1887-1900s Autograph Album of Jennie, with signers from Boston, Massachusetts, and Maine

Autograph album given to Jennie at Christmas in 1887 by Millie C. Morrill, who penned a presentation page and also signed another page at Boston, Massachusetts, on December 25, 1887.

The Christmas celebration in 1887 at which Jennie received the album apparently occurred at Boston, but several of the signers, who signed at other times, were from the Maine counties of Washington, Hancock and Waldo.

An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The album has a decoration of raised relief birds on red velvet, now faded.  It's approximately 8-1/4" x 5-1/2" with 30 pages inscribed to Jennie by her aunt Mrs. D. McCulloch and other people, some of whom may have been her relatives but did not specify a relationship, other than friend.

CDV of Emma Bullard of Sebec, Maine; married James McNabb of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1874

Carte de Visite of a young woman identified on the reverse as Emma Bullard McNabb.  

The photograph was taken by the Irving J. Gross & Co. studio at No. 140 Court Street, Boston, Massachusetts, and may have been taken before or after Emma Bullard's marriage in 1874 at Boston, to James McNabb, a native of Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

From online research, hopefully correct, and with gratitude for the help of a McNab family historian:  [corrections and additions welcome!]  

Mary Emma Bullard, the twin of Martha Ella Bullard, was born 12 July 1850 at Sebec, Maine, daughter of Jonathan and Nancy (Bradford) Bullard.

As late as the time of the enumeration of the 1870 Census, Emma was still in Maine, living with her family at Foxcroft, not far from Sebec.

By 1874, she had made her way to Boston, Massachusetts, where she married James McNabb on 12 November 1874.  James was born about 1848 in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, the son of James and Christy (Stewart) McNab or McNabb of McLellan's Mountain in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

A reader was kind enough to forward a photograph of the gravestones of James and Christy (Stewart) McNabb.

Below, the entrance to the Bridgeville Cemetery in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, where James and Christy McNabb are buried.

Young James McNabb and his wife Mary Emma (Bullard) McNabb were still living at Boston at the time of the 1880 Census.  By that time they had a son, Harry John  McNabb, born 3 December 1875.  James was working in the retail end of boots and shoes.  Whether he had his own shop by this time or not, I don't know, but I believe he eventually did.

James and Emma would have at least two more children.  Their son Lucius Bradford McNabb, born 7 May 1877 at Boston, died a year later on 19 June 1878.  Edith Emma McNabb was born 7 January 1886.  

Sadly, Mary Emma (Bullard) McNabb died 3 February 1888 at Boston, Massachusetts.  James and Edith were still living at Boston at the time of the 1900 Census but they subsequently moved to Somerville, Massachusetts.

Harry John McNab married Minnie Eliza Jones and had at least one child, named Emma, presumably for his mother.  Edith Emma McNabb lived a long life but I believe she never married.

1860s-1880s Autograph Album of Lydia A. Littlefield of Lynn, Massachusetts, born Wells, Maine

1860s-1880s autograph album of Lydia A. Littlefield of Lynn, Massachusetts.  The album was presented to Lydia on Christmas Day in 1868 by someone whose name appears to be Tinnie.

Later on in the album is a page signed by Tinnie A. Hackett of Lisbon Falls, Maine.

The album is journal sized, as most of the earlier albums were, and measures approximately 8" x 6-1/2".  It contains the sentiments, many of them full page in tiny handwriting, of nearly 140 of Lydia's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Lydia A. Littlefield was born 19 January 1848 at Wells, Maine, the daughter of Horace and Dorcas Burgess (Shorey) Littlefield, who were born at Wells, Maine, and Berwick, Maine, respectively.  Online trees have Lydia's middle name as Ann.

Lydia's brother William Bradford Littlefield and his wife Susan Alice (Getchell) signed facing pages at Lynn, Massachusetts, on different days in March of 1869.

I think the person who signed the page below at Wells, Maine, on November 16, 1870 and called herself Lydia's sister was Melissa J. Littlefield.

Many of the signers in Lydia's album were Wells, Maine, residents.

Lydia and her family were shown in the 1870 Census of Wells, Maine; by 1880 Lydia was boarding with the Moulton family of Lynn, Massachusetts, and working in a shoe factory.

On 21 January 1886 at Lynn, Massachusetts, Lydia married Frank McCullough, son, I think, of James and Elizabeth McCullough.  Frank was born about 1849 at Concord, New Hampshire.

Frank had earlier signed a page in Lydia's album, at Lynn, Massachusetts, on May 20, 1875, on a page shared with M. Frank Clarke of Lynn.

I don't know if the couple had any children.  Sadly, they both died fairly young, Lydia on 26 July 1891 at Lynn, Massachusetts, and Frank on 27 December 1892, also at Lynn.

CDV, possibly of Baroness Agnes (von Harlessem) Busse, wife of Rev. Wilhelm Busse of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of New York City

Carte de visite of a lovely mother and child, taken by the studio of Fr. Zirkler, Clausthal i Harz, with interesting text in German on the reverse.

Thanks to the help of people far and wide, I've learned that the text translates in English to something like "In Memory of Frau Pastor, Agnes Busse, born von Harlessem, 416 W. 43rd Str., New York."

One collaborator found an article in the New York Times issue of September 4, 1888, detailing the marriage of Agnes von Harlessem to widower Rev. George Frederic Wilhelm Busse, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 42 Second Street, New York, New York.  Agnes, described as beautiful and charming, was a German baroness, daughter of Rudolph Harlessem, and of one of the oldest families of Hanover, Germany.  

Most records show that Pastor Busse went mainly by William or Wilhelm.  The St. Luke's Lutheran Church website indicates that Rev. William Busse was called to the ministry of that church from Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1874.

Another collaborator found a birth record for Clara Gertrude M. E. C. Busse, born 3 August 1894 at Manhattan, daughter of Wilhelm and Agnes (von Harlessem) Busse.   Perhaps the child in her mother's arms is Clara, and the photograph was taken while on a trip back to Germany, as a New York Passenger list record shows that Agnes and her children returned to New York on 3 October 1895 after sailing from Bremen, German.

I found a birth record for a son [?] named Agnes von Harlessem Busse, born 5 August 1891.  And I found a New York City death record for an Agnes Busse on 13 January 1893, but that child was 6 months old, unless the age was written or indexed in error. If this is the same child, it's possible that mother Agnes also took her [?] to Germany to meet relatives, and the child died at some point after their return.  So it's possible that the child in the photograph is daughter Agnes.

A history of St. Luke's Lutheran Church has several paragraphs about the death of Rev. Busse.  He died 12 November 1899 and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, where it's mentioned that his mother, first wife and four children "had previously been laid to rest."  How sad.

The 1900 Census of New York shows widowed Agnes with children Griso, age 10, born about May 1890; Rudolph, age 8, born about May 1892, and Clara, then 5, born May 1895, though we know from the birth record that Clara's birth date was May 1894.  The child in the photograph could also be Griso or Rudolph.

Hopefully a reader has further information on the Busse and von Harlessem families that sheds light on the photograph, especially if the mother and child in the photograph are not Agnes and her child but rather are relatives or friends.

Another mystery: how did this CDV find its way to Maine?

Post 1917 Photograph of Pvt. Manuel Pacheco at the Post Commissary at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York

Candid photograph of Private Manuel Pacheco and his canine and equine pals at Mitchel Field, a former air base at Hempstead, Long Island, New York.  

The complex at Hempstead Plains that had been used for military training since the time of the Revolution was renamed Mitchel Field in honor of New York City mayor John Purroy Mitchel, who was killed during air training in Louisiana in 1917.

I found multiple men of a plausible age by the name of Manuel Pacheco, including several in Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Candid photograph of a woman identified on the reverse as Ulla Lemaine Gould.  She was Ulla Lemaine (Waite) Gould of Buckfield, Maine, who married Ernest Everett Gould of Freeport, Maine.

The identification is written in pencil against a dark background and does not show up in the image of the reverse, below.

Ulla Lemaine Waite was born 19 November 1871 at Buckfield, Maine, the daughter of Osgood Eugene Waite and Esther Jane (Warren) Waite.

On 28 March 1892 at Auburn, Maine, Ulla married Ernest Everett Gould, son of John Jacob Gould and Georgianna "Anna" (Winslow) Gould.  He was born 25 June 1869 at Freeport, Maine.

Ulla and Ernest made their home at Freeport, Maine, and had, I believe, 11 children, not all of whom survived infancy.

I believe that the man in the photograph was Malcolm Pearson Cushing, who was born at Freeport, Maine, on 20 November 1883, the son of Moses Harris Cushing and Penelope A. (True) Cushing.

On 9 August 1910 at Freeport, Maine, Malcolm married Edith May Estes, widow of Silas Wellington Estes, and daughter of Abner D. Bryant and Lydia A. (Thorne) Bryant of Greenwood, Maine.  Edith was born 12 March 1884.

Malcolm and Edith had at least two children, a daughter and a son.  Malcolm worked as a "cutter", perhaps in a shoe shop.  He died in 1868 at Freeport, Maine.
