1880s Autograph Album of Friedrich Philip Binder, "Fred", of Monee, Illinois

1880s autograph album of Frederick Philip Binder, "Fred", of Monee, Illinois.

Many inscribers added "'73" to their sentiments, possibly referring to a school at Monee, or Hayes or Tuscola.  Fred's future wife Clara Marie Kettering inscribed the last page in the album; image shown farther below.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 59 of Fred's relatives, friends and, presumably, 1873 classmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Friedrich Philip Binder, "Fred", was born, according to his gravestone and to a St. Paul's Church Burial Record, on December 5, 1859 at Chicago, Illinois, the son of Friedrich Binder and Barbara (Schneider) Binder.  Barbara inscribed the first page of inscriptions in German.

Inscribers who expressed a kinship (and there were likely others who did not):
  • Rosa; inscribed at Chicago, Illinois, on October 12, 1881.  Fred's cousin
  • F. W. Binder or H. W. Binder; inscribed at Chicago, Illinois, on February 10, 1883.  Fred's cousin
  • F. W. Binder; inscribed at Chicago, Illinois, on July 4, 1883 at 6 P.M.  Fred's cousin
  • Henry Fred Binder; inscribed at Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1881.  Album owner Fred's cousin
  • Louisa Binder; Fred's cousin

On May 14, 1885 in Will County, Illinois, Fred married Clara Marie Kettering, daughter of Adam Johann Kettering and Katharina (Wild) Kettering.  On Clara's death record, her parents names appear as Adam Kettering and Catherine (Wild) Kettering.   Clara and her brother Ferdinand Oscar Kettering inscribed pages in Fred's album.

I believe Fred and Clara had two sons.  Fred died in 1911 and Clara in 1942.  They're buried in the St. Paul Evangelical Reformed Cemetery at Monee, Illinois.

  1. Ferdinand Kettering is my Great Great Grandfather. From what I've researched, he and Clara were the first Ketterings born in America from Johann and Katharina.
