1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Howard Henry Farrar of Dickvale, Peru, Maine

Autograph album that was given to Howard Henry Farrar of Dickvale, Peru, Maine, by his mother Henrietta (Bishop) Farrar on December 15, 1887 - although there are autographs from earlier than that.  It's possible that she wrote the page in the new year of 1887 and meant to note Christmas 1886.

On the inside front cover:

The presentation page:

The album measures a bit less than 8" by 5" and contains 7 colored pages, six with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quotations, and the sentiments of over fifty of Howard's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Howard Henry Farrar was born August 14, 1867 at Woodstock, Maine, the son of Almon Joseph Farrar and Henrietta (Bishop) Farrar.  Henrietta inscribed another page in her son's album, on November 21, 1887.

Howard's sister Jennie E. Farrar also inscribed a page, on December 5, 1887.

Many other relatives inscribed pages in Howard's album, including aunts, uncles and cousins; see the alphabetical list of inscribers at the end of this post.

Interestingly, one of Howard's aunts, by marriage, was Angelia (Whitman) Farrar.   See another post that highlights 5 letters written to Angelia at Grafton, Maine, by her mother Delphina (Perham) Whitman of Bryant Pond, Maine.

Angelia, who called herself Angela W. Farrar, inscribed a page at Grafton, Maine, on March 8, 1887. Angelia was married to Rufus Farrar, Jr., brother of Howard's father Almon Joseph Farrar.

Howard Henry Farrar married twice: Hattie Fuller in 1892 and Celestia Butterfield in 1896.  Howard died in 1921 and, according to a memorial on Find a Grave, Howard, is buried in East Dixfield, Maine, with his second wife and their children.

  1. I like how you organize the surnames into a list and list relationships for the inscribers. I am in the process of making a blog post about my great grandmother's autograph book from the 1890's. Great post!
