#1 of 2 1880s Autograph Albums of Ina B. Durgin of Mechanic Falls, Maine; while She was at Norway, Maine

1880s autograph album of Ina B. Durgin of Mechanic Falls, Maine, and apparently also of Norway, Maine, where she may have been working when these sentiments were acquired.  The album was given to her by her brother Albert F. Durgin on April 2, 1881 at Norway, Maine.

Ina wasted no time in filling this autograph album and started another one that she presumably received at Christmas in 1882.  See another post that features the later album.

This earlier album measures approximately 6-1/4" by 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 90 of Ina's relatives and friends.  Evie Andrews inscribed her page at the Norway Shop Shop on February 8, 1882; it's possible that Ina, and perhaps many of the other inscribers, worked there.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ina B. Durgin was born February 10, 1865 in Maine, the daughter of William R. Durgin and Esther Ann (Turner) Durgin.   Ina's parents both signed pages in her album.

Ina had at least four siblings: Julia; Albert; Merrill and Elmer.  In addition to the presentation page, Albert inscribed another page in the album, on April 3, 1881.  

Brother Merrill M. Durgin and his future wife Mary Flora Tubbs inscribed pages, as they did in the other album, after their marriage.  

Brother Elmer E. Durgin of Mechanic Falls, Maine, inscribed a page on September 18, 1882.   

I found two marriage records for Ina B. Durgin and Edwin Henry Downs, one at Minot, Maine, on January 7, 1887, and another at Lewiston, Maine, on January 25, 1888.  Edwin Henry Downs, born February 17, 1862, was the son of Asa L. Downs and Clara Jane (Perkins) Downs.   Edwin inscribed a page in Ina's other album on July 21, 1884, but he didn't inscribe a page in this one.

Ina and Edwin lived at Minot, Maine, and Mechanic Falls, Maine.  They had at least two children, daughters Ola Francena Downs and Esther Jane Downs.  Edwin died in 1941 and Ina in 1944.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s autograph album of Berniece E. Allen of Centerville, Maine, and Columbia, Maine.  The album was presented to Berniece by her teacher, R. C. Drisko on July 30, 1881.  He was Raymond Chandler Drisko.

Some records show Berniece' name as Bernice, and some of the inscribers spelled their town as Centreville, rather than Centerville.  Centerville residents voted to dissolve the town in 2003; it's now part of the Unorganized Territories.

The album measures approximately 6-1/4" by 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 70 of Berniece's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Berniece E. Allen was born August 22, 1871, the daughter of Ebenezer F. Allen, "Eben" and Julia M. (Smith) Allen.  Eben was involved in civic affairs and held several offices in Columbia Falls, Maine.   Berniece's parents inscribed pages in her album in 1886.

Berniece's brother Seth Allen inscribed a page in 1892.

I believe that Berniece had at least one year of post-secondary education, possibly at a teacher's college.  She owned a store at Columbia Falls.

Almeda Cook, "Media", was born November 26, 1869 at Steuben, Maine, the daughter of George S. Cook and Malinda Jane (Lambert) Cook, who, I believe, were born in Maine and New Brunswick, respectively, though some Censuses listing them switch Maine/New Brunswick up.  Many people from the border area moved back and forth; were residents of New Brunswick islands who were delivered by an Eastport, Maine, doctor; and considered the border a botheration.

Among Media's relatives to inscribe pages in the album was her mother, Malinda Jane (Lambert) Cook.

About December 1887, Media married Ernest Clifford Gordon, son of Amaziah and Sarah J. (Badger) Gordon.  Before their marriage, Ernest inscribed a page in Media's album; he updated the page in 1903.

Media and Ernest had two daughters, Lela Blanch Gordon and Mona Elaine Gordon.  Lela inscribed two pages in her mother's album, before her marriage to Earl Ross Jellison.

The later sentiments in the album were left by Lela's daughters Barbara E. Jellison and Norma Lee Jellison.

Fryeburg Academy, established formally in 1792, is not only one of the first educational institutions in Maine but also one of the first in the nation to accept women students.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Amy White Leavitt was born September 15, 1879 at Eastport, Maine, the daughter of Samuel Dean Leavitt and Emily C. (White) Leavitt, noted residents of that city.  Amy attended Vassar College in the early 1890s; a catalog from Vassar helpfully provided her middle name.  On January 18, 1901 at Eastport, Maine, Amy White Leavitt married Henry Chapman Waters, son of William and Emma M. (Wilson) Waters.

Presumably she was the Amy Leavitt Waters of Boston, Massachusetts, who left a testimonial in a 1914 Christian Science publication.  And she may have been the Amy Leavitt Waters whose diary of 1907-1910 is held at the New York Public Library.

Emily C. (White) Leavitt was born October 31, 1836 at Londonderry, New Hampshire, daughter of Reuben and Rachel (Corning) White.  On August 7, 1860 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, Emily married Samuel Dean Leavitt, son of Benjamin Brackett Leavitt and Harriet (Lamprey) Leavitt.  

Samuel was a leading citizen of Eastport, a lawyer, insurance broker, mayor, legislator and Customs Director, as well as serving on the board of several institutions.  His photograph and biography are included in The Biographical Review,  Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of Somerset, Piscataquis, Hancock, Washington and Aroostook Counties, Maine, Volume XXIX.

Benjamin Brackett Leavitt was born November 6, 1798 at Eastport, Maine, the son of Jonathan and Mary (Perkins) Leavitt of Hampton, New Hampshire, who had moved to Eastport about 1787.  Some sources give Benjamin's birth place as Exeter, New Hampshire.

Benjamin was a clerk, a merchant, a legislator and served a while as the Surveyor of the Port of Eastport, Maine.  Read more about him here.

In 1824 Benjamin married Harriet Lamprey, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Batchelder) Lamprey of New Hampshire.  They had seven children, but only two survived to maturity.  One of these was Samuel Deane Leavitt, another leading citizen of Eastport, Maine.
