1870s/1890s+ Autograph Album of David W. Evans of the Utica, New York, area.

1870s/1880s+ autograph album of David W. Evans of the Utica, New York area.  The album was presented to him by a friend at Christmas in 1876.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 89 of David's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

At least some of the signers had an affiliation with what was at the time called the New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica, New York.  It's now called the Utica Psychiatric Center.

Theodore Deecke was a pathologist there.  He and his wife Clara signed pages in November 1877.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

David W. Evans was born 7 July 1842 in New York, near Constableville, the son of Owen O. Evans and Jennett (Jones) Evans.  His family was Welsh.

About 1887, David married Jennie Morris, daughter of William R. and Eliza Morris.  I believe Jennie was a supervisor at the Asylum.  She is presumably the Jennie Morris who signed a page in David's album on April 3, 1881.

David and Jennie had at least two children, Frank Merritt Evans and Elizabeth J. Evans.  Each signed a page in David's album, Elizabeth twice.  Elizabeth signed pages on November 6, 1898 and February 19, 1900.  Frank signed his page on November 6, 1898.  In page order:

David W. Evans was a wagonmaker.  He died at a relatively young age on July 19, 1900.  Here is an obituary from Saturday Globe, thanks to the great work from FultonHistory.com:

1860s Autograph Album Presented by Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry of Sing Sing, New York, to future wife Abbie Jane Haight

1860s autograph album presented to Abbie Jane Haight by her future husband Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry of Sing Sing, New York.  They married on 12 April 1863.

Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry signed a page in the album, at Sing Sing, New York, on November 27, 1862, which may have been the date he presented the album to Abbie.

Some of the autographs in the album were collected after the couples' marriage.

See another post featuring an album from Sing Sing, New York here.

The album measures approximately 7" x 5-1/2" and contains nearly 20 pages signed by Abbie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the senders appears at the end of this post.

The album contains three pages of engravings, in addition to the title page, below.  The album was published in New York by Leavitt and Allen.

Two greeting cards are tucked inside the album, and one is pasted to the back end paper.  One of the loose greeting cards was given to Ida Lounsberry by her father Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Abbie Jane Haight was born 16 August 1846, the daughter of James E. Haight of Yorktown, New York, according to a biography of her husband, Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry, written after his death and included in the Biographical History of Westchester County.

The 1850 Census of Yorktown has Abbie in the household of Richard and Sarah Tompkins.  Whether James E. Haight had died and his widow, possibly named Sarah, had remarried Richard Tompkins, or if Abbie was being brought up by other people entirely, I don't know.

Abbie's cousin Edna signed a page at Sing Sing, New York, on May 3, 1863.

As mentioned above, on 12 April 1863, Abbie Jane Haight married Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry, son of Henry and Catherine R. (Quereau) Lounsberry.  Catherine's mother was Charity (Rhodes) Quereau.  Isaac was born about 1832 at Croton, New York.

The couple had, I believe, 5 children:

  1. Sarah Lounsberry, born about 1864; married Nelson Laraway
  2. Catherine Lounsberry, born about 1866
  3. Ida Lounsberry, born about 1868; married Henry Palmer
  4. Jane C., "Jennie", born about 1870
  5. Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry, born 18 March 1877; m. Florence Irene Walker.
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Mrs. Anna Terwilliger signed a page on July 16, 1862.  She may have been the same Anna Terwilliger who signed a page at Sing Sing in July of 1862, or a daughter.

One page was signed by two people who added some frills to their signatures, making them hard to read.  One person was Dorcas U. Knox, and the other Sarah M. Hunt or Hurd or Hurst or ?

List of signers:  [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

1880s Autograph Album with Signers from Sing Sing, New York, and Cold Spring, New York

1880s autograph album that contains 11 pages signed by people from, or at, Sing Sing, New York, and Cold Spring, New York.  There's no clue as to the owner.

The album was found with an earlier one that was presented to Miss Abbie J. Haight by her future husband, Isaac Rhodes Lounsberry, but I don't know if there was an actual connection between the albums or if they found their way together later on.

The album is a large one, about 8-1/2" x 7", with only eleven signed pages.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The first page was signed by someone whose initials are hard to decipher, but possibly H. E. Scripture, signed at Sing Sing, New York, on April 30, 1883.  There was a Harry E. Scripture in the area during that time frame.

Brothers Wilbur J. Chadeayne and Jacob Chadeayne of Sing Sing, New York, also signed pages on April 30, 1883.

Annie C. Post signed her page at Sing Sing, New York, on June 28, 1881.

B. W. T. Amsden signed a page at Sing Sing, New York, on "5/1/83".  He may have been Benjamin W. T. Amsden.

The name of the signer below is hard to read; it's possibly W. W. Washburne, who signed on May 1, 1883.

James A. Hart of Sing Sing, New York, signed a page on May 1, 1883.

Minnie Terhune of Sing Sing, New York, signed a page on May 1, 1883.

Purdy A. Auser of Sing Sing, New York, signed a page on May 1, 1883.  He was likely Purdy Anderson Auser II.

Frances A. Ryer of Cold Spring, New York, signed a page on May 1, 1883.  She would later marry William Terhune and live at Sing Sing, New York.

R. Terhune of Sing Sing, New York, signed a page on May 1, 1883.

Surnames in the Album:
Amsden
Auser
Chadeayne
Hart Post
Ryer
Scripture
Terhune
Washburne or Washburn

Alphabetical list of th signers:  [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • B. W. T. Amsden, signed at Sing Sing, New York, on "5/1/83".  Presumably Benjamin W. T. Amsden, but not the noted gunsmith of Saratoga, who died in 1882; perhaps a nephew
  • Purdy A. Auser of Sing Sing, New York, signed on May 1, 1883.  Purdy Anderson Auser was born 6 October 1863, son of Purdy Anderson Auser and Eliza (Madan) Auser.

  • Jacob Chadeayne of Sing Sing, New York, signed on April 30, 1883

  • Annie C. Post, signed at Sing Sing, New York, on June 28, 1881
  • Frances A. Ryer of Cold Spring, New York, signed on May 1, 1883; "73", perhaps referring to the Class of 1873.  She married William Terhune in June 1885 at Peekskill, New York; they then settled at Sing Sing, New York.
  • H. E. Scripture, signed at Sing Sing, New York, on April 30, 1883.  If the initials are H. E., he could have been Harry E. Scripture.  However, initials could be A. E.

1880s Autograph Album of Leominster, Massachusetts Signers, possibly owned by Emily A. Burgess

1880s autograph album that contains pages signed by people from the Leominster, Massachusetts, area.

It may have belonged to Emily A. Burgess, who was the first signer in the album, with another page in the album inscribed to an Emily.  The Emily A. Burgess of Leominster, Massachusetts, who signed her page on August 29, 1884, was 17 years old at the time, according to a note in the upper left corner.

Katie E. Rugg of Leominster was the only person in the album to name the album's owner, at least by her first name.  Katie signed her page on March 4, 1885.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 46 people and several illustrations interspersed throughout.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

On 22 June 1891 at Leominster, Massachusetts, Emily married Frederick Elmer Walden, son of George Hixon Walden and Mary Ann (McLaughlin) Walden.

1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Birdie Deane of Taunton, Massachusetts; Bristol Academy Students

1870s/1880s autograph album of Birdie Deane of Taunton, Massachusetts, started in 1876 and containing pages signed by many students at Bristol Academy.

The album is missing its covers and perhaps end papers, but luckily Birdie wrote her name on the title page, as you can see above.  The album interior measures approximately 8" x 4-1/2" and contains pages signed by 61 of Birdie's schoolmates, friends and, possibly, relatives.

I didn't find immediate information on a Birdie Deane of Taunton, Massachusetts; if you have information on her, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

There were three people named Deane or Dean who signed pages in the album.  One was Gertie W. Deane of Taunton, Massachusetts, who signed her page on February 5, 1879.

Florence Dean of Taunton, Massachusetts, signed a page on October 19, 1876.

L. A. Dean of Taunton, Massachusetts, signed a page on February 8, 1877.

At least two pages were signed by people of note, one of them being Cornelius Gilbert Atwood, a Civil War Brigadier General with the Massachusetts Militia and, later, Deputy Collector of the Port of Boston, Secretary of the Board of Trade and Inspector General.  He signed at Boston, Massachusetts, on January 27, 1877.

Another signer was O. J. Curtis, also of the Boston Board of Trade, who signed on March 3, 1877.  He was Oliver J. Curtis.

Several people wrote pages in French and may have been instructors at Bristol Academy.  Mathilde de Lewandosky signed at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 21 September 1879.

Helena S. de Lewandoska also signed a page at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 21 September 1879.

I'm not sure of the surname of the person who signed the page in French below, perhaps Marie Maggi or Maygi, or Marie ?, who signed 11 October 1877.

List of signers:  [Note:  given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • Angilina Mathie, or Angelina Mathie; not sure of surname.
  • Can't decipher the name, signed on December 20, 1876, but could be William Willard
  • Seth Turner; signed at Randolph, Massachusetts, on January 27, 1877; not sure of either name but there was a Seth Turner at Randolph during that time frame.
  • Written in French, possibly a French teacher at Bristol Academy at Taunton, Massachusetts: Marie Maggi, signed 11 October 1877; not sure of surname
