1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Julia Ann Wilkinson of New Haven, Connecticut; Before and After Marriage to Theodore Joseph Warner

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Julia Ann Wilkinson of the New Haven, Connecticut, area, before and after her 1886 marriage to Theodore Joseph Warner.

This album was acquired with a companion, the 1880s,1890s autograph album of Julia's husband Theodore Joseph Warner.   Several people inscribed pages in both albums.

Julia left an inscription in Theodore's album, so we have an example of her handwriting.

The first page present in Julia's album is the title page. It's possible that Julia's name may have been written on a now missing front end paper. Clues to her identity:
  • the companion album of Julia's future husband Theodore Joseph Warner
  • inscriptions to "Julia"
  • inscription by G. H. Wilkinson, who called himself Julia's brother
  • an inscription to "Mrs. J. A. Warner"

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 40 of Julia's relatives, in-laws and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

I'm not positive of Julia's parents, but they may have been Henry and Mary Ann Wilkinson, who were living at Chatham, Connecticut, at the time of enumeration of the 1870 Census, with children George, Julia and Harriet.  According to her grave information, Julia was born in 1864, apparently shortly after her parents and older brother George arrived in Connecticut from England.

Julia's brother George inscribed the page below in 1891:

On January 20, 1886 at West Haven, Connecticut, Julia Ann Wilkinson married Theodore Joseph Warner, son of Charles Jared Warner and Mary Ann (Oviatt) Warner.  Theodore inscribed a page in his future wife's album in 1885.

Theodore's parents and sisters also inscribed pages in the album.

Theodore and Julia had at least two children, sons George Clayton Warner, who died young, and Arthur Clifford Warner.  Theodore died in 1940 and Julia in 1952.  They're buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery at West Haven, Connecticut.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

  1. I have been researching the Clulee family and would love to see their inscriptions. Harry Clulee's middle initial is I (his middle name is Ireland).
