1880s Autograph Album of Helen Hazlett Payson, who was a patient at the Hospital for Incurables at the Bronx, New York

1880s autograph album that originally belonged to Helen Hazlett Payson at Fordham in the Bronx, New York, but was later taken over by Julia Virginia Painter, who signed many pages and doodled on others, including pages earlier used by signers.

The album was presented to Helen H. Payson, or "Nellie", by Harry Gale at Fordham, New York, at Christmas 1886.

Harry signed another page on Christmas Day in 1886, near the end of the album.

The album is approximately 8-1/4" x 7-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 50 people, some of whom wrote on more than one page; additionally there are many pages of writing that are unsigned.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Several of the signers mentioned the initials H. F. I, which I had originally thought was an educational institute or institution but came to realize, sadly, was the Home for Incurables, which eventually became St. Barnabas Hospital, founded in the West Farms area of the Bronx in 1866.

Mary E. Ford of Fordham, New York, signed a page on March 24, 1887 and included H. F. I.

Emily Walls signed at H. F. I. Hotel on December 7, 1896.

Cullen B. Howe signed at H. F. I. Club at Fordham, New York, on January 31, 1887.

Max Rastner or Max Kastner signed a page at H. F. I. on September 3, 1887.

Two doctors signed pages in Nellie's album.  J. V. Smith, M.D., signed a page on March 30, 1894.

Guy H. Furrell, M.D., signed a page in December 1897.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Helen Hazlett Payson, "Nellie" was born about August 1867, daughter of Rev. Edward Phillips Payson and Grace (Hazlett) Payson, who were born in Connecticut and New York, respectively.   She had at least four younger siblings.

Nellie's father came from a family of ministers.  Below, his obituary in the 1915 Obituary Record of Graduates of Yale University.

I found Nellie living at the Home for Incurables at the time of enumeration of the 1900 Census.  Thanks to the reader's comment below, we know she died on 24 October 1904 at the Bronx.   Rev. Payson died in 1913 at Tacoma, Washington, and Grace (Hazlett) Payson died at East Orange, New Jersey, in 1917.

If you have additional information on Helen Hazlett Payson or her family, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

I'm also intrigued by how the album came to be in the possession of young Julia Virginia Painter, daughter of John W. Painter and Nellie Catherine (Fadeley) Painter of West Virginia.   Julia was born 17 November 1898 at Hall Town, West Virginia.  She would marry Robert Lyton in 1927.

Julia Virginia Painter signed many pages in the album, sometimes over a page already used, but one page was especially interesting, where she listed the members of the John William Painter Family, the George W. Painter family and the Clint Ware family.

Bessie Painter signed a page.

Maggie Mae Painter signed a page.

The inside back cover mentions Miss Della Stuart and Mr. John W. Walters.

If you have information on the Painter and Ware families, please leave a comment or contact me directly. Thanks!

1880s-1900s Autograph Album of Robert Edward Marshall of Hector, New York & Valois, New York

1880s-1900s autograph album of Robert Edward Marshall of Hector, New York, and Valois, New York.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 25 of Robert's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Robert Edward Marshall was born 29 June 1871 at North Hector, New York, or Covert, New York, the son of Freeman and Marianne Charlotte (Porter) Marshall, "Lottie", immigrants to New York from Lincolnshire, England.

Two people who expressed a relationship with Robert were siblings Edna M. Denmark and Harold Denmark, whose parents were Monroe and Addie Denmark of Elmira, New York.

Robert was educated at North Hector, New York, as evidenced by the page signed by W. H. Curtis of North Hector, New York, on January 19, 1887, who called himself Robert's schoolmate.

On 13 March 1891 in New York, Robert Edward Marshall married Fannie Hinckley, daughter of Eliel M. and Agnes Lula (Sanders) Hinckley.  Fannie was bornn 27 August 1871 at North Hector, New York.

According to the Federal Censuses, the couple lived at Hector, Dix and Watkins Glen, all in New York, and they apparently lived at Valois, New York, for a time, as their children were born there.   Robert was a house carpenter.  They had at least three children, I believe:

  1. Floretta Marshall, born 8 June 1892 at Valois, New York; died 22 September 1892 at Valois, New York
  2. Floyd David Marshall, born 26 January 1894 at Valois, New York; died in 1990
  3. Bessie Marshall, born 25 July 1896 at Valois, New York; died in 1958.
Floyd David Marshall's name appears on two pages in the album, but they were apparently signed by someone else, presumably Robert or Fannie, as Flyd would have been too young.

Someone also signed a page for Robert's daughter Bessie on April 27, 1901.

Robert Edward Marshall died in 1931 at Montour Falls, New York, and Fannie in 1970 at Watkins Glen, New York.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

The page below contains the names of children, who may have been relatives or neighbors.

Two pages contained a note referring to the death of the signer.  W. R. Welding signed a page at North Hector, New York, on February 2, 1887.  He was Postmaster William R. Welding, who died at the age of 41 on April 8, 1894.  Someone, presumably Robert, added the note: "Dead".

Frank Van Vleet of Lodi, New York, signed a page on January 21, 1887.  Someone, presumably Robert, added the note: "Dead".

When purchased, the album came with some loose pages from a more contemporary album from the 1930s.  I don't know if the two albums have a relationship or not.  The pages were addressed to a Jane/Jayne from people with surnames of Wallenstein, Manger and an undecipherable one, possibly Hardi, and a page signed by "Cousin Barbara".

List of signers:  [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • Page with children's given names: Fanny, Cora, Susie & Beanie [not sure of Beanie]
  • Otis Blaine
  • James Brogan, signed at North Hector, New York, on December 28, 1890.  Middle initial might be F or H or ?
  • Flora Clawson; shared the page with Madolene Smith
  • Thomas Connor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, signed at North Hector, New York, on December 28, 1890
  • W. H. Curtis of North Hector, New York, signed on January 19, 1887; Robert Edward Marshall's schoolmate
  • Edna M. Denmark, signed at Elmira Heights, New York, on August 16, 1903; Robert Edward Marshall's cousin
  • Harold Denmark, inscribed to "Uncle Robert... from your little cousin"

  • R. E. Marshall of North Hector, New York; Robert Edward Marshall, album owner
  • Master Floyd Marshall of North Hector, New York, signed on March 4, 1899.  Floyd David Marshall, son of album owner Robert Edward Marshall.  It's doubtful that Floyd signed this page himself, as he was born in 1894.  He, or someone for him, signed another page as well
  • Bessie Marshall, signed on April 27, 1901; Robert Edward Marshall's daughter Bessie Marshall
  • Fred Rhodes of Lodi, New York, signed on January 30, 1889

  • Bert Townsend of North Hector, New York, signed on January 21, 1887
  • Frank Van Vleet of Lodi, New York, signed on January 21, 1887.  Someone, presumably album owner Robert Edward Marshall, wrote: "Dead"
  • W. R. Welding, signed at North Hector, New York, on February 2, 1887; he was William R. Welding, Postmaster.  Someone, presumably Robert E. Marshall, wrote on the page: "Dead".  I found an obituary indicating that W. R. Welding died on April 8, 1894, at age 41

1880s Autograph Album of Franklin Delos Carpenter, Jr., of Homer, New York

1880s autograph album of Franklin Delos Carpenter, "Frankie", of Homer, New York.

I assume the page above was signed by Frankie, but it could have been his father.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 4-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 18 of Frankie's relatives, friends and teachers.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Franklin Delos Carpenter, Jr., was born 18 August 1870 in New York, the son of Franklin Delos Carpenter and Sallie Matilda (Buchanan) Carpenter.

About 1891, Frank Delos Carpenter, Jr., married Nellie J. Crampton.  I don't know if they ever had children.  There were none listed with them at the time of Census enumerations.  Nellie died in 1940 and Nellie in 1947.

Frankie's mother, Sallie Matilda (Buchanan) Carpenter signed a page at Homer, New York, on April 9, 1887.

Frankie's Auntie of 1747 Michigan Street, Buffalo, New York, signed a page on October 14, 1888.  Two other people mentioned that address: Walter R. Lovejoy and W. E. Brown.

Two people called themselves Frankie's cousin.  I. H. Rindge of Norwich [presumably New York] signed a page on July 19, 1886.

Alice C. Steele of Bridgewater, New York, signed a page on February 5, 1886.

Alice's husband Oliver Wolcott Steele and daughter Flora Electra Steele also signed pages in February 1886.

Two of Frankie's teachers signed pages.  Mrs. H. M. Sheldon signed at Homer, New York, on April 24, 1884.

Teacher C. A. Webb signed a page.  She may have been Cynthia A. Webb, wife of Dr. Sumner C. Webb.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Jessie Estella Parker of New Haven, Michigan

1880s autograph album of Jessie Estella Parker, "Stella", of New Haven, Michigan.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 70 of Stella's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Jessie Estella Parker was born 21 August 1864 at Columbus, Michigan, the daughter of John Sanford Parker and Helen Augusta (Farrar) Parker.  Her parents signed pages in her album.  John S. Parker signed his page at New Haven, Michigan on January 2, 1881.

Helen Augusta (Farrar) Parker of New Haven, Michigan, signed a page on March 26, 1880.

Helen's parents, Manson Farrar and Sybil (Smith) Farrar, signed facing pages, Sybil at Lenox, Michigan, on December 21, 1880.

Stella's sister Delia Sybil Parker signed two pages, one at New Haven, Michigan, on February 8, 1892.

Stella's mother's brother, Uriel S. Farrar, his wife Alice M. (Chapman) Farrar and their daughter Mary Farrar of Detroit Junction, Michigan, signed a page on July 8, 1881.

On 22 February 1894 in Macomb County, Michigan, Jessie Estella Parker married Walter S. Lowell, son of Henry and Sarah (Warwick) Lowell.   Walter was born 3 October 1865 at New Haven, Michigan.

Stella and Walter farmed at Columbus Township, Michigan.  Later, they lived at Lenox, Michigan, where Walter worked as a hardware salesman, and then at Richmond, Michigan.

They had, I believe, four children:
  1. Jessie Lowell, born 10 June 1895 at Columbus, Michigan
  2. Mary Lowell, born 4 April 1896 at Columbus, Michigan
  3. Smith E. Lowell, born 23 March 1899 at Columbus, Michigan
  4. Manson P. Lowell, born 28 February 1901 at Lenox, Michigan
Jessie Estella (Parker) Lowell and her husband Walter S. Lowell died about a month apart from each other in 1960, having outlived their son Manson, who died in 1937.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

A few of the pages:

If you can decipher the page below, please leave a comment.  The name might be Benjamin Eshor.  There was a Chicago lawyer by the name of Edward Benjamin Esher.  However, The Genalogue found references to a Benjamin Eshos of Persia who was giving lectures in the United States during the time frame of the album.  The Fort Wayne Daily Gazette of Indiana reported in July 1881 that Eshos had given a lecture on the "Manners and Customs of Persia".  Perhaps Stella had attended one of his lectures or had met him some other way.  He died at Chicago, Illinois, on 4 April 1896.

Sarah F. Kenfield, M.D., of Richmond, Michigan signed a page on December 18, 1880.

One page is dated February 11, 1891, the day after a Prohibition Convention was held at New Haven, Michigan.

One page had a sad note, probably written by Stella herself, giving the date of death of Mary Lefurgey, who died January 8, 1881.

The last two signed pages in the album were signed by a man whose name I believe was M. A. Peeso or M. O. Peeso, who was apparently affiliated with the Hubbard Voice Company of New York.

List of signers:  [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Lottie W. Caswell of Lakeville, Massachusetts

1880s/1890s autograph album of Lottie W. Caswell of Lakeville, Massachusetts.  Many of the signers appear to have been Lottie's schoolmates, perhaps at a post-secondary institution.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 100 of Lottie's friends, schoolmates and relatives.   An alphabetical list of the students appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Charlotte W. Caswell was born 7 June 1863 at Lakeville, Massachusetts, the daughter of Horatio Leonard Caswell and Sarah (Caswell) Caswell.

Some of the signers mentioned initials, B.S.S.W., that might have referred to a school they attended, presumably with Lottie.  For instance, Julia Allen of East Freetown, Massachusetts, signed a page at Middleboro, Massachusetts, on April 3, 1883, and included B.S.S.W.

Whether Lottie ever used her education in a profession or not, I don't know.  The 1900 Census of Lakeville, Massachusetts, listed hr as living with her parents, with no occupation.

Several people with the surname Caswell signed pages in Lottie's album.  Some were perhaps her cousins.  Winnie Caswell of Lakeville, Massachusetts, signed a page on April 14, 1884.

Annie C. Caswell of Middleborough, Massachusetts, signed a page on April 15, 1883.

Bennie W. Caswell signed a page on November 27, 1881.

On 28 July 1901 at Lakeville, Massachusetts, Charlotte W. Caswell, "Lottie", became the third wife of Bowers L. Haskins, son of Franklin Haskins and Eliza Reed (Lothrop) Haskins.  His previous wives were Mary Eliza (Caswell) Haskins, with whom he had a daughter Nettie F. Haskins, born in 1872, and Abbie G. Dill.  I don't believe that Lottie had any children of her own.

Bowers died in 1928, and Lottie in 1943.
