1880s Autograph Album of Mary C. Mullen of Glen Hope, Pennsylvania

1880s autograph album of Mary C. Mullen of Glen Hope, Pennsylvania.

It appears that the album was presented to Mary by her uncle, John M. Wright, with whom she was living at the time of the enumeration of the 1880 Census.

It's entitled the Acadian Album and has beautiful illustrations from Longfellow's "Evangeline" scattered throughout.  [more images below and near the end of this post]

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" inches and contains 40 pages signed by Mary's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

John M. Wright, son of William B. and Ann (Keagy) Wright, was born at Newcastle, Delaware on 18 September 1807 and moved with his family to Glen Hope, Pennsylvania, in his youth.  He became a noted teacher, Clearfield County Treasurer and Justice of the Peace.

Late in his life, John married Mary Mullen, daughter of William and Jane (Crone) Mullen.  Mary was born in County Armagh, Ireland on 19 July 1834.

Mary may have had a brother William who married Sophia Keagy.  Their daughter Ella Mullen, who indicated she was Mary C. Mullen's cousin, signed a page in the album.

Was there a sibling of Mary (Mullen) Wright, other than William Mullen, who may have died or been in dire straits and had to place little Mary C. Mullen in Mary (Mullen) Wright's care?  Hopefully a reader will clear up the mystery.

Helen M. Anderson [at least I think her first name was Helen] signed a page at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, on 31 August 1887.  She also indicated that she was Mary C. Mullen's cousin.  It's tempting, but risky, to assume that Helen's middle initial stood for her maiden name Mullen.

If you can provide more information on Mary C. Mullen or any of the signers mentioned below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album Presented to Minnie M. Penrod of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, upon her move to California

1880s autograph album that was presented to Minnie M. Penrod by her friends at Edinboro, Pennsylvania, as she prepared to move to California.

The album is approximately 8" x 5" with puffy velour covers and contains 105 pages of the sentiments of Minnie's relatives, classmates and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Minnie M. Penrod was born 1 May 1867 at Edinboro, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Eli Abraham Penrod and Martha Ann (Proud) Penrod, who were born at Chippewa, Canada, and Edinboro, Pennsylvania, respectively.

Minnie's paternal grandparents were William and Laura (Taylor) Penrod, who emigrated from Great Britain to Canada.  Her maternal grandparents were William and Laura (Davis) Proud, who were born in England and Pennsylvania, respectively.

A couple of the signers indicated they were students at N.W.S.N.S., which I think stood for Northwest State Normal School, located at Edinboro.  Minnie may have been a student there as well.

At some point in late 1886 or in 1887, Minnie and her family relocated to Petaluma, California.  I'd be interested in knowing what motivated them to move west.

About 1896, Minnie married Ira Burnside Raymond, son of Edgar and Sarah A. (Smith) Raymond, who were both Iowa natives.  Ira was born 30 May 1867 in Iowa.

The couple raised at least two children, daughters Ethel and Edith, at Petaluma, where they operated a dry goods store.  I found a montage of photographs of Minnie, Ira and their daughters here.

Minnie died in 1934, and Ira in 1943.

Two signers in the album indicated they were Minnie's cousins.  They were sisters Cynthia (Beam) Richardson and Georgie (Beam) Dunn of Ontario, Canada.  Their mother was Mary Ann Taylor, who may have been a sister or other relative of Minnie's paternal grandmother Laura (Taylor) Penrod.

Cynthia Richardson of Port Colborne, Ontario signed her page in August 1886.

Georgie Dunn of Ridgeway, Ontario, signed her page on 5 August 1886.

Elnora Lawrence of Conneautville, Pennsylvania signed a page on 29 June 1886 at N.W.S.N.S., which was Northwest State Normal School, located at Edinboro, Pennsylvania.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1890s Autograph Album of Willie, likely William H. Clees, of Montoursville, Pennsylvania

1890s autograph album that belonged to a Willie of Montoursville, Pennsylvania.  From clues in the album, I believe he was William H. Clees.

The album is approximately 6-1/4" x 4" and contains 30 pages signed by Willie's relatives, schoolmates, teachers and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome]

Assuming that I have the correct Willie, William H. Clees was born about 1876, possibly at Fairfield, Pennsylvania, the son of Charles and Hannah (Heist) Clees, who were both natives of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Willie's paternal grandparents were Frederick J. and Hannah (OBourne) Clees.  His maternal grandparents were John and Christianna Heist.

On 6 March 1909 at Montoursville, Pennsylvania, William married Ora Amelia Northrup, daughter of Fanton Llwellyn Northrup and Ida Jane (Burt) Northrup.  She was born, I think, on 6 March 1884.

William and Ora raised a family of at least two children at Montoursville, Pennsylvania.  They lost their son in the waning days of World War II, possibly in the Battle of the Bulge.

Five signers indicated on the pages that they were Willie's cousin.  Siblings Mary, Maggie and Emma Hofer of DuBoisville, Pennsylvania, signed pages.  They were the daughters of Gottfried Frederick Hofer and Catherine "Katie" (Heist) Hofer.

Cousin Ida M. Clees signed a page.  She was the daughter of John Henry Clees and Sarah J. (Tomlinson) Clees.

Cousin Alice Kuemmerle signed a page on 15 January 1892.  She was the daughter of Gottlieb and Christiana Kuemmerle.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s and 1890s Autograph Album with Signers from New Hampshire and Vermont

[Note: be sure to read the reader's comment of 15 March 2013, which provides some compelling clues toward the album owner's identity and a link to her photograph.]

1880s and 1890s autograph album with signers mostly from New Hampshire and Vermont.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 36 signed pages.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

I purchased the album several years ago from a seller who assumed that the original owner was the first signer, Abbie E. Parker of Wentworth, New Hampshire.  Since one or more of the first pages is missing, including the title page, however, it's very possible that Abbie was not the owner.

Two signers were sisters Addie Viola Jewell and Mina L. Jewell of West Newbury, Vermont, who signed separate pages on 15 January 1891.  They indicated that they were cousins to the album owner.  Additionally, Addie indicated that she and the owner were schoolmates, so they were about the same age.

Cousin Myra L. Burbeck of Danvers, Massachusetts, signed a page on 22 July 1892.

Perhaps a reader who figures out the album owner's identity will leave a comment or contact me directly.

Two people identified themselves as the album owner's teacher.  Teacher Carrie E. Kassen of South Ryegate, Vermont, signed a page on 21 May 1890.

1880s Autograph Album of Clara J. Laird of Chelsea, Vermont

Autograph album that was presented to Clara J. Laird of Chelsea, Vermont by her teacher E. F. N. in February of 1882.

Interestingly, signer Ella F. Norris had what appears to be identical handwriting to that on the page above.  She inscribed her page at Hyde Park, Massachusetts, on 17 February 1882.

The album is a small one, approximately 4" x 2-3/4" and contains 27 pages of sentiments signed by Clara's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Clara J. Laird was born 13 April 1871 at Chelsea, Vermont, the daughter of Robert William Laird and Ellen Sarah (Bugbee) Laird, who were born in Ireland and at Chelsea, Vermont, respectively.

Clara's father, Robert William Laird, signed a page in her autograph album on 6 October 1889.

Her mother, Ellen Sarah (Bugbee) Laird, signed a page on 4 March 1883 and affixed a Victorian scrap.

Clara's sister, Katie E. Laird of Chelsea, Vermont, signed a page on 13 April 1885 and affixed a Victorian scrap.

Clara's Aunt Emma R. Bugbee signed a page on 26 August 1887.

Several people who indicated they were Clara's cousins signed pages, as you will note in the list below.  These were John M. Comstock; second cousin Hattie Dearborn of Chelsea, Vermont; Lilla A. Goodwin of North Weare, New Hampshire.  I'm fairly sure there were other cousins who didn't indicate a relationship.

On 10 June 1900 at Williamstown, Vermont, Clara married Arthur Elbert Stearns, son of Warren Everett Stearns and Fannie Adeline (Dickerman) Stearns.  Arthur was born 13 May 1873 at Chelsea, Vermont.

Arthur and Clara raised a family of, I believe, four children on their farms at Williamstown, Vermont, and, later, Royalton, Vermont.

Their daughter Muriel Stearns apparently found the album in 1920 and signed her name in it.

Clara died in 1940, and Arthur in 1960.

1890s Autograph Album of Mary Louise Elliott of East Barrington, New Hampshire; mentions The Sunny Bank Home at Watertown, Massachusetts

The last page in this 1890s autograph album is inscribed by Mrs. G. B. Haley on 25 December 1891 to Mary Louise Elliott of East Barrington, New Hampshire, so I'm assuming this was a Christmas present to Mary.

The album contains several signatures of people who signed at "Sunny Bank", which was the Sunny Bank Home for women and children at Watertown, Massachusetts.

The Sunny Bank Home was founded in 1887 for needy women and children undergoing medical and surgical treatment and recuperation, mainly through the efforts of Gouldsboro, Maine native  Dr. Almena Jane "Minnie" (Guptill) Baker Flint.

Read an article published in the Boston Evening Transcript issue of 19 February 1895 about the founding and purpose of the Sunny Bank Home here and an earlier article in the Boston Evening Transcript, issue of 6 July 1888.

Annie Patrick of West Somerville, Massachusetts, inscribed a page on 8 November 1895 at Sunny Bank in Watertown, Massachusetts.

I don't know if the signers who mentioned Sunny Bank were patients at the Home or if they were there for fund raising events, or both.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/2" and contains pages signed by 33 of Mary's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

A few sample pages:

Eva Hale Crosby of East Barrington, New Hampshire, signed a page on 11 December 1898.

Captain Nellie A. Price of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, signed at Dorchester, Massachusetts, on 30 November 1895.  Nellie was an officer in the Salvation Army.

Georgia E. Twombly of Madbury, New Hampshire, signed a page on 1 January 1892.  Georgia indicated that she was Mary's teacher.

Aimee B. MacMeekin of Jersey City, New Jersey, 556 Summit Avenue, signed a page on 10 July 1896.

If you have information on Mary Louise Elliott or any of the signers mentioned below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1890s/1900s Autograph Album of Leon Roy Putnam of Springfield, Vermont

1890s/1900s autograph album of Leon Roy Putnam of Springfield, Vermont.

The album is approximately 8" x 5" and contains more than 26 pages inscribed by Leon himself, his relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Leon Roy Putnam was born 6 October 1880 at Springfield, Vermont, the son of George F. and Lois J. (Rice) Putnam, who were both Springfield, Vermont, natives.

Leon's mother signed a page in his album on 28 December 1890.

On 6 October 1904 at Claremont, New Hampshire, Leon married Edith A. Roberts, daughter of James Kirkwood Roberts and Agnes (McLeod) Roberts.  Edith was born 31 March 1881 at Gardiner, Maine.

Edith's parents were married at Sherbrooke, Quebec, on 2 January 1872.  Edith's father was then working as a finisher in a paper mill, and it was perhaps his occupation that drew him and his wife to Gardiner, Maine later on.

Leon and Edith farmed at Weathersfield, Vermont; they had three children.  Leon died in 1937, and Edith in 1952.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!
