1860s+ Autograph Album of Harriet Naomi (Burbank) Hunt of Massachusetts and New Hampshire

Album that was presented to Hattie in 1860, presumably Harriet Naomi (Burbank) Hunt from before and after her marriage to David Franklin Hunt.  Most of the inscriptions are from the 1860s, the rest by daughter Florence C. Hunt in a later era.

Sadly, the presentation page is half torn away and is missing the names of the person who presented the album to Hattie at Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on June 21, 1860 and Hattie's name, which might have included her full name.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 20 of Hattie's relatives and friends, as well as five hand-colored botanical prints.  The title page is missing, but the album may have been produced by J. C. Riker or another quality printer of the era.

An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Assuming I have the correct Hattie, Harriet Naomi Burbank was born January 27, 1845 at Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of blacksmith David Burbank and Elizabeth (?) Burbank.  Hattie's Massachusetts birth record does not provide the maiden name of her mother, unless her mother was also a Burbank.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in.

According to the History of the Town of Antrim, New Hampshire: From Its Earliest Settlement to June 27, 1877, with a Brief Genealogical Record of All the Antrim Families, by Warren Robert Cochrane and published by 1880 by Warren Steam Printing Press, Hattie married David Franklin Hunt, a native of Hancock, New Hampshire, in 1864.

In 1868 they moved to Antrim, New Hampshire for a few years, left for a couple years and returned to Antrim in 1873.  The 1910 Census shows David and Harriet at Sodus, New York, where David was manufacturing an apple processing machine.  They were back at Antrim where David died in 1912.  Hattie died in 1918.  They're buried in the Maplewood Cemetery at Antrim, New Hampshire, along with daughter Florence Caroline (Hunt) Madden and husband Thomas Madden.

They had at least two children, daughters Antoinette A. Hunt and Florence Caroline Hunt.  As mentioned above, Florence inscribed three pages in the album, including one page with a sketch of a house, perhaps after the house where she grew up.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or an alternate theory of Hattie's identity, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s-1902 Autograph Album of Lucy, possibly of the Cobb or Freeman Families, with Inscriptions from Maine, Massachusetts & New Hampshire

Autograph album that belonged to Lucy, with inscriptions dating from the 1880s to 1902, from California, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, most of them from Massachusetts.

Sadly, there's no ownership page with Lucy's name, but the entry of Elmer S. Church, presumably Elmer Sprague Church, of Nevada City, California is directed to "Aunt Lucy".

Lucy may have been related to the Cobb and/or Freeman families of Eastham, Massachusetts, based on the following:
  • Inscription of Susan C. (Young) Hussey, wife of John Freeman Hussey of Winterport, Maine, and Newburgh, Maine.  She called herself Lucy's aunt.  John's mother was a Freeman and may have been related to the Freemans from Eastham, Massachusetts.
  • Inscription of E. Nannie Cobb of Worcester, Massachusetts; presumably Emily Nancy Cobb
  • Inscription of Elmer S. Church of Nevada City, California.  He called himself Lucy's nephew.  Elmer Sprague Church was the son of George Almen Church and Estelle Dorcas (Cobb) Church.

If you are able to tie all of these people together and identify which Lucy was the owner of this album, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the inscriptions of 9 of Lucy's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Photograph/Autograph Album with Gem Photographs and 5 inscriptions, possibly1860s, possibly Maine

Photograph/autograph album presumably from the 1860s era and possibly from Maine.  It contains 5 gem-sized photographs, not identified, and five inscriptions.  Whether any of the inscribers are shown in the photographs, I don't know.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" by 3-1/2"; many pages were removed at some point, so I can only imagine what insights they would have brought to the table.

The inscriptions of two of the people are what leads me to believe that the album might have belonged to a Maine resident - assuming I've identified them correctly:
  • R. S. Webster, who inscribed his page at Portland, but did not designate a State; he may have been clothing merchant Richard S. Webster, a native of Standish, Maine
  • Nellie R. Barrelle, who might have been Rhoda Ellen Barrell, "Nellie", daughter of Hon. Elijah Barrell.  Nellie did not marry until about 1863, which, assuming she's the correct Nellie, would help date the album.  Nellie would marry:
    • Lindley Franklin Lemont, also known as Frank L. Lemont, whose Civil War letters are included in the Paul W. Bean Civil War Papers at the University of Maine.  One source noted that Lemont, a Captain, was "shot with the most bullets".  He married Nellie about 1863 and died in 1864.
    • Virgil Horace Sprague of Greene, Maine.  According to The History of Androscoggin County Maine, edited by Georgia Drew Merrill published in 1891, Virgil and Nellie married on July 5, 1868.

Two of the other other inscribers were from Germany and Spain, and the third also had a foreign sounding name.  They may have been mariners.
  • Rudolph Schroeder of Bremen, Germany
  • Enrique ? of Madrid
  • Gustave S. ?

If you can tease out the names, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The photographs: [click on an image to enlarge it]

One (or more) page is missing after the page with the photograph above.  The next three photographs appear on the pages preceding the page inscribed by R. S. Webster.

The last photograph appears on the page after that inscribed by R. S. Webster.

If you recognize any of these names or the photographs, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1888-1904 Autograph Album of Harvey Elliott Mayberry or Mabry of Dugspur, Virginia

1888-1904 autograph album that belonged to Harvey Elliott Mayberry, "Elliott", of Dugspur, Virginia.
Several inscribers wrote Elliott's surname as Maberry, and one who called herself Elliott's cousin wrote her name as Ella Mabry, which appears to have been spelling that Elliott's father used.  Elliott's gravestone, however, is etched Mayberry.

Elliott inscribed the dedication page.

Surnames in the Album:
  • Booker  (2)
  • Dehaven
  • Gardner  (3)
  • Goad
  • Hylton
  • Mabry or Mayberry (2)
  • Martin
  • Meredith  (2)
  • Semones  (3)
  • Simpkins  (2)
  • Smith
  • Vaughn

Two of the pages include gem-sized photographs, one of them presumably inscribed by Elliott's first wife Susan (Simpkins) Mabry in 1890, with photographs of herself and Elliott.  Susan died in 1904.

The album measures approximately 6" by 4" and is partially disbound.  It contains the sentiments of 25 of Elliott's relatives and friends, three photographs and a newspaper clipping of the poem "Love Song of the Future".  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to information on his gravestone, Harvey Elliott Mayberry was born 3 September 1866 and died December 3, 1953 (indexed as December 4 on the Find a Grave memorial).  His parents were Greenberry Mabry and Mary Louisa (Sutphin) Mabry.

Eliott married Sue Simpkins, daughter of Calvin Simpkins and Elizabeth (Wilson, I think) on  March 4, 1889 in Pulaski County, Virginia.  Sue inscribed a page in the album before their marriage, with her residence given as Snowville, Virginia, and, as noted above, may have been the inscriber of the page with the two photographs, shown just above.

Before Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry died in 1904, she and Elliott had at least two children, son Oscar who died in infancy in 1892 and son Fred, born in 1894.

Inscriber Delia Simpkins seemed to be referring to a death, perhaps that of Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry.

On December 4, 1904, Elliott married Emma Florence Yearout, daughter of Jacob Yearout and Nancy (Lawrence) Yearout.  Emma was born, according to her gravestone, on August 27, 1879.  A Virginia Births and Christenings record shows August 10, 1880; although it's indexed as a birth, perhaps it was the date of her christening.

Elliott and Emma had at least three children, daughters Bettie, Ethel and Ora.

Harvey Elliott Mayberry and his wives Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry and Emma Florence (Yearout) Mayberry are buried in the Simpkinstown Cemetery at Simpkinstown, Virginia.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The other person who affixed a photograph to her page was Sarah V. Booker.

Inscribers in the Album

  • Friend
  • Your cousin, M. M., inscribed at Star, Virginia, in December 1888
  • Page inscribed "Dear Aunt Necy"
  • "true friend and companion"; inscribed on Christmas day 1904.  Perhaps inscribed by Elliott's second wife Emma Florence (Yearout) Mabry shortly after their marriage of December 4, 1904
  • "Your devoted companion", inscribed on March 1, 1890.  Gem sized photographs of a woman and a man pasted on the page.  Could the page have been inscribed by Elliott's first wife Sue (Simpkins) Mabry, and the photographs that of herself and Elliott?
  • M. Ellen Booker of Round Peak, North Carolina
  • Sarah V. Booker; she pasted her gem-sized photograph on the page.
  • Laura E. Dehaven; inscribed on January 24, 1889.  Not sure of surname
  • Adina C. Gardner; inscribed on January 24, 1889
  • Delita V. Gardner; inscribed on January 4, 1889

  • Ella Mabry; inscribed on October 14, 1888 at Hillsville, Virginia.  Elliott's cousin
  • Harvey Elliott Maberry or Mabry of Dugspur, Virginia; album owner; he inscribed a dedication page.
  • Lucy E. Martin of Star, Virginia; inscribed on January 30, 1889
  • Mollie N. Meredith; inscribed on October 5, 1888 at Max [?] Valley, Virginia
  • Virginia L. Meredith; inscribed on October 5, 1888 at Mountain Home, Virginia

  • M. M. Semones; inscribed on January 23, 1889
  • S. E. Semones; perhaps Sarah E. Semones
  • Delia Simpkins; a sad entry that might have been inscribed upon the death of Sue (Simpkins) Mabry?
  • Sue Simpkins; inscribed at Snowville, Virginia, in October 1888.  She would be become Elliott's wife in 1889; she died in 1904.
  • J. C. Smith

1880s Autograph Album of Emma E. Smith of Winona, Minnesota

1880s autograph album that belonged to Emma E. Smith of Winona, Minnesota.  The album apparently came to light years later as one of the last pages contains the writing or one or both of Emma's children with husband Henry A. Stillinger.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 50 of Emma's relatives, friends and teacher, Sarah H. Strong.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to Census information, Emma E. Smith was born about 1865, though her gravestone shows 1872.  Her parents were Alvah Samuel Smith and Sarah Sophia (Richardson) Smith, who were born in New York and Ontario, respectively.

Emma's mother and three of her sisters, Maria Alice Smith; Inez Irene Smith and Lydia Augusta Smith, inscribed a shared page in the album.

One inscriber, Ella M. Peckham of Winona, Minnesota, called herself Emma's cousin.

It appears that that Emma visited New York in 1886, as several people from the Williams family and H. G. Hall inscribed pages at Rushford, New York in that year.  Perhaps she met her future husband on this or another trip.

About 1895 Emma married Henry A. Stillinger, a New York native whose parents had earlier emigrated from Germany.  Emma and Henry had at least two children, Clyde Smith Stillinger and Edna Claribel Stillinger.

According to Find-a-Grave, Emma died in 1919, Henry in 1952 and Claribel in 1954; they're buried in the Buffalo Cemetery at Cheektowaga, New York.  Clyde outlived them by many years.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1877-1880s Autograph Album of Annette Stevens, "Nettie", of Oakfield, New York; Student at Cary Collegiate Seminary

Autograph album presented as a gift at Christmas 1877 by Henry Ebenezer Stevens to his sister Annette, "Nettie", of Oakfield, New York.  Many of the inscriptions were made by Nettie's fellow students at the Cary Collegiate Seminary.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 100 of Nettie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  Many of the inscriptions are faint.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Annette Stevens, "Nettie", was born about September 1861, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Stevens.  Nettie's brothers, Henry Ebenezer Stevens, named on the presentation page shown farther above, inscribed individual pages in her album.

I don't believe Nettie ever married.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment for the benefit of fellow researchers.
