Ruth R., possibly Maine or Maritimes, friend of Marion (Rawding) Dinsmore

Postcard to Marion Rawding (who later married Willard Alton Dinsmore) from Ruth R., sadly no postal markings for clues.  Marion married her Alton in 1922, so this postcard precedes that date.

Marion, who lived in Calais, Maine, corresponded with many people from Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.   Her father, Fletcher Rawding, moved to Calais from the Clementsport area of Nova Scotia.





Ruth must have been a close friend, since she used Marion's nickname of "Biddy" in the salutation.

December 20, 1901 photograph of a woman identified on the reverse as Genevieve Hogan.  The photograph was taken by the McKay studio of Calais, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Genevieve Hogan was born about November 1881 in Maine, daughter of Richard and Martha Jane (Daley) Hogan, who were born at Calais, Maine, and nearby Milltown, New Brunswick, respectively. By the time of the 1900 Census of Calais, Maine, Genevieve's father had died, and Martha was remarried to Michael McDermott, with Genevieve and two of her Hogan siblings also in the household.  By the time of the 1910 Census, Genevieve had left the household.

From online research, hopefully correct:


Michael Alexander Brogan was born 25 January 1877 in New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Daniel and Catherine (Finnigan) Brogan.  I believe his paternal grandparents were Alexander and Ann Agnes (Dolan) Brogan.  His maternal grandparents were Michael and Mary (Gillan) Finnigan.


Michael came to live in the US about 1895.  In 1912, he married Elizabeth Theresa Conboy , who was born about 1877 in Maine, the daughter of John and Mary (possibly Craugh).  The couple resided in Calais, Maine.  In the 1930 Census, Michael gave his occupation as restaurant proprietor.Note: See the comment below in which a reader gives Michael's year of death as 1948.

Group Photo, Marguerite Frances Merrill, Edna L. Merrill & Orville (?) Moulton, Mechanic Falls, Maine area

Photograph of three youngsters, identfied as Marguerite Merrill, Edna Merrill and Orville (??) Moulton.

Online research shows Marguerite Frances Merrill and Edna L. Merrill were the daughters of Frederick Lincoln and Clara S. (Leighton) Merrill.  Marguerite was born in March 1896, and Edna was born Nov. 1899.  There was another sister, Caroline, born in 1908.  The family lived in Mechanic Falls, Maine.

I kept going back in the family lines to see if the name Moulton might fit in somewhere, with no success so far.   Perhaps a reader might have some insight to add.  Also, please take a look at the ID info on back and let me know if you think the boy's name is something other than Orville.

Orphan Bible of Emma J. Robinson, Calais, Maine

Bible that was presented to Emma J. Robinson, Christmas, 1899.  Online research shows that Emma J. Robinson was born in 1883 and died in 1926; she resided in Calais, Maine.  Her parents were Thomas Ira and Helen E. (Temple) Robinson.  Thomas Ira Robinson was born in New Brunswick, Canada; Helen E. Temple was born in Maine to parents who emigrated from England.

No other information inside.

Family Bible of Pierce M. & Mary J. (Williams) Jones, Brownville, Maine

Bible of Pierce M. Jones and Mary J. (Williams) Taylor Jones of Brownville, Maine.  The Bible is poor condition, with missing cover and pages and loose binding.

The births pages lists 3 children, with no birth dates or places indicated:

1. Rowland, born April 27, 1884 in Maine
2. Owen, born Owen William Jones on January 16, 1886 at Monson, Maine
3. Margaret, born May 15, 1895 in Maine

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome]

Pierce M. Jones was born, according to a Find-a-Grave listing, May 29, 1855 and died January 25, 1944. His future wife, Mary J. (Williams), daughter of Owen and Margaret Williams, was born January 21, 1861 and died December 24, 1922.  They're buried at Brownville Village Cemetery at Brownville, Maine.
