1880s-1910s Autograph Album of Annie M. Soule and daughter Gertrude L. Strout of Exeter, Maine

Autograph album that spanned two generations, first used by Annie M. Soule and later by her daughter Gertrude L. Strout, both of Exeter, Maine.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 37 autographs and seven color illustrations, some of which have detached.

Annie M. Soule was born 23 May 1866 at Etna, Maine, the daughter of William A. and Sarah J. (Call) Soule.  In 1895 Annie married Isaiah N. Strout, who was born 22 May 1844 at Bradford, Maine, son of Elisha Strout, Jr. and wife Margaret A. (Dudley) Strout.

Annie's mother, Sarah J. (Call) Soule signed a page for her in 1910:

Annie and Isaiah had at least two daughters, Gertrude, born 2 October 1896, and Jessie, born 2 July 1898, both in Exeter, Maine.

Some of the earlier autographs in the album:

Lester S. French, 1889

Rachel E. Stephenson of Bangor, Maine, 1889:

Ralph W. Pendexter of Lewiston, Maine, 1891:

Balfour Caine at Etna, Maine, 1892:

Walter Lawrence, who refers to the hours spent at Etna, Maine, 1892:

Annie's daughter Jessie Strout inscribed a page to her sister Gertrude in 1916, while Jessie was a student at Exeter High School.  Gertrude had likely graduated by then.

Many of the pages in the album are inscribed to Gertrude while she was a student at Exeter High School.

Effie B. Ames, Exeter, Maine, 1912:

Mildred Cleveland at Exeter High School, 1911:

Hazel B. Colbath at Exeter High School, 1910

Benjamin Eaton, Exeter High School, 1911:

1870s Autograph Album with Signers from Fryeburg Academy, Gorham Seminary, Bowdoin College, Maine

1870s autograph album filled with pages signed by students at Fryeburg Academy, Gorham Seminary and Bowdoin College, plus others.

The album, approximately 6-1/2" x 4-1/4" and thicker than most albums of these dimensions, contains 44 autographs of people throughout Maine, a few other states and Cuba.

The album isn't identified as to the owner, though I suspect he was a young man originally from the Fryeburg area who belonged to the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at Bowdoin College.

An authority on Maine history and genealogy feels that the album may have belonged to Edward E. Hastings (1857-1939) of Fryeburg, in part because his autograph does not appear in the album, though those of his hometown friends do.

Hastings attended Fryeburg Academy and Bowdoin College.  He returned to Fryeburg and joined the law practice established by his father.  The practice is still in existence today.

Another possible clue pointing to Hastings as the owner of the album is that his future wife also signed a page.  She signed as Jennie M. Warren of Fryeburg, though her name may have been Mary J. Warren.

Several of the Bowdoin signers indicated they were members of this fraternity, and the symbols appear on the inside back cover:

It's possible that a few pages at the front are missing, as there is no title page.  The first page in the album may be an autograph or it may be the owner's name, though I suspect it's an autograph.

The first page in the album, signed in 1874 by Orison W. Adams of Cornish, Maine:

J. Warren Achorn, member of Zeta Psi and Class of 1879 [at Bowdoin], signed at Brunswick, Maine - John Warren Achorn, who became a noted physician and naturalist: [image altered to show more distinctly]

Another signer of note was Arlo Bates of East Machias, Alpha Delta Psi, who, after graduating from Bowdoin, went on to become an editor, author, poet and educator.  His papers are held at the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections and Archives at Bowdoin College. [note: thanks to the Archives Assistant for her help in researching this album]

Several signers indicated membership in an organization called the B. L. of W. R.  If you have any information about this organization, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  It might be no more than a brotherhood of close childhood friends.  Or it might have been larger in scope.

The consensus so far is that this was an organization of young friends from Fryeburg, or students at Fryeburg Academy, but further proof is needed.

C. L. Eaton, member of B. L. of W. R.:

John I. Holt of Fryeburg, Maine, a member of B. L. of W. R., signed a page in 1874:

Frank E. Howe, member of B. L. of W. R.:

Thomas Souther of Fryeburg, Maine, member of B. L. of W. R.:

Williams Souther, a member of B. L. of W. R. and Alpha Delta Phi, signed a page in 1874: [note: several items of correspondence and obituary pertaining to Williams Souther can be accessed here.]

Francisco P. Machado of Lagua La Grande, Cuba, signed a page in 1874 while he was a student at Gorham Seminary:

Perhaps Ignacio de la Torre of Cienfuegos, Cuba, who signed a page in 1874, was also a student at Gorham Seminary:

Be aware that the Special Collections Department at Bowdoin is likely to have information to share on Bowdoin graduates or attendees, as mentioned in the case of Williams Souther, above.

1880s-1900s Autograph Album with signers in Kenduskeag and Levant area of Maine; possibly owned by Alice Irene Hasey, "Rena"

1880s-1900s Autograph Album with signers in Kenduskeag and Levant area of Maine; possibly owned by Alice Irene Hasey, "Rena".

The album measures approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 36 of the owner's relatives and friends, mostly from the Penobscot County, Maine, towns of Kenduskeag and Levant. The title page is missing, and there may be other missing pages in the front.

An alphabetized list of the inscribers, some of whom inscribed multiple pages, appears at the end of this post.

Uncle and Aunt Frank Herbert Barwise and his wife Nellie Emma (Mills) Barwise of Bangor, Maine, married in 1877, signed adjoining pages, presumably in the 1880s or 1890s.

Another signer, Lizzie F. Turner of Kenduskeag, identified herself as the owner's cousin.

Miss Addie M. Clark of Kenduskeag signed a page in 1883:

Mrs. H. M. Doyen of West Levant, Maine, signed a page in 1890:

F. B. McLaughlin of Levant, Maine, signed a page in 1891.  I believe he was Fred B. McLaughlin.

Mary A. McLaughlin, who I believe was Fred's sister, signed the adjoining page:

1880s Autograph Album of Helen Agnes Mead of North Bridgton, Maine - many students of North Bridgton Academy

1880s autograph album presented to Helen A. Mead of North Bridgton, Maine, by her mother on Christmas day, 1883.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains 107 autographs of relatives, and friends, many of whom were students at North Bridgton Academy.

Helen Agnes Mead was born 2 April 1871 at Bridgton, Maine, the daughter of John Mead, Jr., and wife Nancy J. (Jordan) Mead.

Her paternal grandparents were John and Lucinda (Longley) Mead.  Her maternal grandparents were James R. and Sarah Goodhue (Proctor) Jordan.

I think Helen moved to Massachusetts at some point, but I'd like to find confirmation of that.  If you have any corrections to the information presented here, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Helen's mother Nancy J. (Jordan) Mead was likely the N. J. Mead who signed the page below in 1884,as the handwriting looks very similar to the presentation page, above.

Helen's father, John Mead, Jr., signed the page below in 1887:

Helen's brother, James Carroll Mead, signed the page below in 1884:

Many of the pages were signed by students at North Bridgton Academy in the 1880s.

I was able to flesh out the initials of some of the signers by referring to the booklet "A Souvenir - Bridgton Academy, North Bridgton, Maine, Reunion of the Alumni, June 1895".

Two pages that contain the classes of some of the signers:

1880s Autograph of Annie Bryant of Union, Maine

1880s autograph album of Annie Bryant of Union, Maine.

At first blush, I thought she was Annie J. Bryant, but I found several records for an Annie I. Bryant, and one that indicated her formal name was Analostine I. Bryant.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" and contains 22 autographs of relatives and friends.

From clues in the album, I believe the album's owner was the Annie Bryant born about December 1856 in Union, Maine, to Joseph and Irene Vose (Sumner) Bryant, born in Union and Warren, Maine, respectively.

This Annie's paternal grandparents were Joseph and Nancy (Sibley) Bryant.  Her maternal grandparents were Charles and Nancy (Coggan) Sumner.

Annie married Frank C. Flint in 1892; they lived at Rockland, Maine, and raised at least one child, a son Carl.

If you have an alternative to the owner of the album or corrections to any of the information provided here, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The Joseph Bryant who signed a page in Annie's album in 1881 was probably her father, as I believe her grandfather  of the same name had died by the 1880s.

There's a page signed by a Nancy Bryant in Mach of 1882, who may have been the elder Joseph's widow, Nancy (Sibley) Bryant.  If this page was signed by Nancy (Sibley) Bryant, she died later that  year, according to what I found online, although I didn't see her actual death record.

Annie's two brothers signed pages in her album.  C. R. Bryant, who was most likely Charles Ralph Bryant, who signed in 1882:

And her brother Jeffery Wilford Bryant of Union, who also signed in 1882:
