, who signed his page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on September 13, 1883.  He wasn't the only signer to mention a fire; there must be a story there!

Henrietta Greenleaf Woods Smith, daughter of Rev. John Cotton Smith and Harriet Hooper (Appleton) Smith signed two pages, one on July 7, 1882 at Briar Hill, Ipswich, Massachusetts, and one on September 13, 1883 at Ipswich, Massachusetts.  The Briar Hill House at Appleton Farms was the Smith family's summer home.  Read more about the Briar Hill House here.

Other signers were members of the Heard family of Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Harvard Business School had an exhibit, still available online, on this family, entitled "A Chronicle of the China Trade; the Records of Augustine Heard & Co., 1840-1877".

The A. F. Heard who signed a page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in July 1884 and cited Byron's "Don Juan" was presumably Albert Farley Heard, who worked in the China trade with his uncle Augustine Heard; acted as a liaison between Russia and China for a number of years; was secretary to fellow Massachusetts native William Crowninshield Endicott, who was then War Secretary under Grover Cleveland; and, finally, served as the U.S. Army Librarian.  Read more about Albert Farley Heard here - scroll down a bit and you'll find two paragraphs on him, as well as a photograph.  And read "Poisoning by Wholesale: a Reminiscence of China Life", by Albert Farley Heard, here, transcribed by Robert M. Another resource online with Heard family information is "Amy Heard, Letters from the Gilded Age", transcribed, translated and edited by Robert M. Gray in 2005.  I believe the Max Heard who signed a page in Elsie's album on June 23, 1883, was Amy's sister Helen Maxima Heard, "Max", who is mentioned frequently throughout; there's even a photograph.  Max would later marry Max von Brandt, German Plenipotentiary to Japan 1860-1875 and to China 1875-1893.  See a robe here that belonged to either Max or her sister Amy.

Baltimore, Maryland, was represented by the Gilman family, four of whom signed pages in March of 1882, and by George Leeds.  Daniel Coit Gilman, first president of Johns Hopkins University, and his second wife Elizabeth Dwight (Woolsey) Gilman shared a page.  Daniel's daughters Lizzie and Alice, whose mother was Daniel's first wife Mary Van Winker (Ketcham) Gilman, signed individual pages.

George Leeds signed his page at Baltimore, Maryland, on March 22, 1882.  Refer to the list below for more people with Leeds in their name.

1885-1888 autograph album that belonged to Willard E. Demeritt of West Newfield, Maine.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4, with puffy covers, and contains the sentiments of 12 of Willard's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers, their residences and any family relationship mentioned, appears at the end of this post.

Willard E. Demeritt was born about July 1860 at Bradford, Massachusetts, the son of David Jackson Demeritt and Hannah A. (Nason) Demeritt, who were born at Ossipee, New Hampshire, and, I believe, Newfield, Maine, respectively.

One of Willard's six siblings, his sister Hattie B. Demeritt of West Newfield, Maine, signed a page on February 18, 1888.

Willard's cousin, Joseph R. Demeritt, signed a page at Boston, Massachusetts, on April 22, 1885.  He was the son of James Monroe Demeritt, who was a brother of Willard's father, David Jackson Demeritt.

Willard's aunt by marriage, Harriet Oxnard (Metcalf) Demeritt, signed a page at Granite, New Hampshire, on March 15, 1885.  "Hattie" was the wife of Calvin Sanders Demeritt, another brother of Willard's father, David Jackson Demeritt.

On March 17, 1886 at Effingham, New Hampshire, Willard E. Demeritt married Laura J. Savage.  Laura, the daughter of David and Jane M. (Hazlett) Savage, was born March 12, 1863 at East Boston, Massachusetts.  Before her marriage, on March 14, 1885 at East Boston, Massachusetts, Laura signed a page in Willard's album.

Laura's sister Mabel H. Savage signed the page following Laura's, at East Boston, Massachusetts, on June 26, 1885.

Willard and Laura settled at Newfield, Maine, and raised, I believe, two children, both sons.  Willard was a merchant.

Oren Lovell Farwell was born 19 April 1882 at Harrisville, New Hampshire, the son of Corban Curtis Farwell and Delia L. (Yardley) Farwell, who farmed in the vicinity of Silver Lake.  

In the 1880s, when the railroad came to the area, the farm sold lakefront lots and, later, ice to the summer residents.  There's still a Farwell Farm in Harrisville today, though I don't know if members of the same family are operating it.  In 1901, Corban Curtis Farwell built a house that still stands: the Corban C. Farwell Homestead, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. 

Read the "Individual Record" of Oren Lovell Farwell at New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts here.  A 1909 publication, State of New Hampshire Reports 1907-1908, published in 1909, indicates that after graduation he was at Chesham, New Hampshire, presumably working on the family farm at Harrisville.

Oren Lovell Farwell married Emo Millicent Ruffle, daughter of James and Electa Mariah (Farwell) Ruffle.  They lived at Harrisville, New Hampshire and raised a family of five or more children.  They farmed on the Farwell home farm; Oren was active in town affairs.   There's a record in a 1919 issue of "The Shorthorn World and Farm Magazine", where he purchased a Milking Shorthorn bull and heifer.  Chesham, New Hampshire, was the farm's mailing address.

Emo Millicent (Ruffle) Farwell died in 1934.  Oren was still alive in 1942 when he completed a World War II Registration Card.  He had apparently died by 1955 when the town report of Harrisville, New Hampshire included an item in its warrant about accepting $200 from Oren's estate for care of the Oren L. Farwell cemetery lot.

James Dennis Cash - or James Denis Cash - was born 7 May 1887, the son, I believe, of Thomas A. Cash and Ida F. (Larkin) Cash. The reason for my hesitation is that in the 1900 Census of Manchester, he's shown living in the household of Hannibal and Addie Dunaway and enumerated as their son.  However, on his marriage records, he lists Thomas A. Cash and Ida F. (Larkin) Cash.

Read the "Individual Record" of James Dennis Cash at New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts here.  A 1909 publication, State of New Hampshire Reports 1907-1908, published in 1909, indicates that he was a teacher in New Hampshire.

On 16 April 1915 at Manchester, New Hampshire, James married Florence M. Charnley, daughter of Alexander and Frances (Riley) Charnley.  Sadly, Florence died of complications of childbirth on 30 June 1916 at Manchester, New Hampshire, and was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery.  Her child was stillborn.

On 27 June 1923 at Manchester, New Hampshire, James married Esther M. Maloney, daughter of Stephen and Ellen (McCarthy) Maloney.  They had, I believe, two children, a daughter and a son.

The family of four was living at Manchester, New Hampshire, at the time of enumeration of the 1930 Census; James was working as a civil engineer at either a cotton mill or a carton mill.  By 1940, the family of four was still together at Manchester, New Hampshire; James was working as an inspector for the State of New Hampshire.

1870s/1880s+ Autograph Album of Inez C. Holcomb of Windsor Locks, Connecticut

1870s/1880s autograph album of Inez C. Holcomb of Windsor Locks, Connecticut.  Two pages were signed in a later era, in 1903 and 1904.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 6" and contains the sentiments of 90 of Inez's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers, complete with any residence and school information, appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Inez C. Holcomb was born 3 April 1859 in Connecticut, the daughter of Nathan R. Holcomb and Caroline C. (Hazard) Holcomb.  Nathan R. Holcomb died in 1873, before Inez began compiling autographs, but she apparently found a paper that her father had signed in 1870 and pasted it into her album.

Inez's mother Caroline C. (Hazard) Holcomb of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, inscribed a page in the album on January 2, 1879.  She would die in 1883.

Inez's sister Ella Holcomb signed a page at Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on August 22, 1875; her middle initial was C or O or ?

The handwritten calling card of Inez's younger brother Burton Holcomb is inserted into one page.  Sadly, Burton, who was born in 1862, died in 1875.  It may not have been Burton who inserted the card, but Inez, after his death.

Inez had a brother Horace who died in infancy in 1854.

I think the Agnes C. Holcomb enumerated in 1910 with the Phillips family of Hartford, Connecticut, was actually Inez C. Holcomb.  One of the people in the household, Alice C. Phillips, was likely the Alice Phillips who called herself Inez's cousin, on the page she signed on March 10, 1903.  She included a sketch of Inez!

Alice's parents were Joseph Henry Phillips and Clara Josephine (Fiege) Phillips.  Before her marriage to Joseph Henry Phillips, Clara Josephine (Fiege) Phillips signed a page in  Inez's album.  Clara's parents were Augustus and Flora (Hazard) Fiege.  I believe that Flora and Inez's mother Caroline C. (Hazard) Holcomb were sisters.

About a month after the enumeration of the 1910 Census, Inez was badly injured in a railway accident.   Whether or not this accident contributed to her death on 11 March 1917 at Windsor Locks, Connecticut, I don't know.

These two albums, plus a Connecticut one and two 19th century Phillips Exeter Academy graduation photographs, came to me from a friend made through an heirloom reunification.  He found them in an antique shop and is hoping that a descendant happens by.

The album measures approximately 8" x 6" and contains the sentiments of 22 of Marianna's relatives, friends and students.  An alphabetical list of the signers, with any residence and school affiliation information, appears at the end of this post.

Marianna Edwards was born about 1853, presumably at Middle Island, New York, the daughter of D. Floyd Edwards and Sarah A. (Hawkins) Edwards, "Sally".   Marianna's parents inscribed pages in her earlier album.

There's an interesting history and photograph of the Edwards House at Middle Island, New York here.  It mentions that Jonathan Edwards acquired 300 acres at Middle Island, New York, after serving in the French and Indian War.  The farm passed down to his son, and then to his grandson, both named Jonathan, before passing to his great grandson D. Floyd Edwards.  The last Edwards to live in the house was Marianna's brother Victor F. Edwards.

All three of Marianna's siblings signed pages in her earlier album.  In this one, Adelia Charity Edwards and Victor F. Edwards did not.  However, Marianna's younger sister Ida F. Edwards and younger brother Edward H. Edwards signed pages, Edward at Middle Island, New York, on October 6, 1885.  Ida didn't date her page but mentioned this acronym: S.C.A.H.

Also signing in both albums was Lewis R. Edwards, brother of Marianna's father, D. Floyd Edwards.

Marianna was working as a school teacher and living with her parents at the time of the 1880 Census.   According to WorldCat, the town of Brookhaven holds the register she kept as a teacher during the 1877-1878 school year at District 17.

Marianna's student, Martha E. Taylor of Middle Island, New York, inscribed a page on January 29, 1885.

According to this site, on 3 May 1887 at Middle Island, New York, Marianna Edwards of Middle Island and John Davis of St. Johnland, New York, were married by Rev. Powell.

Sadly, Marianna (Edwards) Davis died at age 45 on 24 February 1898.  She's buried with her parents at the Union Cemetery at Middle Island, New York.
