1898 program of the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Seaside Local Union Christian Endeavor at the Congregational Church, Bluehill, Maine, Friday, September 2, 1898.

The program consists of one sheet of paper approximately 8-1/4" x 5-1/4", folded in half for final dimensions of about 4-1/8" x 5-1/4".  It was printed by Enterprise Print.  The town is known today as Blue Hill, Maine.

Obituary of Sherman Day, Class of 1826, in 1885 Yale College Obituary Record

Obituary of Sherman Day, Class of 1826, included in the June 1885 issue of Obituary Record of Graduates of Yale College.  Sherman Day was at various times a merchant, engineer, professor, member of the California legislature US Surveyor General for California.

Sherman Day, the only child of President Jeremiah Day, by
his first wife, Martha, daughter of Roger Sherman, was born in
New Haven, February 13, 1806, while his father was still Professor of Mathematics.

From 1826 to 1835 he was engaged in business as a merchant
in New York, Philadelphia, and Marseilles, and while settled in
New York was married, September 6, 1832, to Elizabeth A.,
daughter of Henry King of Westfield, Mass.; a large part of the
next two years was spent in Marseilles. In 1835 he abandoned
mercantile pursuits, and from 1836 to 1841 resided in Ohio and
Indiana, engaged in civil engineering.  He then returned to the
East, and while living in New Haven and Philadelphia, compiled
a volume entitled “ Historical Collections of Pennsylvania," which was published in 1843 (708 pp. 8vo). He then resumed a mercantile life, doing business in New York and St. Louis.
Severe losses, together with failing health, induced him to embark for California in June, 1849. Thenceforth he devoted himself to surveying and engineering, civil and mining, and both in his profession and outside it impressed himself on the community as a man of unswerving Christian principle and integrity. In 1854 his family joined him, and for 1855 and 1856 he was a member of the State Senate from Santa Clara County. In 1855 he surveyed a route for a wagon road across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At this time his residence was at Oakland, Cal., and there most of his later years were spent. He was one or the original trustees of the College of California, and for a short time held the professorship of Mine Construction and Surveying. From September, 1868, to February, 1871, he was United States Surveyor General for California. After a year or two of feebleness, he died from a disease of the heart, at Berkeley, Cal., December 14, 1884, in his 79th year. His wife died in 1873. Two sons and two daughters are still living; one daughter is the wife of Charles T. H. Palmer (Y.C. 1847).

I believe that Sherman and Elizabeth Ann (King) Day had six, or possibly seven, children:

• Roger Sherman Day, born 6 July 1838 in Ohio; married Harriet Eliza Gilman Clark
• Martha Elizabeth Day, born 18 April 1842 in Pennsylvania
• Jane Olivia Day, born about 6 November 1844 at Brooklyn, New York; married Henry Austin Palmer
• Clinton Day, born 17 March 1847 in New York; married Grace Wakefield
• There may have been another daughter, Mary Day, born about 1849 in New York

Bible Cover Listing the 1790s Births of the Children of Daniel & Sarah McAllaster of Lovell, Maine

All that I have of the book above, which may have been a Family Bible, is the back cover, the inside of which lists the birth dates of the McAllaster children.

I believe them to be the children of Daniel & his first wife Sarah (Russell) McAllaster of Lovell, Maine, though online references have the family as McAllister.  

Those references show two other sons for the couple, Jeremiah James McAllister and Peter McAllister, both of whom survived to old age.  The book may have had a scrap of paper at one time to record the additional births.

• Zaccheus McAllaster, born 1 July 1788
• Mary McAllaster, born 19 or 29 August 1790; died 23 December 179x [can't decipher last digit]
• John McAllaster, born 25 October 1791
• Jane McAllaster, born 21 January 1794.  Online trees have James, but this shows Jane
• Daniel McAllaster, born 24 January 1796; died July 179x [can't decipher last digit]
• Sarah McAllaster, born 1 March 1798; died [possibly] February 1799

These dates differ a bit from those in online trees.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Zaccheus McAllaster married Tryphosa "Missey" Heald at Lovell, Maine, on 1 October 1811.  They had, I believe, ten children.

John McAllaster married Lydia Evans at Lovell, Maine, on 17 March 1817.  They had, I believe, seven children.

The unmentioned Jeremiah James McAllister married Sally Wilson and Mary E. Abbott and had several children with each of them.

The unmentioned Peter McAllister married Ruth Elder and had, possibly, eleven children.  I don't know how many went on to raise families of their own.

Obituary of Henry Curtiss Beardslee, Class of 1826, in 1885 Yale College Obituary Record

Obituary of Henry Curtiss Beardslee, Class of 1826, included in the June 1885 edition of the Obituary Record of Graduates of Yale College.  He practiced medicine in Connecticut and Ohio, served in the Connecticut legislature and was the examining surgeon for his Ohio Congressional district for approximately 12,000 men entering service in the Civil War.  His avocation was botany.

Henry Curtiss Beardslee, son of Dr. Gideon and Sarah Ann (Curtiss) Beardslee, was born in that part of Huntington which is since 1823 the town of Monroe, Connecticut, July 2, 1807.
His father died in 1826, and in May, 1827, he began the study of medicine in New Haven, graduating at the Medical Institution in 1829. He shortly after opened an office in Montville, Connecticut, and soon had an extensive but laborious country practice. He was elected to the State legislature in 1844.
In May, 1845, he removed to Painesville, O. [Painesville, Ohio], where he devoted himself for the rest of his life to his profession, becoming especially skillful and successful in the more difficult surgical operations. He died in Painesville, December 21, 1884, in his 78th year.
He married in the spring of 1833 Miss Harriet Hawley, of Monroe, by whom he had three daughters and two sons. he died July 8, 1860, and in November, 1861, he married Miss Clementine M. Carrier, of Enfield, N.H.. She survives him with her three sons, and a daughter and a son by his first marriage.
The most laborious portion of Dr. Beardslee's professional life was from 1863-1865, when as examining surgeon for his Congressional district he examined upwards of 12,000 candidates for military service. His health failed in 1882, and the last three years were years off great and increasing weakness.
Outside of his profession he was especially interested in botany and has left an unpublished catalogue of the plants of the State compiled for the use of the Geological survey.

Baby photograph of Estelle Morton Hadley of Jackson, Maine

Photograph of a baby identified on the reverse as Estelle Morton Hadley at age 5 months.  

From online research, I found that Estelle was born at Jackson, Maine on 8 July 1901, daughter of Herbert Charles Hadley and Annie Cora (Morton) Hadley.  Her birth record shows her given name as Estella, but other records show Estelle.

On 16 June 1923, Estelle married Frederick Everett Stevens, Jr., son of Frederick Everett Stevens and Margaret A. (Haswell) Stevens.  Frederick was born at Frankfort, Maine, on 12 March 1902.

Estelle and Fred lived at Frankfort, Maine, and Jackson, Maine, and raised at least one child, a daughter.  Fred died in 1867, and Estelle in 1981, both at Belfast, Maine.
