1876-1914 Autograph Album of the Merrill Family of Danvers and Danversport, Massachusetts

Autograph album that served two generations of the Merrill/Sawyer family of Danvers and Danversport, Massachusetts.

The few few pages of the album are missing, including the title page and any ownership page that might have identified the original owner, who was likely either Joseph Merrill or his future wife Mary Frances Sawyer, "Fannie".  There's a page with faint handwriting that appears to have been signed by Joseph Merrill in 1876, which would seem to point to Fannie as the original owner.

Later on, the album was taken over by Joseph and Fannie's children, most of whom signed in the album and had some of their friends sign.  The family by then was living at 10 River Street, Danvers, apparently in the Danversport section, as some of the children indicated.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Joseph Merrill and Mary Frances Sawyer, "Fannie", were married 22 December 1880 at Danvers, Massachusetts.  Joseph's parents were George G. and Eliza (Thibodeau) Merrill.  Fannie's parents were William H. and Mary (Grey) Sawyer.

All of the children of Joseph and Fannie signed pages in the album, some numerous times.  The children:

  1. Joseph Henry Merrill, born 12 November 1881 at Danvers, Massachusetts; became an entomologist according to his Massachusetts Mason record.  His future wife, Lillian Briggs, signed a page in the album. He signed the album at Danversport, Massachusetts, on November 30, 1897.

2.  Charles O. Merrill, born 8 September 1883 at Danvers, Massachusetts; m. Amy Maria Peal.  He signed a page on November 30, 1897 and indicated he was at H.H.S.

3.  William Gardner Merrill, born 5 August 1885 at Danvers, Massachusetts; married Lucy Milton.   The Willie Merrill who signed a page may have been William Gardner Merrill.

4.  Frederick Sawyer Merrill, born 20 February 1889 at Danvers, Massachusetts; married Winifred Dahl.  Fred signed several pages; the top of the two shown below when he was 9, about 1908, and the other on July 10, 1912.  He was away from Danvers, somewhere where the temperature was 102 degrees F.

5.  John Edward Merrill, born 2 November 1890 at Danvers, Massachusetts; married Alice M. Colmer.  John signed a page when he was 7 years old.

6.  Marjorie Grey Merrill, born 7 November 1892 at Danvers, Massachusetts; married Henry Augustus King.  Marjorie signed several pages in the album.  She signed this page, below, in 1906 when she was 13 years old.

7.  Martha Felton Merrill, born 2 October 1895 at Danvers, Massachusetts; worked for a bank.  She signed several pages and seemed to be the person collecting autographs in the album's second life.  My favorite of her pages is this one.  I think it was Martha who wrote her name and those of three of her siblings.

8.  George Harold Merrill, who went by his middle name, born 13 January 1897 at Danvers, Massachusetts; married Marion Alberta Wharff.  He signed a page on December 2, 1908.

Two of the pages signed in the later era have cute illustrations.  One appears to show Florence L. Kelley, or perhaps it was that Florence drew the little girl and signed her name to it.

James Lewis Hawes drew two sketches of the same person, perhaps his teacher.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1904-1910 Autograph Album of Elizabeth M. Clark of North Hampton, New Hampshire

1904-1910 autograph album of Elizabeth M. Clark of North Hampton, New Hampshire.

The title page and perhaps other pages are missing at the beginning of the album but one page was inscribed to the owner, and several pages were signed by relatives, which taken together, also identified the owner as Elizabeth M. Clark.

The page below was inscribed to Elizabeth M. Clark of North Hampton, New Hampshire, by Lila C. Moulton, who signed her page on May 25, 1904.

The album is approximately 6-1/2" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 49 of Elizabeth's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the senders appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Elizabeth M. Clark was born about 1895 at North Hampton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Albion S. and Ida May (Cammett) Cousens Clark.  Albion S. Clark was the son of Thomas and Mary H. (Day) Clark.  Ida May (Cammett) Cousens Clark was the daughter of Stephen and Sarah Eunice (Healey) Cammett.

One confusing fact is that there is a death record for a Mary Lizzie Clark, daughter of Albion and Ida (Cammett) Clark, born 25 May 1895, who died 13 days later, according to a Massachusetts Death Record.  Possibly Elizabeth M. Clark was a surviving twin?

Elizabeth's father, Albion S. Clark, was first married to, I think, Elizabeth Ann (Otis) Clark; they had daughter Ethel Maude Clark, born 11 December 1881 at North Berwick, Maine.  Ethel, then living at West Wrentham, Massachusetts and married to Luman Archie Drowne, signed a page in Elizabeth's album at North Hampton, New Hampshire, on December 19, 1908.

Elizabeth's mother, Ida May (Cammett) Cousens Clark had two daughters with her first husband John Otis Cousens, son of Bradford and Ruth C. (Ricker) Cousens.  They were Octavia Hill Cousens, born 31 October 1882 at Biddeford, Maine, and Ruth Belle Cousens, born 21 November 1885 at Biddeford, Maine.

Octavia signed a page in Elizabeth's album at North Hampton, New Hampshire, on July 25, 1904.

Ruth Belle (Cousens) Goodwin, by then married to Daniel G. Goodwin and living at San Francisco, signed a page at North Hampton, New Hampshire, on December 18, 1908.

I lost track of Elizabeth M. Clark after the 1910 Census of North Hampton, New Hampshire.  She may have been the Elizabeth M. Clark who married Henry Tasker.

1880s Autograph Album of Lizzie A. Hanson of Gonic, Rochester, New Hampshire with later entries of her children with Roscoe L. Hart

1880s autograph album that appears to have belonged to Elizabeth A. (Hanson) Hart, "Lizzie", of Gonic, New Hampshire, which appears to have been compiled both before and after her marriage to Roscoe L. Hart, and includes a few later entries from each of her three children.  Gonic is a neighborhood in the City of Rochester, New Hampshire.

The album is missing a few pages at the front; accordingly, there's no ownership page or title page.  But the fact that the three Hart children signed pages near the end of the album and the fact that signer Sadie L. Hanson of Rochester, New Hampshire, indicated she was Lizzie's cousin all point toward Lizzie as the album owner.

I'm wondering if there was a school or mill at Gonic, New Hampshire, or Rochester, that drew women to attend or work there, as several women from Maine signed pages at Gonic.  These include:
  1. A. Belle Murdock of Buckfield, Maine, signed on June 10, 1883
  2. Rilla J. Paige of North Waterford, Maine, signed on December 26, 1882
  3. Villa Estes of Springfield, Maine, signed on "6-3-1883"
  4. Clara M. Marshall of Bangor, Maine, signed on June 10, 1883
  5. Hannah R. Farrington of Andover, Maine, signed on June 3, 1883
From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Elizabeth A. Hanson, "Lizzie", was born about June 1865 at Dover, New Hampshire, the daughter of John W. and Martha A. (Bickford) Hanson.

There's a page in the album signed by M. A. Bickford of Rochester, New Hampshire, on June 10, 1883, and it's tempting to think that the signer might have been Lizzie's mother, Martha A. (Bickford) Hanson.

The only signer who expressed a relationship with Lizzie was the aforementioned Sadie L. Hanson of Rochester, New Hampshire, who signed her page on June 10, 1883.

There were other signers named Hanson and Bickford; refer to the list below.

On 30 June, 1884, Lizzie married Roscoe L. Hart, son of Daniel and Ella Vienna (Ricker) Hart.  I'm not sure of Roscoe's mother's given name as it appears in several forms on records.  And there's an equal number of varying middle initials for Daniel.  Roscoe was born 29 October 1861 at Milton, New Hampshire.

Roscoe and Lizzie would have three children, two sons and a daughter.  Daughter Ellen Louise Hart of Gonic, New Hampshire, was the first of the siblings, in page order, to sign a page, when she was eight years old, presumably about 1905.  Ellen Louise Hart was born 7 June 1897 at Gonic, New Hampshire.

Next in page order was son Walter Hart, who signed his page on June 19, 1895 at Somersworth, New Hampshire, and was likely the Walter E. Hart who signed a page near the end of the album, with the address 8 Ackerson Street, Dover, New Hampshire.  He was Walter Ernest Hart, born 3 September 1887 at Rochester, New Hampshire.

In between the two pages signed by Walter was a page signed by son Nelson Hart of Rochester, New Hampshire, who signed the page twice, once on August 19, 1903 and again on February 25, 1906.  He was Nelson Roscoe Hart, born 27 July 1890 at Gonic, New Hampshire.

Lizzie's husband Roscoe L. Hart died in 1903.  Lizzie lived at least through the enumeration of the 1930 Census of Rochester, New Hampshire, and had not remarried.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

List of signers:  [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]
  • Very faint, but might be Lillie H. Rust of Moultonborough [if Moultonborough, is correct, then it would be New Hampshire], but I'm not sure of any of those components.  Surname could be Hurst [there's another signer by that name] or Hart [signers by that name].  I believe the page was signed in 1885.
B

  • Ethel F. Bickford of Somersworth, New Hampshire, signed on September 16, 1895.  Presumably Ethel Florence Bickford, born 26 February 1876 at Somersworth, New Hampshire, daughter of Jonathan and Fannie (Tibbets) Bickford.
  • Zana H. Bickford of Somersworth, New Hampshire, signed on September 5, 1895.  Presumably Zana Harriet Bickford, born 4 September 1885 at Somersworth, New Hampshire, daughter of Jonathan and Fannie (Tibbets) Bickford and sister of signer Ethel Florence Bickford

  • Sadie L. Hanson of Rochester, New Hampshire, signed on June 10, 1883; Lizzie's cousin.  Middle initial might be S but it looks different from the S in Sadie.

  • Walter E. Hart of #8 Ackerson Street, Dover, New Hampshire, presumably the Walter who signed another page in the album, son of Roscoe and Elizabeth (Hanson) Hart.
  • James M. Hayes of Dover, New Hampshire, signed on October 22, 1883
  • C. Hurst, signed at Gonic, New Hampshire, on January 14, 1883.  Middle initial might be M.

1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Emma Georgia Gilmore of Boston, Massachusetts

1870s/1880s autograph album of Emma Georgia Gilmore of Boston, Massachusetts.

Emma wrote her name on several pages, including the first end paper on which she wrote her name and pasted part of her calling card and and the back end paper, in which she inserted another calling card and wrote her address, 109 Dartmouth Street, Boston.

From what I could gather online, that section of Dartmouth Street appears to have been razed of residential buildings at one time and is now the site of large commercial buildings.

Emma added notes to many pages to reflect marriages and deaths of the signers, including her own marriage.  I found some of her notes in conflict with Massachusetts Records so she may have been trying to recall from some point in the future.  There's one autograph in the album from 1910, that of her son, I believe.  Perhaps it's then that she wrote her notes and was relying on memory.

The album contains the names of many, if not all, of the graduates of the "Centennial Class" of 1876 at the Franklin School in Boston.  An additional group of signers in 1877 mentioned "Phoenix", which may have been the school at Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Many of these signers contributed to group pages and then signed individual pages as well.

Two examples of a group Franklin School page and a group Phoenix page.

Many pages were signed at Ballard's Retreat, which I believe was the Ballard's Retreat located in East Wakefield, New Hampshire, and at Camden, Maine.

Emma also included a paper that lists the people who attended her party.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the names of over 160 people, some of whom are duplicates, including Emma's relatives, future relatives, schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Emma Georgia Gilmore was born about March 1858 at Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Rufus Samuel Gilmore and Ellen Maria (Lord) Gilmore, who were born at Horton, Nova Scotia, and Boston, Massachusetts, respectively.

Although he didn't mention a relationship, I believe that the Arthur B. Gilmore who signed a page on October 27, 1878 at Boston, Massachusetts, was Emma's brother Arthur Burgess Gilmore.

On 29 November 1881 at Boston, Massachusetts, Emma Georgia Gilmore married Franklin Snow, Jr., son of Franklin and Anna Elizabeth (Armstrong) Snow.  Franklin, Jr., was born 20 December 1858 at Boston.  He signed a page in Emma's album, first on April 16, 1877 and then on October 31, 1878.  Note Emma's note of their marriage date in the lower right corner.

I believe the page below was signed by the Franklin Snow, who was the son of Franklin, Jr. and Emma Georgia (Gilmore) Snow.  He would have been Franklin III, I believe, but perhaps they settled on Jr.  This is the only page in the album beyond the era of the 1870s and early 1880s.

Franklin Snow, Jr., was a fish merchant.  Franklin, Emma and son Franklin were living at Andover, Massachusetts at the time of the enumeration of the 1910 Census.  Franklin died at Boston, Massachusetts, of tuberculosis, on 30 April 1914.  There's mention of an Emma G. Snow of Boston who received a brokerage appointment in 1914.

The 1920 Census of Washington, D.C. lists their son Franklin G. Snow, age 23, working in railway administration and living at a boarding house.  Also listed is a widowed Emma Snow, about ten years off in age, but that could be a mistake.  By then young Franklin was married to Ethel B. Bruner.  The 1925 Census of New York City lists Franklin and Ethel, but no Emma.

Young Franklin Snow became the transportation editor for the Christian Science Monitor; many of his articles are available online.

A few of the pages that stand out:

Callie Coburn of Boston, Massachusetts, signed a page on April 7, 1879 and included an illustration of a couple and Cupid.  Emma added a note that Callie married in 1894.

George A Wellington signed a page on February 16, 1879, drew a sketch and inserted a tintype, presumably of himself, in slits in the page.

W. M. Oakman signed a page on February 19, 1879 and sketched a scene of sailing vessels and rockbound shore that may have been an imagined scene from the play "Down by the Sea" that was performed in the area about that time.  Or perhaps he was sketching the home of a real John Gale.

Howard K. Burgess, who signed a page on April 8, 1875 and who may have been the H. K. Burgess who signed another page in an impossibly tiny hand, took great pains with his coiffure and fascinator on the page below.  He must have been a great wit!  Emma added a later note that he married.

Fred O. Conant of Cumberland, Maine, signed a page on July 30, 1876 and added his photograph.  Emma wrote later notes that he graduated from Bowdoin College and that he married.  Frederick Odell Conant became a noted merchant and businessman at Portland, Maine, and compiled a genealogy of the Conant Family.

In two cases Emma pasted a newspaper clipping instead of writing her note, one of which announced the March 28, 1876 death of signer Thomas Campbell of Chelsea, Massachusetts, who had signed page in Emma's album on August 12, 1875.

The other instance was a happier one, the marriage announcement of signer Minnie A. Pearson of Boston, Massachusetts, who signed a page on January 24, 1877.  Minnie married Edwin J. Morrison on December 28, 1880.

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Eldora Evelyn Greenlaw, "Linnie", of Oceanville, Maine

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Linnie E. Greenlaw of Oceanville, Maine.  She was Eldora Evelyn Greenlaw, "Linnie", daughter of Thomas Augusta Greenlaw and Susan Arvilla (Hatch) Greenlaw.

See another post features an autograph album that Linnie kept in the earlier 1880s.

This diamond-shaped album measures approximately 5" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 45 of Linnie's relatives and friends.  Many of the signers hailed from Ipswich, Massachusetts or signed their pages at Ipswich, including people from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Eldora Evelyn Greenlaw, "Linnie", was born about 1869 on Deer Isle in Hancock County, Maine, the daughter of Thomas Augustus Greenlaw and Susan Arvilla (Hatch) Greenlaw, both Deer Isle natives.

Many of Linnie's family members signed pages in the earlier autograph album, but several signed pages in this one, too.

Linnie's mother, Susan Arvilla (Hatch) Greenlaw, signed a page at Oceanville, Maine, on June 19, 1890.

Linnie's father, Thomas Augustus Greenlaw, signed a page in 1891.

Linnie's sister Elsie M. Greenlaw signed a page "at home" on June 19, 1890.

I'm intrigued at the number of signers from the Maritimes.  Thomas was a mariner so it's tempting to think that he had contacts all over the Bay of Fundy and along the Atlantic shore from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia.  And likewise for the many signers from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, whose family also perhaps followed the sea, and who perhaps took advantage of opportunities to visit Massachusetts.

Belle Etter of Westmoreland, New Brunswick, signed a page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on April 11, 1890 [or 1891].

Winnie W. Hirtle of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, signed a page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on January 20, 1890.

On 10 September 1891, Linnie married George Loring Woodbury, son of George and Carolyn (Lakeman) Woodbury.  George signed a page in Linnie's album, but he didn't date the page, so we don't know whether he signed before or after their marriage.

George and Linnie settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, where they farmed and raised a family of at least two, son Carl and daughter Emma.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, information on any of the signers listed below or a theory as to what brought many of the signers to Ipswich, Massachusetts, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!
