1804 Freeport, Maine, Document: Jacob Reed Promises to Pay Nathaniel Hobart

Handwritten document, approximately 7-1/2" by 3-3/4".

Freeport Dec. 28th - 1804

Att Sixty days after date, I promise to pay Nath Hobart or his Order twenty Six Dollars & thirty Seven Cents.  For Value received.  Interest till paid -
Jacob Reed
$26.37
Att J. Stockbridge [possibly Jas., abbreviation for James Stockbridge; or Jos., abbreviation for Joseph Stockbridge or Josiah Stockbridge; or possibly John Stockbridge, who was a town official previous to 1804.]

At least one payment, that of February 25, 1805 [and possibly another in May 1805], is noted on the reverse of the document.

From brief research, I found a Jacob Reed at Freeport, Maine, born in Maine in 1787.  He married Celia Stockbridge, who was presumably a relative of the witness to this document.

I haven't found anything on a Nathaniel Hobart who lived at Freeport, Maine during that time, but he may have lived elsewhere in Maine or beyond.

Franklin Stanwood painted a Stockbridge homestead at Freeport, Maine, in 1880.

If you have information on Nathaniel Hobart, Jacob Reed or J. Stockbridge, or if you can interpret the handwriting on the reverse, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

    1. Hope someone with information connects with you! I purchased the document on the basis of its Maine connection, but it's not my family.

  2. I have Stockbridge in my ancestry. John Stockbridge lived in Freeport prior to moving to Byron, ME. He had a son John (1787-1855) who was a lawyer. He was mostly around Byron, Andover, Dixfield area, but could have a tie to the Stockbridge home in Freeport. Would like to know more about the Stockbridge house.
