Photograph of Mary Jane Ritchie, born about 1868 at Edinburgh, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Ritchie

Photograph of a woman identified on the reverse as Mary Jane Ritchie, born about 1868 at Edinburgh, Scotland, the second daughter of Alexander Ritchie.   The photograph was taken at the studio of R. Forbes, 54 Grafton Street, Dublin, Ireland.

The photograph itself measures about 5-3/4" x 4"; the entire piece measures about 8-3/4" x 6-1/4".  It was purchased at Ellsworth, Maine, but that may have nothing to do with its provenance.

The reverse also mentions that she was a sister of Isa or Ira Ritchie.  An online tree for a Mary Ritchie shows a father Alexander Ritchie and sister Isabella Ritchie, and mother Mary McDonald.  But daughter Mary, born about 1870 in Scotland, was shown as the third daughter.  It's possible an earlier daughter did not survive to adulthood.

There's a birth record for a  Mary Jane Ritchie born 13 July 1871 at Leith, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Ritchie and Christian Alison (Chisholm) Ritchie.

According to the writing on reverse, this Mary Jane Ritchie went to Ireland and was a first cousin to the mother of the person who wrote the text.  If I'm reading the initials correctly, the mother was M.S.R. Linton.  Linton is presumably her married name.  Perhaps the R stands for Ritchie.

If you recognize Mary Jane or her family history from the clues on this photograph, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!
