1885-1898 Autograph Album of Hattie, Presumably of the Readfield, Maine, Area

Update of July 2018: scroll down to the comments where a reader has identified Hattie as Harriet Newell Weston, born in 1862 in Winthrop, Maine, daughter of Simeon Weston and Lavina (Blanchard) Weston.

1885-1898 autograph album that belonged to a Hattie, presumably of Kennebec County, Maine, in the Readfield, Maine area. The only clue to the album owner's name is the sentiment left by Ida M. Sanborn of Vienna, Maine, on July 16, 1887.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of fourteen of Hattie's friends. An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, including any residential or personal information they gave, appear at the end of this post.

Several of the signers were members of the Weston Family. Annie F. (Haynes) Weston and her husband Thomas Milton Weston of Kents Hill, Maine, signed facing pages; he dated his inscription December 19, 1886. Annie F. (Haynes/Haines) Weston was the daughter of Charles and Eliza A. (Low) Haynes. Thomas Milton Weston was the son of Simeon and Lavinia (Blanchard) Weston.

The Hattie N. Weston of Kents Hill, Maine, who signed a page on September 19, 1886, was presumably Thomas Milton Weston's sister, Harriet Newell Weston. Late in life, on December 23, 1928, she married widower Miles Everett Williams, whose first wife Ellen Susan (Joy) Williams had died earlier in the year.

Another sister of Thomas Milton Weston who signed a page in the album was Mary Alice (Weston) Rhino, or Alice Mary (Weston) Rhino, first wife of Simeon Lewis Rhino. She signed her page on October 2, 1886, when she was living at Boston, Massachusetts. She later married Charles F. Taylor.

Rosie H. Haynes of Winthrop, Maine, signed a page. She was a sister of Annie F. (Haynes) Weston.

1879-1880s Autograph Album of Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, of Holliston, Massachusetts

1879-1880s autograph album that belonged to Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, of Holliston, Massachusetts. The albums contains many pages signed by people in the Holliston, Massachusetts, area, and in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where Ella and her parents moved at some point after 1880.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 66 of Ella's relatives, schoolmates and friends. An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, complete with any family relationship, school or residence information, appears at the end of this post.

Mary Ella Wadsworth was born 28 October 1860 at New Sharon, Maine, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth, who were born in Maine and in Massachusetts respectively. Ella's parents signed a page in her album.

Ella had six siblings, only one of whom, George Melvin Wadsworth, signed a page in her album. To see the handwriting of Ella's other siblings, use the links above to view the posts on the two autograph albums of her brother John Franklin Wadsworth.

George Melvin Wadsworth signed his page as G. M. Wadsworth on a set of facing pages signed by 17 students at the Willard School. A comment left on a post that featured the 1878-1885 autograph album of a Nellie ? of the Boston/Quincy, Massachusetts area indicated that Theresa Fegan and Nellie Fegan, presumably Theresa Fegan and Ellen B. Fegan below, were teachers at the Willard School at Quincy, Massachusetts. The pages below are undated; I don't know whether the signers were students, teachers or a combination of the two.

In the 1880 Census, "Ella" was shown as living at Medway, Massachusetts, with her parents and brothers Charles and Arthur. At the time of the enumeration of the 1900 ["Mary E."] and 1910 ["Mary Ella"] Censuses, she, a schoolteacher, and her parents were living at Pawtucket, Rhode Island. By 1920, Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth had died; "M. Ella", a music teacher in a public school, and her father were still at Pawtucket. By the time of the 1930 Census of Pawtucket, John Wadsworth had died, and "Ella M." was still teaching, at the age of about 70. It's interesting that she referred to herself as Ella M. Wadsworth in her album and in the 1930 Census, when there was no one else to speak for her.

1878-1880s Autograph Album of John Franklin Wadsworth of Massachusetts: Fall River, Holliston and Somerville

1878-1880s autograph album that belonged to John Franklin Wadsworth, "Frank", who was born in Maine and reared in Massachusetts. The album contains autographs from two areas, the Holliston, Massachusetts, area, and the Fall River, Massachusetts area. Many of the signers indicated they were in the Class of 1879, some if not all at Holliston High School.

As noted on the ownership page below, the album was apparently a Christmas gift.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 116 of Frank's relatives, schoolmates and friends. An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, complete with any family relationship, school affiliation or residence information, appears at the end of this post.

John Franklin Wadsworth was born 15 May 1862 at New Sharon, Maine, the son of John and Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth, who were born in Maine and Massachusetts respectively. The Elizabeth Wadsworth who signed at page at Holliston, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1880, was presumably Frank's mother Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth.

Frank's father John Wadsworth did not sign a page in this album but he did sign a page, with his wife Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth in the album of Frank's sister Ella M. Wadsworth. You can see the similarity in Elizabeth's handwriting.

Four of Frank's siblings signed pages in his album. An earlier John had died the year of his birth. There also may have been a Frederick who did not survive to adulthood.

Brother Charles T. Wadsworth, who was born 23 December 1855 at Braintree, Massachusetts, signed a page at Holliston, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1880 and wrote "Colby '83" in one corner, presumably Colby College at Waterville, Maine. He had also signed a page in Frank's earlier album at Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 13, 1875.

Brother George Melvin Wadsworth, who was born 4 April 1857 at South Weymouth, Massachusetts, signed a page, also on May 7, 1880 at Holliston, Massachusetts. George's future wife, Elsie L. Warfield, also signed a page.

Brother Arthur Leonard Wadsworth, born 4 January 1864 at New Sharon, Maine, signed a page, also on May 7, 1880, at Holliston, Massachusetts.

Frank's sister Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, signed a page on February 4, with no year written, and mentioned that she was in the Class of 1879; she also signed on a page shared with 14 other students in the Class of 1879.

On 26 March, 1881 at Fall River, Massachusetts, John Franklin Wadsworth married Addie Louise Lake, daughter of Joseph and Amy (Thurston) Lake. Addie was born 11 March 1864 at Fall River, Massachusetts. Frank and Addie made their home at Fall River, Massachusetts, and raised, I believe, five children:

1875-1877 Autograph Album of John Franklin Wadsworth of Massachusetts: Fall River, Holliston, Somerville

1875-1877 autograph album that belonged to John Franklin Wadsworth, "Frank", who was born in Maine and reared in Massachusetts. The album contains signatures of well wishers from the Morse Grammar School at Somerville, from Holliston High School and from the Fall River, Massachusetts area. The family appears to have moved around.

Tucked in the album is a scrap of paper that indicates that the album belonged to the great grandfather of Kenneth Grace or Kenneth Grau.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 85 of John Franklin Wadsworth's relatives, schoolmates and friends. An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, complete with any family relationship, residence or school affiliation they may have added, appears at the end of this post.

John Franklin Wadsworth, "Frank", was born 15 May 1862 at New Sharon, Maine, the son of John and Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth, who were born in Maine and Massachusetts respectively. The parents did not sign pages in this album, but Elizabeth signed a page in Frank's other album, and both shared a page in Ella M. Wadsworth's album, which is shown below.

Frank's brother Charles T. Wadsworth, born 23 December 1855 at Braintree, Massachusetts, signed a page at Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 13, 1875.

An earlier child named John died in the year of his birth, 1857; he may have been a twin to George Melvin Wadsworth, who was born 4 April 1857 at South Weymouth, Massachusetts. George didn't sign a page in this album, but he did sign a page in Frank's later album, as did his future wife Elsie L. Warfield.

Sister Ella M. Wadsworth, which is the way she wrote her name in her autograph album, didn't sign a page in this album, unless she was the Marilla A. Wadsworth of Somerville, who signed a page on February 8, 1876 at Somerville, Massachusetts.

Compare the handwriting with the page where Ella A. Wadsworth wrote her name as the owner of her own album and on the page she signed at Holliston, Massachusetts, as M. Ella Wadsworth, in Frank's later album when she was a member of the Class of 1879, perhaps at Holliston High School or at the Willard School, presumably at Quincy, Massachusetts. The letters are not quite the same, but handwriting can evolve. The reason I mention the Willard School is that there is a set of undated facing pages in Ella's own album where 17 people signed and mentioned Willard School. Ella was not one of the signers, but their brother George Melvin Wadsworth was.

Another brother, Arthur Leonard Wadsworth, born 4 January 1864 at New Sharon, Maine, did not sign a page in this album but he did sign a page in Frank's other album. There may have been another brother, Frederick Wadsworth, who perhaps did not survive to adulthood.

On 26 March, 1881 at Fall River, Massachusetts, John Franklin Wadsworth married Addie Louise Lake, daughter of Joseph and Amy (Thurston) Lake. Addie was born 11 March 1864 at Fall River, Massachusetts. Frank and Addie made their home at Fall River, Massachusetts, and raised, I believe, five children:

1863-1899 Autograph Album of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, that may have belonged to Adoniram Judson Dunbar

1863-1899 autograph album that may have belonged to Adoniram Judson Dunbar of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, whose name appears on the inside front cover and one of the end papers.

The page above also notes that lawyer Charles Carroll King of Campello, Massachusetts, and Miss Abbie Etta Allen of New Bedford, Massachusetts, were married on Thursday, October 12, 1899 at New Bedford. Whether or not Adoniram himself or someone else added the note I don't know. There are many notes added to pages indicating when the signer was born or died. Many just say "Died", which isn't particularly helpful from the vantage point of 2014.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 86 people. Most signed their pages in the 1860s. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Adoniram Judson Dunbar was born 26 June 1830 at Brockton, Massachusetts, the son of Perez and Nancy Anne (Willis) Dunbar. Nancy had previously been married to Perez' older brother Ruel Dunbar, with whom she had several children. With Perez Dunbar, she had about four more.

On 12 November 1854, Adoniram Judson Dunbar, then a shoemaker, married Irish immigrant Margaret M. Stackpole, daughter, of Bartholomew Stackpole. Later Census records show them living independently of one another. Adoniram died in 1904 in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Actually Josiah was born in 1823 but that would have been an easy mistake for someone who knew his birth year but not necessarily the month and day of his birth.
