1884-1890 autograph album that belonged to a Lottie, presumably from Lincoln Center in Lincoln, Maine, where most of the inscribers resided.
Judging from the inscribers, Lottie may have been Charlotte G. Scammon (1879-1919), daughter of Francis D. Scammon and second wife Hannah Jeanette (Heald) Scammon. By 1900, according to the US Census, Charlotte, still single, was teaching at Willimantic, Maine.
The Minnie Scammon who inscribed a page on January 23, 1887, was presumably Charlotte's older sister, Minnie Laura Scammon (1868-1949), who would marry Frank H. Annis.
Lottie's "Aunt Angie" inscribed a page, facing that of E. E. Hatch. They were Angie M. (Heald) Hatch (1860-1924) and Everett E. Hatch of Chester, Maine, who married in 1884. Angie was a younger sister to Charlotte's mother Hannah Jeanette (Heald) Scammon.
In 1907 Charlotte married John Roscoe Reed (1875-1953) of Wellington, Maine. They farmed at Plymouth, Maine, and Hermon, Maine. After Charlotte's death, John married Mae (Murphy) Smith. Charlotte, John and Mae are buried in the Pine Tree Cemetery in Hermon, Maine; Charlotte's infant daughter is buried with them. Charlotte's other daughter survived into adulthood.
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, especially if you believe Lottie was someone other than Charlotte G. (Scammon) Read, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
The album measures approximately 4" by 2-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 30 of Lottie's relatives, friends and teachers. An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.
The last entry in the album is the inscription of E. A. Thornton of Lincoln Center, Lincoln, Maine, who sketched pansies. If you recognize the name E. A. Thornton, please leave a comment. The inscription of Emma Barney of Lincoln Center, Lincoln, Maine is at left; her middle initial may have been J or I.
