1878-1890s autograph album that belonged to Florence A. (Thorne) Ackley, "Flora", from before and after her marriage to Dr. Winfield Ackley.  Most of the inscriptions were acquired from Juniata, Nebraska, where Dr. Ackley practiced medicine.

Other inscriptions came from the couple's relatives and friends in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska and Ohio.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Florence A. Thorne was born about July 1860 in Barry County, Michigan, the daughter of William Benjamin Thorne and Deborah (Bowerman) Thorne.  On February 26, 1880 at Baldwin, Michigan, Florence married Dr. Winfield Ackley, son of Calvin Ackley and Gertrude (Walker) Ackley.  I believe Dr. Ackley was born about 1848 in Fulton County, Ohio.   Read more about Dr. Winfield Ackley's education and medical practice here.

The Calvin Ackley who inscribed a page was presumably Dr. Winfield Ackley's father.

The L. Ackley, who inscribed a page at Stanwood, Iowa, on March 14, 1880, may have been Dr. Winfield Ackley's brother Leman Ackley.

Florence and Dr. Ackley had at least one child, Guy Winfield Ackley, born in 1882, who also became a physician, but died young in Idaho in 1918.  Dr. Winfield Ackley died in 1932 and Florence died in 1935.  They're buried, with son Guy, in the Juniata Cemetery at Juniata, Nebraska.

Other inscribers who mentioned a kinship or with the surname Ackley:
  • Anna; Florence's cousin
  • Edna J. McKelvey; inscribed at Juniata, Nebraska, on February 15, 1883.  Florence's cousin.
  • Josie A. Snow; inscribed on March 6, 1880 at Fayette, Ohio.  Sister of Florence's husband Dr. Winfield Ackley and wife of Charles Adelbert Snow

On January 4, 1905 in Brown County, Kansas, Mary Ann Walters married Willis Earl Justice of Ohio.  They lived in Brown County, Kansas, and had at least two children, one of whom, Harold Dwight Justice, inscribed two pages in his mother's album.

1880s/1890s autograph album of Minnie Blanche Coryell, "Dot", of Junction City, Kansas, with inscriptions from Kansas and Michigan.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Minnie Blanche Coryell, "Dot" was born about October 24, 1875 in Kansas, the daughter of John Sherwood Coryell and Nancy Eliza (Thomas) Coryell.

On July 17, 1906 at Junction City, Kansas, Dot married widower Frederick L. Coryell.  Fred had a son from his previous marriage, Frederick M. Durland, whose name appears on tape at the top of a page inscribed by Eva Durland at Junction City, Kansas, in 1891, probably placed there long after 1891.

I believe Fred and Dot had a child of their own, son Frank Coryell Durland, who was born in 1912 and died in 1951.   Dot was presumably the Blanche C. Durland who died in August 1964 and is buried in Highland Cemetery at Junction City, Kansas, with Fred, their son and other relatives.

Among Dot's relatives who noted a kinship on their pages [and there were likely more who didn't specify a kinship]:
  • Jennette Coryell Carpenter of Orion, Michigan.  Her mother, Jennette (Coryell) Carpenter was a sister to Dot's father John Sherwood Coryell
  • Alene Coryell or Allene Coryell, daughter of Dot's brother Myron Levert Coryell.  Written on the page inscribed by Jennette Carpenter, Dot's cousin.
  • Nettie Lyon; inscribed at Junction City, Kansas, on January 4, 1889.  Dot's cousin.  Dot's later note:  "Married A. Kerr - '92".  Eliza Jennette Lyon, "Nettie", married Arthur Middleton Kerr on February 25, 1892 at Junction City, Kansas.
  • Claire L. Lyon; inscribed on October 24, 1888; Dot's cousin.  Either Claire or Dot added the married surname Brooks.  Claire L. Lyon married Frank H. Brooks in Geary County, Kansas, on February 6, 1889.
  • Loi Thomas, or Lou Thomas; inscribed on December 16, 1890; Dot's cousin.  Dot's later note:  "Married Harley - Sept. 1897"

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Claire L. Lyon; inscribed on October 24, 1888; Dot's cousin.  Either Claire or Dot added the married surname Brooks.  Claire L. Lyon married Frank H. Brooks in Geary County, Kansas, on February 6, 1889.

Belle Hoskins; inscribed on March 8, 1889.  Either Belle or Dot added the married surname Lorton to Belle's name.  Isabella Hoskins married Jesse Green Lorton on June 10, 1891 at Junction City, Kansas.  She and Jesse, a captain in the 21s7 Engineers, US Army, are buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  He died in 1929 and she in 1933.

1881-1892 autograph album of Anna Moore of La Porte City, Iowa, with inscriptions from Iowa and Michigan.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 15 of Anna's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Anna Moore was born about 1864 at Niles, Michigan, the daughter of Lorenzo Adam Moore and Hannah Ann (Goode) Moore.  Two of Anna's siblings, brothers Charles Edward Moore and Harry Moore, inscribed pages in her album.

C. E. Moore; inscribed at Albion, Michigan, on December 21, 1881.  Charles Edward Moore, Anna's older brother.

Harry Moore; inscribed "At Home" on July 29, 1888.  Harry was Annie's younger brother

Anna's cousin, Eva Moore of La Porte City, Iowa, inscribed a page in the album.  Anna's father, Lorenzo Adam Moore, and Eva's father, Andrew Young Moore, were brothers.

On March 28, 1888 in Black Hawk County, Iowa, Anna Moore married New York native Timothy H. Holland, son of William Holland and Mary (Powers) Holland.  Anna and Timothy moved to Missouri.  They had at least one child, daughter Fannie.

It's possible Timothy and Anna are the Timothy Holland, who died in 1918, and Anna Holland, who died in 1919, buried in Plot 19 in the Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum at St. Louis, Missouri.  There's also a Fannie Holland buried in Plot 14.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The album didn't contain preprinted designs, so it's very possible that the sketch below was done by inscriber Eva Bigsby of Waterloo, Iowa.  It's wonderful!

Inscribers in the Album
  • Ada E. Bigsby of Waterloo, Iowa; inscribed on July 9, 1882.  If it was she who sketched two owls on a branch, rather than a preprinted design, Ada was talented indeed!

1886-1893 Autograph Album of Anna Higman, "Annie", of Bastrop, Louisiana; Student at Morehouse College at Bastrop

1888-1893 large autograph album that belonged to Anna Higman, "Annie", of Bastrop, Louisiana.  During at least part of this time, Annie was a student at Morehouse College at Bastrop, Louisiana, which is located in Morehouse Parish.  One inscriber called it Bastrop College.

Annie inscribed her name on the first page of handwriting in the album and followed it up with a dedication page.

The album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 6-3/4" and contains 94 sentiments from Annie's relatives, friends, schoolmates and at least one former teacher.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Anna Higman was born about 1869 in Louisiana, the daughter of William Abraham Higman and Sarah L. (Pratt) Higman, "Sallie".  Annie's father had died by the time she started acquiring inscriptions in this album, but her mother inscribed a page at Bastrop, Louisiana, on February 11, but she did not write a year.

Other relatives in the album who expressed a kinship [and there were likely more who did not express a kinship]
  • H. M. Helen, "your sister"; inscribed a group page.  Presumably Annie's sister Helen Higman.
  • Mervin B. Higman of Bastrop, Louisiana; inscribed a group page.  Annie's brother.
  • Cousin M. C. L.; inscribed at Bastrop, Louisiana, on February 18, 1888.
  • A. O. P., or R. O. P.; inscribed at B. B. on July 30, 1887.  "Your Auntie".  Could the P stand for Pratt, the surname of Annie's mother?
  • Anna; Annie's aunt; inscribed on December 11, 1887.  Full page sentiment
  • Jane; inscribed on August 22, 1893 at Ruston, Louisiana.  Annie's Aunt Jane
  • J. B. Higman; inscribed at Bastrop, Louisiana, on March 19, 1888.  Annie's Uncle John Brisco Higman, who was a brother to Annie's father, William Abraham Higman.
  • Myrtle Higman; inscribed on March 19, 1888 at Bastrop, Louisiana.  Annie's cousin Myrtle Higman was the daughter of Emma Charity (Patton) Higman and John Brisco Higman, who was a brother to Annie's father William Abraham Higman.  Myrtle was about 7 when she inscribed this page.

Sometime before 1890, Annie married Forest Thompson, son of George Washington Thompson and Harriet E. (O'Neal) Thompson.  I believe they were the G. W. Thompson and H. E. Thompson who inscribed pages in the album.

G. W. Thompson of Downsville, Louisiana; inscribed on January 10, 1892

H. E. Thompson [name partially obscured] of Downsville, Louisiana; inscribed on January 13, 1892.

The album also contains a page inscribed by B. F. Thompson of Ruston, Louisiana, on July 24, 1893.  Could Forest have been a middle name?  Or was this an uncle?

Forest and Annie named one of their children Benjamin Franklin Thompson, born in 1891.  They had two other children, before Annie died sometime in, I believe, in the middle to late 1890s.  Forest married Elma Henry in 1899 and had more children.

I haven't found a death record or grave listing for Annie.  Hopefully a reader has more information.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
