19th century photograph of eight people gathered at Marblehead, Massachusetts.  Six of them are identified on the reverse, perhaps in the handwriting of each.

The identifications:

• F. W. Sanborn
• L. H. Sanborn
• A. M. B. Little
• E. M. Lander
• A. K. Prentiss, Marblehead
• Anna L. Coffin

Based on the identifications, I think this may have been a group involved with the First Church of Newbury, Massachusetts, or the American Home Missionary Society.

F. W. and L. H. Sanborn may have been Rev. Francis Wood Sanborn (1852-1902) and wife Elizabeth H. (Bateman) Sanborn (1851-1920), presumably "Lizzie".  Rev. Sanborn was pastor of the First Church of Newbury, Massachusetts from about 1892 to about 1896, which was the likely time frame of the photograph.

A. M. B. Little may have been Adeline M. B. Little, born 22 July 1845 at Everett, Massachusetts, daughter of George Little and Maria Jane (Brockway) Little.  I found her name in a 1900 issue of the American Home Missionary, when she was living at Newbury, Massachusetts.

E. M. Lander may have been Emma M. Lander, born about 1850 in Massachusetts, daughter of Henry A. Lander and Anna P. (Clark) Lander.  Her family lived at Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Emma married Charles H. Andrews at Newburyport, Massachusetts, on 11 September 1906. 

A. K. Prentiss of Marblehead may have been Amy K. Prentiss, born about 15 March 1837, daughter of Caleb Prentiss and Hannah (Lecraw) Prentiss of Marblehead, Massachusetts.  Amy died 27 March 1918.

Anna L. Coffin may have been the teacher Anna Lapsley Coffin, who was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 17 July 1838, daughter of Joshua Coffin and Anna (Wiley) Coffin, who were born at Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, respectively.  Anna Lapsley Coffin died 25 March 1907 at Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Some of Anna's papers are included in the Chase Collection, archived at the University of Florida.

Vintage Winter Snapshot of George Leroy Smith, Jr., at age 13 Months

Photograph of a child bundled up against the winter cold, identified on the reverse as George Leroy Smith, Jr., at age 13 months.

There was a George Leroy Smith, Jr., born 14 April 1902 at Lawrence, Massachusetts, son of George L. and Mary M. (Groesbeck) Smith of Lawrence, Massachusetts, but I have no way of knowing if this was he.   And there are a lot of possibilities nation-wide.

Photograph of Bessie Lynde Eaton of Malden, Massachusetts, 1892 graduate of Lasell Seminary

Photograph of a young woman identified on the reverse as "Bessie L. Eaton, Lasell '92".   

The photograph had to have been taken in the Fall of 1891 or in 1892, as Bessie's name appears in an article entitled "New Students" in an October 1891 issue of "Lasell Leaves".

Then known as Lasell Seminary for Young Women, Lasell College is now a four year, coed college.  It's located in the Auburndale section of Newton, Massachusetts.

Bessie Lynde Eaton was born 29 April 1875 at Melrose, Massachusetts, the daughter of James Lynde Eaton and Grace Fletcher (Choate) Eaton, who were born at Malden, Massachusetts, and Beverly, Massachusetts, respectively.

By the time of the 1900 Census of Malden, Massachusetts, Bessie was living with her parents.  There was no occupation listed for her.  Her father was a grocer.  At some point in his life he became vice president of the S. S. Pierce Company.

The 1910 Census showed the Bessie and her parents still at Malden and her father still working as a grocer.  Again, no occupation was listed for Bessie.

Bessie's father died in 1919.  The 1920 Census showed Bessie and her mother still at Malden.  Neither had an occupation listed.

Bessie's father was a member of the Malden Historical Society.  The 1919-1920 Register of the Malden Historical Society contains a necrology of Charles Lynde Eaton.  It's interesting to this Mainer that he had a country estate at Belgrade Lakes, Maine.  The family home in Malden was at 44 Dexter Street.

As late as 1925, Bessie was still living with her mother, based on the Malden Massachusetts City Directory.  A 1932 Directory listed Grace but not Bessie.

1884-1901 autograph album of Lena May Mitchell of Lewiston, Maine.

See a post featuring another of Lena's autograph albums here. That one has pages signed by 49 people, as opposed to this one, which has only 5.

This album is approximately 7-1/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of five people, two of them Lena's sisters. 

The Mitchell family was involved with the Shiloh settlement, "The Kingdom", founded by Frank Sandford at Durham, Maine.  Information on The Kingdom and its members can be found here.

Grace E. Mitchell signed a page at Shiloh, Maine, on January 7, 1901.  Grace Elizabeth Mitchell would marry Shiloh resident Frank Gordon McKenzie, who was born at Maitland, Nova Scotia.

Sadie A. Mitchell signed a page at Shiloh, Maine.  Sarah Adelma Mitchell would later marry Shiloh resident, Ernest Howard Tupper, who was born at Oakland, Maine.

Effie C. Dascomb of Wilton, Maine, signed a page on August 30, 1884.

Carrie C. Weymouth of Sabatis, Maine [now Sabattus], signed a page on 4-6-84.

 Mrs. Emma Spofford signed a page.

Lena May Mitchell was born 16 February 1868 at Lewiston, Maine, daughter of Algernon Mansfield Mitchell and Sarah Maranda (Perley) Mitchell.  

On 26 March 1889 at Lewiston, Maine, Lena married Walter Elbridge Webster, son of Elbridge G. Webster and Henrietta Ardelia (Given) Webster.  Walter was born 11 January 1863 at Lewiston, Maine.

Lena and Walter lived at Wales, Maine, and raised four children.
Lena died at Wales, Maine, in 1919.

Carte de visite of a woman identified on the reverse as Mrs. Elisha Westcott; the photograph was taken by the Morton studio on Westminister Street, Providence, Rhode Island.

Although I found more than one Elisha Westcott in Rhode Island, I believe, based on the woman's age, that she was Sarah Miranda (Williams) Westcott, wife of Elisha Potter Westcott of Cranston, Rhode Island.

Sarah Miranda (Williams) Westcott was born 21 August 1843 at Newport, Rhode Island, the daughter of Turpin and Dorcas (Andrews) Williams.

On 6 June 1861 at Cranston, Rhode Island, Sarah Miranda Williams married widower Elisha Potter Westcott, son of Jonathan Potter Westcott and Salota (Fish or Fisk) Westcott.  Elisha was born 6 January 1833 at Cranston or Coventry, Rhode Island.  He had previously been married to Elizabeth (Briggs) Westcott.

Sarah and Elisha had at least two children:

1. Edwin Turpin Westcott, born 28 August 1863 at Cranston, Rhode Island
2. May Westcott, born 20 December 1873 at Cranston, Rhode Island

Sarah Miranda (Williams) Westcott died at Cranston, Rhode Island, in 1921.  Note: her death date on some online databases has 1921 transposed to 1912; view the photograph provided of her gravestone.

Marcia Allen Russel was born 31 December 1874 at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Henry Clay Russel and Urcilla (Kram) Russel, both Pottsville natives.

On 31 October 1901 at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Marcia Allen Russel married Charles Calvin Burgess, son of William and Louisa (Calvin) Burgess.  Charles was born at Bayonne, New Jersey, on 15 May 1873.

They lived at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised three children.  Charles, a graduate of Lehigh University, was a civil engineer.

Charles posed an idea in the 1944-45 Lehigh Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 32, No. 3, that alums should provide an update on their lives since graduation.  He offered to get the ball rolling with his own memoir.  Unfortunately, it's another case of OCR without proofreading, and has some illegible sections, but if you're interested in reading it in its entirety, you can probably find a physical copy.

Bartholomew Moore Parker (1878-1918) was born 5 July 1878 at Raleigh, North Carolina, son of Dr. Joseph Parker and Annie Maria (Moore) Parker.  They were born at Tarboro, North Carolina, and Raleigh, North Carolina, respectively.

On 10 August 1904 in Wake County, North Carolina, Bartholomew Moore Parker married Elizabeth Jiggetts Stamps, daughter of Edward Roe Stamps and Elizabeth Vines (Williams) Stamps.  They had at least three children:

• Annie M. Parker, born about 1906 in South Carolina
• Bettie S. Parker, born about 1907 in North Carolina
• Bartholomew Moore Parker, Jr., born 25 May 1909 in North Carolina.

Their mother Elizabeth died in 1910 when her youngest child was less than a year old.

On 10 November 1915, Bartholomew Moore Parker, Sr., married for a second time, to Margaret Augusta Faucett, daughter of Whitfield Anselone Faucett and Amelia Holmes (Taylor) Faucett.
They had at least one child, a son James Moore Parker.

Bartholomew Moore Parker, Sr., spent his life in the textile industry.  He became head of the Department of Carding and Spinning at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts at West Raleigh, North Carolina.

Like his first wife, Bartholomew Moore Parker, Sr., also died young, on 12 October 1918 at Raleigh, North Carolina.  The 1920 Census shows his widow, Margaret Augusta (Faucett) Parker with the four children.
