1870s Autograph Album of Annie E. Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin

1870s autograph album of Annie Eliza Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin.

The album is approximately 4" x 3" and contains nearly 70 pages signed by relatives and friends.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Ann Eliza Carlyle was born about July 1859, daughter of Adam and Catherine Eliza (Cook) Carlyle, who were born at Forbeck Hill in Middlebie Parish, Scotland, and North Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada respectively.

Much of the information I found about the family is contained in the Biographical History of LaCrosse, Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties, Wisconsin, published in 1892.

Adam Carlyle, born 15 February 1825, came to Cornwall, Ontario, with his family in 1839, when he was about age fourteen.  He later moved to Williamsburg, Ontario, where he met and married Catherine Eliza Cook, daughter of John M. and Catherine (Hess) Cook.  She was born 18 April 1828 at North Williamsburg, Ontario.

About 1856, Adam and Catherine and their two children moved to DeSoto, Wisconsin.  They would go on to have, I think, six more children at DeSoto, one of whom was Annie, owner of the autograph album.

The page below was signed by Annie's father, though I can't make out the word he used for his first name.

Other Carlyle family members also signed pages in Annie's album.

Her oldest brother, Walter John Carlyle, who became a prominent Wisconsin figure, signed a page in 1879, assuming he is the W. J. Carlyle below.

Annie's sister Catherine Jane "Jennie" Carlyle signed a page in 1877.  Jennie was by then married to George Spangler.

Another of Annie's sisters signed a page in 1877.  She referred to Annie as Temperance and herself as Charity.

One of the last entries in the album appears to be a poem about Annie's impending move to Nebraska and possible marriage.  It was signed by, I think, by "7 Bub".  From what I could tell, Annie never married, or if she did, she took her maiden name back.

I didn't find a record of Annie in Nebraska, but I believe she is the Annie who was living at Huron, South Dakota, at the time of the 1910 Census.

She lived past the time that the 1940 Census of Plymouth, Wisconsin was enumerated.  She was then living with Vera and Clara Carlyle and was designated as an aunt in the household.

If you have corrections to the information above or additional information on Annie and her family and any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Katie E. Brainerd of Boynton, Quebec in Eastern Townships

Small autograph album, approximately 3-3/4" x 2-1/2", that includes 27 pages signed by relatives and friends of owner Katie Elizabeth Brainerd, or Katie Elsie Brainerd, of Boynton, Quebec, in the Eastern Townships, or Cantons-de-l'Est.

I'm not sure Boynton still exists as a legal entity, but it's either a part of or in the area of Stanstead, near the Vermont border.

The album was presented to Katie in 1883 by a Jennie, who was possibly Jennie Rose Brainerd, Katie's older sister.

Another Jennie, Jennie Gregory, signed a page some years later in 1890, but the handwriting appears different from that on the presentation page.

Katie Elizabeth Brainerd was born 9 May 1876 at Boynton, Quebec, the daughter of Israel Brown Brainerd and wife Naomi (Quimby) Brainerd, both natives of Stanstead, Quebec.

Katie's paternal grandparents were Israel and Rosamond (Brown) Brainerd.  Her maternal grandparents were John Moore Quimby and Naomi (Moulton) Quimby.

Katie married Carlos Gordon Mosher, son of John and Mary Corilla (Mosher) Mosher.  Katie and Carlos had at least four children.  Katie died in 1960, and Carlos in 1963.

I believe the page below was signed by Carlos Gordon Mosher in 1889, long before he and Katie were married.

And possibly this page as well.

Katie's older sister Hattie Ethel Brainerd signed a page in her album in 1884.

An Emma signed a page in 1888.  Emma may have been Emma Naomi Brainerd, Katie's older sister.

Two signers indicated that Katie was their cousin.  Cousin Lizzie Brown signed a page.

Katie's cousin Ward Leon Brainerd signed a page.  He was born 3 February 1881 at Stanstead, Quebec, son of Timothy Erban Brainerd and Nellie Victoria (Ticehurst) Brainerd.  He married Eva Laura Bridgette and had at least two children.

Some other signers in the Katie's album were surnamed Ticehurst.  Estella A. Ticehurst signed a page in 1886.

Mrs. E. A. Ticehurst signed a page in 1884.

Luther Ticehurst signed a page in 1889.

In addition to Lizzie Brown above, some other people surnamed Brown, the maiden name of Katie's paternal grandmother, signed pages in her album.

Susie Brown of Boynton, Quebec, signed a page.

Joe Brow or Joe Brown of Sturnsville signed a page in 1889.

Ruth M. Brown of Smiths Mills, Quebec, signed a page.

Two of Katie's teachers signed pages in her album.  Susie P. Copp of Smiths Mills, Quebec, signed a page.

E. Chamberlin of DeLand, Illinois, signed a page, while apparently teaching in the Stanstead, Quebec, area.

Complete list of signers, in alphabetical order by surname [not necessarily alphabetical by given name within a particular surname]:

  • Clara of Smith's Mills, 1885; surname looks to be *aid
  • Emma of Boynton, Quebec, 1888; could be Emma Naomi Brainerd, Katie's older sister
  • Hattie, 1884; Katie's older sister Hattie Ethel Brainerd
  • Jennie, album presenter; most likely Jennie Rose Brainerd, Katie's older sister; but possibly Jennie Gregory who signed another page
  • Katie E. Brainerd of Eastern Townships, Quebec; album owner
  • Ward L. Brainerd; Katie's cousin
  • Lizzie Brown; Katie's cousin
  • Susie Brown of Boynton, Quebec
  • Ida G. Camber of Boynton, Quebec, 1887
  • Susie P. Copp of Smith's Mills, Quebec
  • Winnie Eaton of Smith's Mills, Quebec, 1892
  • Alma L. Gardyne
  • Chloe Gove of Smith Mills, Quebec
  • Addie L. Gregory of Boynton, Quebec, 1889
  • Jennie Gregory of Boynton, Quebec, 1890
  • Caroline L. Ives of Magog, Quebec, 1883
  • Edward Longeway of Smith's Mills, Quebec, 1885
  • Morris F. Longeway of Stanstead, Quebec, 1886
  • Ellen McDermott of Magog, Quebec, 1889
  • ? Mosher; first name could be Carl, as in Carlos Gordon Mosher, Katie's future husband
  • C. G. Mosher, 1889; this page was likely also signed by Carlos Gordon Mosher, Katie's future husband
  • Estella A. Tichurst, 1886
  • Mrs. E. A. Ticehurst, 1884
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above or insights on Katie, her family or any of the signers, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s/1890 Autograph Album of Mary Edith Shuff of Jacksonville, Illinois

1880s/1890 autograph album of Mary Edith Shuff of Jacksonville, Illinois.  A previous post featured the 1880s/1890s autograph album of her younger sister Estella May Shuff.  Both girls were students at the Ebenezer School at Jacksonville.

The album was presented to Mary Edith Shuff at Christmas 1882 by her aunt and uncle Charles and Hattie (Johnson) Jeffries of Jacksonville.  Hattie was a sister to Mary Edith's mother Mary Caroline (Johnson) Shuff.

The album is approximately 3-1/2" x 2-1/2" and contains 27 pages signed by relatives and friends.

Mary Edith Shuff was born about August 1875 in Morgan County, Illinois, daughter of Illinois natives Stephen Oliver Shuff and Mary Caroline (Johnson) Shuff.

Mary Edith married Albert E. Richardson about 12 October 1899.   They had at least one child.  Mary Edith (Shuff) Richardson died in 1950.

Two of Mary Edith's teachers signed pages in her album.

Teacher Nannie R. Hurst signed a page in 1885.

Teacher S. H. McCausland of Literberry, Illinois, signed a page in 1885.

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Estella May Shuff, a student at Ebenezer School, Jacksonville, Illinois

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Estella, "Stella", who was a student at the Ebenezer School at Jacksonville, Illinois.  The album was found with another one that belonged to Mary Edith Shuff, who had a sister named Estella May Shuff.

See another post that features Mary Edith Shuff's album.  It includes pages signed by the girls' parents, Stephen Oliver Shuff and Mary Caroline (Johnson) Shuff and other relatives.

Estella's album is approximately 4-1/4" x 3" and contains 18 pages signed by relatives and friends.

The presentation page, below, is very hard to make out; the image below is enhanced.  The presenter might have been Aunt or Augusta or another name beginning with A.  The word after the word beginning with A appears to start with a C.  If you can get more out of the text, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

One signer near the front of the album was Uncle Charlie J., who signed a page in 1889.  Stella's aunt, Hattie Jeffries, signed a page in  1889.

From checking online, I saw that Hattie (nee Harriet Johnson) Jeffries was the wife of Charles Jeffries of Jacksonville, Illinois, so I'm guessing that Uncle Charlie J. was Charles Jeffries.

Hattie (Johnson) Jeffries had a sister Mary Caroline Johnson who married Stephen Oliver Shuff.  They became the parents of Mary Edith Shuff, born in 1875, and album owner Estella May Shuff, born in 1881.

Stella's teacher S. H. McCausland signed a page.

Only one signer in the album mentioned Jacksonville, Illinois, but it was enough to find evidence of an Ebenezer School at Jacksonville and to establish that many of the signers lived at Jacksonville, Illinois.

That signer was Lizzie D. Blackburn of Jacksonville, Illinois, Stella's schoolmate at Ebenezer School.

Other people with the surname Blackburn signed pages as well: Estelle, Fannie and Ella, who I assume were siblings or cousins of Lizzie D. Blackburn.

Estelle Blackburn signed a page in 1890.

Fannie Blackburn signed a page in 1890 while she was a student at Ebenezer School.

Schoolmate Ella Blackburn signed a page in 1891.

Siblings Ernest Walter, George Walter and Julia Walter signed pages in Stella's album.

Ernest Walter signed a page in 1890 when he was ten years old.

George Walter signed a page, but he didn't date it.

Julia Walter also signed an undated page.

Estella May Shuff was born 2 February 1881 in Morgan County, Illinois, daughter of Illinois natives Stephen Oliver Shuff and Mary Caroline (Johnson) Shuff.

Estella married James Francis Mahon in 1916 and had at least one child.  She died in 1962.
