1880s Autograph Album of Rebecca Ellen Payne, "Ella", of New Castle, Indiana


1880s autograph album that belonged to Rebecca Ellen Payne, "Ella", of New Castle, Indiana.  Inscribers hailed from several Indiana towns and villages.

Ella, presumably, wrote her name and residence in the upper right corner of the title page.


The album measures approximately 6-1/4 by 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 44 of Ella's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Rebecca Ellen Payne was born March 3, 1863 in Henry County, Illinois, the daughter of Joel R. Payne and Martha C. (Hastings) Payne.  Martha inscribed a page in her daughter's album in 1885, by which time she had long been married to her second husband Dennis Kendall.


Martha's mother, Jane (Reese) Hastings, inscribed a page in 1882.


Ella's father Joel R. Payne died in 1865.  In 1867, Joel's widow Martha married widower Dennis Kendall, who had children with his first wife Rebecca Jane (Hill) Kendall.

Among the inscribers were Emma full siblings, half siblings and step siblings.  Inscribers who expressed a kinship [and there were likely more]:
  • Aunt Edith. Presumably Edith (Towell) Hastings, first wife of Seth Gordon Hastings, who was a brother to Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall.
  • A. H. Hastings; inscribed on July 11, 1882. Ella's uncle, presumably Aaron Healy Hastings, a brother to Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall. The Laura who inscribed the right facing page was presumably his wife Laura (Kinley) Hastings.
  • C. H. E. Hill; inscribed on March 15, 1885.  Ella's cousin
  • Will H. Kendall of Dublin, Indiana, in Wayne County.  He inscribed his page to "Sister".  William Harvey Kendall was Ella's stepbrother, son of Dennis Kendall and his first wife Rebecca Jane (Hill) Kendall.  Dennis Kendall was the second husband of Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall.
  • Margaretta Kendall; inscribed at Richmond, Indiana, on August 28, 1881.  Inscribed to Sister Ella.  Margaretta Kendall was Ella's stepsister, daughter of Dennis Kendall and his first wife Rebecca Jane Hill.  Dennis would later marry Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall.
  • Oliver, inscribed on 7/9/1882; Ella's brother.  He was Ella's half-brother Oliver L. Kendall, son of Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall and Martha's second husband Dennis Kendall.
  • Mary E. Kendall of Hopewell, Indiana.  Possibly Ella's stepsister Mary E. Kendall, daughter of Rebecca Jane (Hill) Kendall and Dennis Kendall, who became the second husband of Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall.
  • Joel Kendall of Cadiz, Indiana.  Presumably Ella's stepbrother Joel G. Kendall, son of Rebecca Jane (Hill) Kendall and Dennis Kimball, who became the second husband of Ella's mother Martha C. (Hastings) Payne Kendall.
  • Allie Lamb; inscribed on August 6, 1883.  Ella's cousin.
  • William H. Payne; inscribed at Cadiz, Indiana, on April 1, 1881.  Ella's brother William Hastings Payne
  • Flora Payne; inscribed on April 24, 1881.  Ella's cousin, presumably Emma Florence Payne, "Flora", daughter of Eliza Ann (Newby) Payne and John W. Payne, who was a brother to album owner Emma's father Joel R. Payne.
  • Miss Libbie Payne of Spiceland, Indiana; Ella's cousin.  Possibly Mary Lizzie Payne, daughter of Eliza Ann (Newby) and John W. Payne, who was a brother to Ella's father Joel R. Payne.   Mary Lizzie Payne died in 1882.
  • Jessie Payne of Spiceland, Indiana; inscribed on May 19, 1882.  Ella's cousin.  Possibly Jessie Fremont Payne, daughter of Eliza Ann (Newby) Payne and John W. Payne, who was a brother to Ella's father Joel R. Payne
  • Emma J. Payne of Cadiz, Indiana; inscribed there on September 3, 1884.  She was album owner Ella's full sister.
  • Charl Stafford; Ella's cousin
  • Horace Stafford of Spiceland, Indiana; inscribed on October 15, 1882.  Ella's cousin


On August 13, 1890 in Henry County, Indiana, Rebecca Ellen Payne, "Ella", married William P. Pope, son of Spencer and Elizabeth (Cecil) Pope.  William died July 12, 1901 in Stony Creek, Indiana; Ella died about 1905.
