Charles Ham Abbott (1890-1982)

Collection of 65 photographs of mostly identified students and administrators at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine; Aroostook State Normal School and Presque Isle High School, both in Presque Isle, Maine.  

Presumably collected by Charles Ham Abbott (1890 ME -1982 ME) and, perhaps, his future wife Lillian Katherine Hopkins (1887-1955).

Some of the people shown in the collection graduated from one or more of the following - with a few from close years.  

• Presque Isle High School in 1907
• Aroostook State Normal School in 1909
• Bates College, Class of 1912 - many of the photographs are different from the ones used in the yearbook

Accompanying the photographs is the Class Day program for the Bates College Class of 1912.  Two of the photographs depict class reunions for the Bates Class of 1912: the 25th and the 35th.

The collector of the photographs appears to have been Charles Ham Abbott (1890 ME -1982 ME), a native of Foxcroft, Maine, whose name appears on the bottom edge of many of the photographs.  He was the son of Dr. Arthur Frye Abbott (1865-1948) and Emma Blanchard (Ham) Abbott (1867-1892).

Charles graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1907 and Bates College in 1912.  He may have attended Aroostook State Normal School in between, or the some of the photographs may have been collected by his wife, Lillian Katherine Hopkins (1887-1955), who was an Aroostook State Normal School graduate.

Charles and Lillian would move to Rhode Island where Charles had a long career in education.  

Note: Charles was not the only Presque Isle High School graduate in 1907 to move on to Bates College.  

Charles' FindaGrave memorial shows a death year of 1930, but he actually had another 52 years to be a meaningful presence in his community.

Small photograph album, approximately 6" by 5" by 2", with 25 CDVs and 2 tintypes associated, presumably, with the family of Arathusa (Newman) Hall Rodbird (1835-1922) of Dryden, Maine, a village in the town of Wilton, Maine.

Sadly, the only two identified photographs are those of Arathusa herself and her second husband William Welcome Rodbird (1822-1903), both buried in the East Wilton Cemetery, Wilton, Maine.

The "Lauriston" mentioned on the page containing Arathusa's CDV is her grandson Dr. Lauriston Ellis Orr (1892-1939).

The photographs may depict members of the Newman, Hall and Rodbird families. Arathusa had several children with her first husband, Augustus Jason Hall (1820-1883). They were married from 1846 to about 1870, when they divorced. 

Children:

1. Ada Elizabeth Hall (1859-1892); married Ulrich Reed (1849-aft 1930); at least four children
2. Carrie Newman Hall (1865-1915); married Ellis D. Orr; mother of Dr. Lauriston Ellis Orr (1892-1939), mentioned above
3. Newman Hall (1867-1949); had at least three children

In 1876, Arathusa married William Welcome Rodbird (1822-1903) and had at least one more child, Mira E. Rodbird, who died young but may appear in the album.

Some people may be depicted more than once, perhaps at a different stage of life. Some may be Arathusa's siblings or in-laws. Facing photographs may hold clues as to husband and wife, mother and child, or siblings.

1850 letter from M. M. Robinson of Waterford, Maine, a student at Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine, to cousin.

The letter writer was possibly Moses Mason Robinson (1835-1895) of Waterford, Maine, who would serve as a Captain in the 12th Maine Infantry in the Civil War and later as an attorney in New York State.

The Maine Historical Society in Portland, holds a collection of Moses Mason Robinson Civil War papers.

Moses Mason Robinson was born in Bethel, Maine, in 1835, the son of O'Neill Watson Robinson (1797-1867) and Betsey Hilton (Straw) Robinson (1797-1878). Moses married Susan Edwards Booth (1843-1916) in 1877 at Ballston Spa, New York.

Waterford, Dec 9th 1850

Dear Cousin

I have neglected to write before now for the reason that your letter had arrived at Waterford some two or three days before I did and besides I had griends from Bridgton who have been here almost all of the week and so I have delayed writing until now. As to my whereabouts for hte last nine months I have kept myself at "North Bridgton Academy" and I think I may safely say best school in the little State of Maine. Now I will tell you how I progress. I have read Cicero once and Salerst and also have been thiteen sections in Smyth's Algebra. At the close of the term we had a glorious exhibition "my honor" was called upon to speak the salutory address which was

delivered in Latin and the whole went off "Brown". We have a grand school and one of the best teachers in the United States. I should be very happy to see you at Bridgton next Spring as I probably shall attend school; there. Joseph Clark, Jr. (1818-1883) was the son of Joseph Clark (1785-1870) and Sarah (Hunt) Clark (1789-1862), "Sally".  Joseph, Jr., married Esther B. Moore (1820-1910) in 1841.  Their hotel stayed in the family for several generations, until about 1988.

Caratunk, Maine, today, is known for its several Kennebec River rafting companies and for being the east side of a canoe crossing for Appalachian Trail hikers.

1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Georgiana, possibly Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944) of Canton, Maine

1870s/1880s autograph album that belonged to a Georgianna, also known as Georgia and "Georgie", who presumably lived in the area of Canton, Maine, and North Livermore, Maine, where many of the inscribers lived.

The album measures approximately 5+" by 4" and contains the sentiments of 78 well wishers.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.  

The only inscriber who called herself a relative was cousin Annie Elizabeth Richardson (1852-unk), who would marry Marshall Lee Gray.

The owner may have been Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944), raised in the Canton, Maine, household of  Benjamin Lothrop and Abigail (Whitney) Lothrop, variously described as her parents or her grandparents, but more likely the latter. 

If, after reading the alphabetical list of inscribers at the end of this post, you feel that someone other than Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944) was the album owner, please leave a comment so that this post can be amended.

A well-sourced, online biography of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes points to the strong possibility that the Lothrops' daughter, Dianthia Simmons Lothrop (1840-1935), or one of her sisters, was Georgiana's mother.

In her inscription below, Dianthia spells Georgiana's name as Georgianna, which may have been the correct spelling.

Georgiana married Caleb Osaman Jones (1852-1931) about 1878. Theirs proved to be a rocky marriage, and by 1884 they were divorced. Georgiana moved to Waltham, Massachusetts and, a few months later in 1884, married William I. Scholes (1859-1938).  The couple lived in Massachusetts, but eventually moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. William died in 1938 and Georgia, of cerebral thrombosis, in 1944.

Interestingly, Dianthia Simmons Lothrop (1840-1935) lived with them in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and was a close figure throughout Georgiana's life.
