1870s Autograph Album with Inscriptions from Students at Wabash University at Crawfordsville, Indiana

Autograph album with inscriptions from the 1870s, mostly, but not all, from students at Wabash University at Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Most, if not all, of the students appear to have been members of Beta Theta Pi, as shown in the inscription by George Cyrus Taber, a member of the Class of 1874, who would become a lawyer at Logansport, Indiana.

The first page present in the album is the title page; any front end papers are missing, including one that might have contained the owner's name.  He was most likely a student and thus a male, as the college has always been a males-only institution.

There are a few inscriptions by women in 1877, while most of the inscriptions were penned earlier by members of the Classes of 1870-75.

I found information on students at Wabash University in several sources, two of them:

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Mary Frances Gallagher of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania

1880s-1890s autograph album that presumably belonged to Mary Frances Gallagher [or Mary Francis Gallagher] of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, possibly at Bryan or Rural Valley.

Most of the inscribers gave addresses in and around Armstrong County, Pennsylvania:
  • Blanket Hill
  • Bryan
  • Dayton
  • Echo
  • Freeport
  • Goheenville
  • Muff
  • Phoenix
  • Rural Valley,

The album presumably had covers at one point, and perhaps more pages, including a possible ownership page inscribed by Mary herself.  However, there are two inscriptions, one by a Mary Gallagher of Bryan, Pennsylvania, and one by Mary Gallaher of Bryan, Pennsylvania, that might have been penned by Mary Frances Gallagher herself.  One of them appears on the page after an inscription by Mary's sister Hannah [shown in the family history section farther below]

The album, or what's left of it, measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4" and contains the sentiments of around 45 of Mary's relatives, friends, schoolmates and pastors.   An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to information provided by her husband, Charles Addison Carson, on her 1918 death certificate, Mary Frances [ or Francis] Gallagher was born September 25, 1867 at Dayton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Irish immigrants James Gallagher and Rebecca (Williamson) Gallagher.

Mary had several siblings, one of whom, older sister Hannah (Gallagher) McGregor, wife of William McGregor, inscribed a page in the album.

One of the last inscriptions in the album was that of Mary's niece Becca McGregor, who was Rebecca McGregor, daughter of Hannah (Gallagher) McGregor and William McGregor.

Another niece who inscribed a page was Laura Brice, daughter of Mary's older sister Isabella (Gallagher) Brice, "Belle" or "Bella", and James Brice.

On June 17, 1896 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Mary Frances Gallagher married Charles Addison Carson, son of Andrew and Catherine Carson.  They settled at Kittanning, Pennsylvania, where Charles was the Sheriff.  I'm not sure if they had any children before Mary died on June 3, 1918 at Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Mary and Charles, who died in 1942, are buried in the St. Michaels Episcopal Cemetery at Rural Valley, Pennsylvania, with other relatives.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

I haven't found a birth record but marriage and death records indicate that Isabel/Isabell/Isabelle/Isabella Hill Ackerman, "Belle", was born October 28, 1877 at Madison, Georgia, the daughter of Abram Kennedy Ackerman and his first wife Lydia Kennedy (Robertson) Ackerman.  Lydia died in 1893, and Abram subsequently married Emma Theobald in Ohio in 1896.

The "Papa" and "Father" who inscribed pages in Belle's album were perhaps her paternal grandfather, Andrew Jackson Ackerman, and her father, Abram Kennedy Ackerman, unless Abram inscribed the pages using both terms.  Belle's paternal grandfather, John Dennis Morris Robertson, had died in 1882.

Belle married twice:
  1. Glenn McBride, who died in 1904, with whom she had one child
  2. George Lewis Breitenbucher, with whom she had two children
Belle died in 1960 and is buried with her second husband in Crest Lawn Memorial Park at Atlanta, Georgia.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1890s Autograph Album of Emma Frances Tucker of Bentley, Illinois

1890s autograph album of Emma Tucker of Bentley, Illinois, which many inscribers spelled as Bently.  The inscriptions range from Illinois to Indiana, Kansas, Missouri.  To have acquired inscriptions from such a wide area, Emma might have participated in religious retreats.

The album, which measures about 7-3/4" by 4-3/4", is in rough shape and may be missing covers, if it ever had them.  Many pages are disbound, and there might be missing pages, including a page where Emma might have inscribed her name.

Fortunately, there are clues to Emma's identity:
  • most inscriptions centered around Bentley, Illinois
  • several people directed their inscriptions to "Emma Tucker"
  • several of Emma's sisters inscribed pages - though I suspect that some of the inscribers who called Emma sister were in-laws or religious acquaintances.
An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Emma Frances Tucker was born in 1872 in Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Tucker and Martha Eve (Preston) Tucker.  Sisters  who inscribed pages in the album and whose names I could discern were Cora Belle Tucker, Tamer Tucker and Martha H. Tucker.  Another name was difficult to interpret.

Belle, "your Sister"; inscribed at Bently, Illinois, on March 25, 1888.  Emma's older sister Cora Belle Tucker

? Tucker, Emma's sister; inscribed at Bently, Illinois, on March 25, 1888; on a page that faces a page inscribed by Emma's sister Cora Belle Tucker

M. H. Tucker; inscribed on June 21, 1892.  Martha H. Tucker, Emma's older sister

Tamer, "your sister"; inscribed on August 21, 1887.  Presumably Emma's older sister Elizabeth Tamer Tucker
Several inscribers identified as cousins:
  • Ernest Hopkins, inscribed at Middle Creek, on August 22, 1887.  Emma's cousin.  Ernest E. Hopkins.  The Addie who inscribed the right facing page may have been Ernest's wife Minerva Adeline (Kimbrough) Hopkins.
  • T. N. Kimbrough; inscribed at Montezuma, Kansas, on October 8, 1888.  Emma's cousin
  • Sarah M. T. Preston; inscribed on July 14, 1889.  Emma's cousin.  Presumably Mary Sarah Tamer Preston, daughter of William Johnston Preston, who was a brother to Emma's mother Martha Eve (Preston) Tucker
  • W. J. Thompson; inscribed at Bently, Illinois, on July 21, 1888.  Emma's cousin
On January 4, 1893 in Hancock County, Illinois, Emma Frances Tucker married Wilborn Owen Mecum.  Wilborn was born in Illinois in 1865, son of James Madison Mecum and Verlinna (Dorsett) Mecum.  Emma and Wilburn farmed in Illinois and had, I think, four children.
