Bangor Maine studios: 3 1920s Graduation Photographs

Three Graduation Photographs taken by Bangor, Maine, studios.  All are in protective covers; all have first names only.  Two are from 1924 and one from 1929.

1)  By the Chalmers Studio, Bangor, Maine: Sincerely, George [or Ginge], 1924

2)   By the Chalmers Studio, Bangor, Maine: B.H.S., '24, Sincerely, Charlotte [Just over the river from Bangor is the city of Brewer, Maine, so BHS could represent Bangor or Brewer or even another town.

3)  By the studio of Albert E. Klyne: Best Wishes from Carl, '29"  Albert E. Klyne was located at Bangor, Maine, and was known for taking many photographs of graduates of the University of Maine at Orono, as well as Bangor high school area grads.

These photographs were found with a collection of graduation photographs from 1915 and 1917. Joseph H. Lane indicated that he was from the Class of 1916, but I'm not sure when the two women graduated.

Miriam Batchelder

Miriam Batchelder was born 10 October 1900 at Concord, New Hampshire, the daughter of Bennett and Annie L. (Rogers) Batchelder, born at Hastings,  Minnesota and Providence, Rhode Island respectively.

On 25 September 1926 at Concord, New Hampshire, Miriam married George E. Bidwell, born about 1900, the son of Frank Elbert Bidwell and Florence E. (Beach) Bidwell, Massachusetts natives.

According to his marriage record, George was born at Plymouth, Indiana, although the Censuses show his birth state as Georgia.  His father had mining businesses in several states. By the time of the 1930 Census, George, Miriam and their two children were living at Plymouth, Indiana.

Joseph H. Lane, Class of 1916

Joseph H. Lane was born 25 September 1898, the son of undertaker Louis Andrew Lane and Harriet (Laycock) Lane, who were born in Concord, New Hampshire and Bradford, England, respectively.  

Harriet had emigrated to North America with her family, first to Canada and then to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where her father was a Methodist minister.  Harriet's brother had an orange plantation in Tuscaloosa Alabama.  While staying with him, she attended Tuscaloosa Female College, from which she graduated.  

At the time of her marriage, she had been planning to attend the Boston School of Oratory.  Her brother, Craven Laycock, was a professor of oratory at Dartmouth College.

Joseph Hilliard Lane went on to graduate from Dartmouth College.  By the time of the 1930 Census, he was living at Chattanooga, Tennesee, with his sister Martha Allison Lane, and was employed as a sales manager at a furniture company.

Here is a letter he wrote to Life Magazine, which appeared in the 26 October 1953 issue:

Joseph married Octavia Hoyle Sizer of Chattanooga, Tennessee.  She was born about 1902 in Tennessee, the daughter of James B. and Susan (Moore) Sizer.

Irene Esther Williamson

Irene Esther Williamson was born 5 May 1898 at Concord, New Hampshire, the daughter of Walter and Mary Lizzie (Plummer) Williamson, both New Hampshire natives.

On 10 June 1922 at Concord, New Hampshire, Irene married Philip Haseltine Blodgett.  He was born 5 September 1893 at Allenstown, New Hampshire, the son of Frank Edwards Blodgett and wife Jennie Emery (Haseltine) Blodgett, born in Massachusetts and New Hampshire respectively.

Irene and Philip raised their family at Concord, New Hampshire.  On the 1930 Census of Concord, Philip indicated that he was part owner of a lumber mill.

Class of 1917 Concord HS, Concord, New Hamphire: Graduation Photographs of Three Students

Three photographs of 1917 graduates of Concord High School, Concord, New Hampshire.  They are all in protective covers, two produced by the Kimball studio and one by the Harvey studio, both of Concord, New Hampshire.

In alphabetical order, the graduates are:
Russell Cushing
Lucy Donovan
Charlotte Seaver

Russell Cushing [the handwriting is very faint, but I believe I have the name correct]

The ID image above was tweaked but it's still very hard to decipher. What looks like the cross of a "t" after the "h" is disconcerting, but it may be an irrelevant mark - or not...

I found birth records for a Russell Emery Cushing, born 18 April 1899 at Concord, New Hampshire, the son of George R. and Hattie S. (Emery) Cushing, and Russell Cushing born at Lochmere, New Hampshire about 1899, the son of George and Alice (Baker) Cushing. 

If you have knowledge of another Russell Cushing or another student in the Class of 1917 at Concord High School with a name that could be deciphered from the ID above, please weigh in. 

Lucy Donovan

Could this Lucy Donovan be the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Bland) Donovan?  If so, she was born Lucy Bland Donovan on 22 August 1900 at Concord, New Hampshire.  She married Harry G. Owen in 1933, also at Concord, New Hampshire.

Charlotte Seaver

There's a Charlotte Seaver of about the right age living at Keene, New Hampshire, in the 1900-1920 Censuses, daughter of Eugene and Margaret.  It's possible she was not a graduate of Concord High School, but rather of Keene, High School, and traveled to Concord to have her graduation portrait done.  Or perhaps the family, or just Charlotte, lived at Concord for a year or more.

The photograph was found with in a collection of Concord High School graduation photographs, but I can't assume that Charlotte Seaver graduated from there.

Note: Here is a comment from a reader, below, regarding Lucile Cogswell:

Lucille Cogswell: (Sources at the end) Lucille Cogswell was born 19 Aug 1897 in Concord, NH, the daughter of Edward M and M Madeline (Perry) Cogswell. Her ethnicity was listed as Canadian at birth. In 1910 she was living at 56 Rumford St, Concord, NH, with her parents, her paternal grandmother, and a paternal aunt. Her father was a foreman of a railroad freight house. Everyone in the household had been born in New Hampshire to parents born in New Hampshire. A family tree says that Lucille married Lloyd Prey about 1918. Lloyd had been born about 1897. Sure enough, there is a Lloyd G and Lucille Pray living in Washington DC in 1920. A transcription says that Lucille was 22 and born in New Hampshire and Lloyd was 36, born in Michigan.  In 1930 their image tells us they had been married 12 years. Lloyd and Lucille were both pharmacists; Lloyd owned his own drugstore.

She and her husband are living in Pembroke NH in 1930. Son Charles 2y 10m. 

Her husband Laurence Frederick Whittemore is likely buried in Pembroke Street Cemetery, Pembroke. But there is no link to her.
Dates for him at findagrave.com (Jun 8, 1894 - Aug 10, 1960). He was in WWI.

See another 1898 Sanford studio photograph of Katherine A. Moloney.  These young women were likely classmates, at high school or at college.


I found a McDougall family in the North Adams area, but I don't know if Grace belongs to this family.  Her family may have been at North Adams for a time but not during a Census year or year in which they might have left a record easy to find.
