1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Sophia Bishop Kent of Rhode Island and Washington, D.C.

1870s and 1880s autograph album of Sophia Bishop Kent of Rhode Island, and, later, a teacher at the Daniel Webster School at Washington, D.C.

Sophia added a note in pencil to the page above to indicate that the page was designed and executed by Solon Kelley, who later signed a page in her album as S. C. Kelley, on 21 June 1878.  I wouldn't have made the connection, except that Sophia wrote "Solon" in pencil.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the autographs of 98 people, including Sophia herself, her classmates at Normal School, her students at the Daniel Webster School in Washington, D.C., and others.

Most people used an entire page to write their sentiments, but three pages contain the signatures of multiple students at the "Webster School".  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Sophia Bishop Kent, "Sophie" was born 16 January 1860 at Lippitt, Rhode Island, the daughter of John Remington Kent and Hannah Aldrich (Yeaw) Kent, who were born at Johnstown, Rhode Island, and Scituate, Rhode Island, respectively.

Sophie's paternal grandparents were Samuel and Susan B. (Remington) Kent.  Her maternal grandparents were George and Sophia (Bishop) Yeaw.

Some of the signers in Sophie's album mentioned the Normal School.  I'm not exactly sure where this was, as I found that a reference online that the Normal School at Providence was dedicated in 1879.  The signatures are dated 1878, and I believe the signers, including Sophia, were from the Class of 1878, so either the school started at Providence earlier than 1879, or Sophia and the others attended Normal School at a different location.

Alice A. Potter of Cranston, Rhode Island, signed at page at the Normal School at Providence, also on 13 June 1878.

After graduating from Normal School, Sophia started her teaching career.  In the 1880 Census of Warwick, Rhode Island, she was living at home and working as a teacher.

At some point after the Census enumeration, Sophia moved to Washington, D. C.  Below is the image of a page signed in June 1885 by multiple students; Sophia penciled in a notation that the students were from her first class at "The Webster", which was the Daniel Webster School.

I found a newspaper article [scroll down to the center bottom] from the Washington Herald issue of 15 May 1908 that indicated that Sophie received a master of laws degree from the Washington College of Law.

By 1920, Sophie was working as a school principal.  The last record of Sophie that I found was her name on a New York Passenger list where she was returning from a trip to Bermuda in 1932.  An online tree has her death in Rhode Island in 1957, but I didn't find that record myself.

If you have corrections to the information above, or additional information on Sophie or any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Florence Perry signed a page at Washington, D.C., on 8 June 1885 and drew a cute sketch.

C. Fontaine signed a page at Washington, D.C., on 25 February 1888, entirely in French.

Students from the Classes of 1887 and 1889 at the Daniel Webster School in Washington, D.C., signed a group page.

Autograph Album of Susie L. Champlin with autographed pages of Class of 1889 of East Greenwich Academy in East Greenwich, Rhode Island

[Note: A reader has provided much information on the owner of this album, Susan Lena Champlin, daughter of John M. Champlin and Lucy May (Chesebro) Champlin.  Please scroll down to the comments section.]

1880s autograph album that belonged to Susie L. Champlin, who was a student at East Greenwich Academy, presumably in the Class of 1889, at East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

Susie signed two pages at the beginning of the album.

The album is 7" x 4-1/4" with puffy red velvet covers and a metal piece forming the word "Album".  An alphabetical list of the 68 people who signed pages in the album, including Susie herself, her classmates and friends, appears at the end of this post.

Two other people named Champlin signed pages in Susie's album.  M. Frances Champlin of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, signed a page in 1889 and noted that it was "Inauguration Day - Harrison and Morton" [Pres. Benjamin Harrison and Vice President Levi P. Morton].

J. L. Champlin of Lyme, Connecticut, signed a page on 15 March 1889.  [With information from the reader, I'm guessing that that he was John Latham Champlin, brother of the album owner Susan Lena Champlin.]

Some of the signers indicated what might have been societies they had joined, such as "Philo", "Adelphian" and "Aletheon [notice that M. Frances Champlin, who page appears above, was an "Aletheon"].

Arthur Baker of Willimantic, Connecticut, a "Philo", signed a page at East Greenwich Academy in 1889.

Alice Cary Weeks, an "Aletheon", of The Weirs, New Hampshire, at East Greenwich Academy on 5 February 1889.

Harry Beekman, an "Adelphian", of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, signed a page.

If you have information on Susie L. Champlin or any other signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Autograph Album/Mini Scrapbook of Fuller, Snow & Dean Families of Maine and Lawrence, Massachusetts

This interesting autograph album appears to have been passed to a succeeding generation, as well as having done double duty as a scrapbook.

I believe it first belonged to Julia Adelia Fuller and was then passed to her children, perhaps Clarence, as one of the later autographs is inscribed to Clarence, from a Clarence.  This was either an Uncle Clarence Dean or perhaps young Clarence Dean to his older self, as it contains a humerous glimpse into the future.

The album contains a four page prospectus for a work entitled The Snow Family History, 1623-1939by William B. Snow, whose address was 75 Dexter Street, Malden, Massachusetts.  Julia Adelia Fuller was the daughter of Asa Coombs Fuller and Mary Jane (Snow) Fuller.  Below is the first of the four pages.

The album also contains a single page with a photograph of William Hyslop Fuller, who apparently wrote a genealogy of the Fuller family and was advertising prints of his photographs of family members.

The earliest autographs are from the early 1880s.  The latest item might be the Snow genealogy prospectus.

The album is approximately 7" x 4" and contains 17 autographs in addition to ephemera and photographs.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Julia Adelia Fuller was born 26 January 1855 at Thomaston, Maine, daughter of Asa Coombs Fuller and his first wife Mary Jane (Snow) Fuller.   After Mary Jane's death, Asa married Mary Jane's younger sister Anna Baxter Snow.

Tucked in the album, a carte de visite of Asa Coombs Fuller:

Julia's paternal grandparents were Samuel and Nancy (Hey or Hay) Fuller.  Her maternal grandparents were Elisha and Mary (Sawtelle or Sartelle) Snow.

About 1876, Julia Adelia Fuller married John R. Dean, son of Thomas and Margaret (Moore) Dean.  They raised a family of four children at Lawrence, Massachusetts:

  • Clarence William Dean, born 6 October 1882.  One of the autographs in the album was inscribed to him, possibly by himself; married Carolyn Fellows

1880s Autograph Album of Elsie Rhoda Sampson of Manchester, Maine

1880s autograph album of Elsie Rhoda Sampson of Manchester, Maine.  I believe her birth name was Alzira Rhoda Sampson.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains pages signed by 47 of Elsie's relatives and friends, many of whom had moved to California.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

See also a post that features the autograph album given to Otis J. and Carrie R. (Pease) Foster by their Pond Road, Manchester, Maine, neighbors.  Otis and Carrie signed pages in this album.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Alzira Rhoda Sampson was born 4 October 1853 at Manchester, Maine, the daughter of Jacob Sampson and his second wife Eliza (possibly Goddard) Sampson.

Jacob Sampson was born 27 July 1796 at Greene, Maine, son of Joseph and Hannah (Gurney) Sampson.  Jacob's first wife was Ruth Winslow Collins, whom he married on 9 October 1826.  Jacob and Ruth had, I believe, five children, some of whom signed pages in Elsie's album.

Ruth Winslow (Collins) Sampson died at some point after the birth of her last child in November 1842.  Jacob married Elsie's mother, Eliza Goddard, on 7 December 1845 at Hallowell.

Eliza (Goddard) Sampson's parents may have been James and Lydia (Estes) Goddard, but I haven't verified that yet.  She may have had a first marriage to a Mr. Goddard.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in.

On 1 November 1887 at Nashua, New Hampshire, Elsie Rhoda Sampson became the fourth wife of Joseph Emery Adams, son of William and Lucinda (Hall) Adams.  One of Joseph's previous wives was Elsie's older half sister Irena Jane Sampson.

Elsie and Joseph were at Worcester, Massachusetts, by the time of the 1900 Census; they were still there by 1920.  They had a daughter, Clara Evelyn Adams, born 21 May 1895 at Vineland, New Jersey.  Joseph was a machinist.

Elsie apparently made a trip west to see her half siblings in the fall of 1883, where the Sampson men were engaged in shingle manufacturing.  Her older half brother George Lyman Sampson and his wife Nellie signed facing pages in her album while they were living at Redwood City, California in October 1883.

Elsie's older half sister Julia E. Sampson signed a page at Oakland, California in October 1883 while she was living at San Francisco.

Nellie's older half brother George Winslow Sampson signed a page at Redwood City, California, in October 1883.  His wife Lizzie signed the facing page.

If other signers mentioned a family relationship to Elsie, the relationship is noted in the list of signers below.

If you have corrections to the information above, or information on Elsie's family or any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Maggie, possibly Maggie Young, of New York and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania area

1880s autograph album that may have belonged to a Maggie, perhaps from the Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania area.  She may have been Maggie Young.

Clues to the owner's identity:

  1. One inscription mentions the name Maggie.
  2. Many of the signers in 1884 mentioned a Normal College, with some mentioning the initials N.Y.
  3. On a page shared by multiple people at Normal College in 1884, one of the signers was Maggie Young, which, granted, may be a coincidence.
  4. Later signers gave East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, as a residence.
  5. Signer Alan Young of New York City, called himself a nephew.

The album is a large one, approximately 8-1/2" 7" and is missing its outer spine and has a few loose pages.  Four pages contain multiple signatures; three of the pages have names arranged in a geometric design.  All in all, 60 people signed pages in Maggie's album.

The first autographed page in the album was signed by M. Dellevie, who mentioned Maggie in his or her sentiments, inscribed on 27 August 1887.

An Otto Dellevie signed the first page in the album, shown below.

As mentioned above, Alan Young of New York City signed a page on 24 December 1885.  Alan called himself the owner's nephew.

Below, the page of multiple signatures of students from Normal College in 1884, with a Maggie Young being one of them:

The album is interspersed with plate-like pages bearing illustrations of flowers.  George B. Martin chose one for his inscription, signed on 17 August 1884.

If you have a theory as to the identity of the album owner, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
