1870s Autograph Album of Julia Etta Ayers of Cornish, New Hampshire

1870s autograph album of Julia Etta Ayers of Cornish, New Hampshire.

She didn't sign a page herself, but H. C. Leavitt of Cornish, New Hampshire inscribed a page to her on 3 December 1873.

The album is approximately 5-1/4" x 4" and is relatively thick.  It contains 71 pages signed by Miss Etta's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Julia Etta Ayers was born 26 May 1858 at Cornish, New Hampshire, the daughter of Edwin T. and Julia A. (Freeman) Ayers, who were born at Cornish, New Hampshire, and Windsor, Vermont, respectively.

Julia's mother, Julia A. (Freeman) Ayers, signed a page in her album.

Several people named Freeman signed pages, at least one of them twice.

On 13 May 1886 at Claremont, New Hampshire, Julia Etta Ayers married widower Frank William True, son of Bradley and Sarah (Smith) True.  He was born 28 March 1853 at Lebanon, New Hampshire.  His first wife, Ida Burnap, whom he had married in 1875, died in 1882.

Frank and Julia Etta farmed at Plainfield, New Hampshire.  I don't know if there were any children from either marriage; if there were, they weren't listed on any of the Census enumerations.

If you have corrections to the information above, or additions to it, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Julia Etta's cousin Nellie E. Freeman of Claremont, New Hampshire, signed a page on 26 December 1875.

J. G. Freeman of Cornish, New Hampshire sketched a bird on 26 December 1873.

1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Emma Florence Lord of New Hampshire and Massachusetts

1870s/1880s autograph album of Emma Florence Lord of New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 23 pages signed by Emma herself, her relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

As the title of the album implies, there are pages with illustrations of different flora interspersed throughout the album.  Some signers used those pages to leave their sentiments.

From online research, hopefully correct, and hopefully with the correct Emma F. Lord: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Emma Florence Lord was born 9 September 1863 at Freedom, New Hampshire, the daughter of Albion and Orinda (Fowler) Lord, who were also Freedom, New Hampshire, natives.

Emma's paternal grandparents were William and Betsey (Moulton) Lord.  Her maternal grandparents were Stephen and Sarah (Mills) Fowler.

At some point, Emma's parents moved their family to Charlestown, Massachusetts.   The signers in Emma's autograph album seemed to consist mainly of her schoolmates in Charlestown and Boston. Charlestown is a part of Boston.

On 15 June 1887 at Boston, Massachusetts, Emma married John Jacob Bradbury, son of Albion and Elizabeth Liscomb (Wentworth) Bradbury, who were born at Limerick, Maine, and Acton, Maine, respectively.  John was born 18 January 1857 at Limerick, Maine.

John and Emma settled at Somerville, Massachusetts, where John was a merchant, and raised at least two children, daughters Katherine and Elizabeth.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Hattie S. Furbush of Portland, Maine, signed a page at Freedom, New Hampshire, on 22 August 1878.  She called herself Emma's cousin.

Two other people named Furbush signed pages in Emma's album.  Ida E. Furbush signed a page on 27 August 1878.

E. W. Furbush signed a page at Freedom, New Hampshire, in the summer of 1878.

I'm wondering if the grandchildren of William and Betsey (Moulton) Lord and/or Stephen and Sarah (Mills) Fowler were in the habit of spending vacation time at Freedom, New Hampshire.

E. F. Chaffee of Boston, Massachusetts, signed a page on 7 July 1878.  He mentioned the street address 435 Main Street.  I'm not sure what the initials "B. H. D." represent.  He may have been the Emory Franklin Chaffee who became a Somerville, Massachusetts, druggist and real estate developer.  One of Emma's paternal great aunts married a William Chaffee, so E. F. may have been a related to Emma's family in some way.

Here is an example of an illustrated page, signed by Annie M. McGowan of Boston, Massachusetts, on 17 June 1877.

Alphabetical list of the signers in Emma's album: [Note, given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • Ada E.Bowler of Charlestown, Massachusetts, signed on 27 June 1880
  • Edna E. Buck of Boston, Massachusetts, signed on 24 June 1878

1880s Autograph Album of May Starr of Wilbur, Oregon, in Douglas County

1880s autograph album of May Starr of Wilbur, Oregon, in Douglas County.

The album is a large one, approximately 8-1/2" x 7" and contains 96 pages of sentiments from May herself, her relatives and friends.  Many of the signers filled the entire page.  The pages are very wrinkly and didn't scan well.

Several of the signers were students at Oakland Academy and Umpqua Academy in Oregon.

An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

May Starr was born 6 July 1862 in Douglas County, Oregon, the daughter of Felix and Icephene (Willits) Starr, who were born in Virginia and Indiana, respectively.

May's parents had come to Oregon from Indiana in an ox cart.  Her father later returned to Indiana to acquire a herd of well-bred horses, which he drove to Oregon.

The name Starr was a variation of the German name Stoehr, which had turned into Stehr, Stair and Starr in the United States. Some of the signers in the album were named Stair.

I found an extensive history of the Stoehr family here.  It includes an          account of May's family's move west.  In the Centennial History of Oregon, 1811 to 1912, Volume 4, a biography of May's future husband, James L. Cole, also has insights into the Starr family.

May's sister Lilly and brothers Felix and James signed pages in her album.

Sister Lily D. Starr of Wilbur, Oregon, signed a page on 4 January 1881.  There's a later  message from Lilly on the same page where she signed her name as Lilly and a "star" symbol.

May's brother Felix Starr signed a page on 14 July 1881.

May's brother James P. Starr of Wilbur, Oregon, signed a page on 12 February 1881.

Many other relatives from Oregon and Indiana signed pages.  Refer to the list below.

On 25 November 1886, May married James L. Cole, son of James C. and Louisa (Leeper) Cole.  He was born 21 September 1860 at Coles Valley in Douglas County, Oregon.

James and May lived in Douglas County, Oregon, eventually at May's father's farm.  They had, I believe, four chidren, three of whom lived to adulthood.

Their first child, Grace May Cole, signed a page in her mother's album.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Malvina Evalina Keeler, teacher at Keystone Academy at Factoryville, Pennsylvania

1880s autograph album of Malvina Evalina Keeler, "Eva", compiled while she was a teacher at Keystone Academy in Factoryville, Pennsylvania.  She received the album as a Christmas present in 1879.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains 79 pages signed by Eva herself, her relatives, friends and students.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Malvina Evalina Keeler was born 28 April 1860 at Keelersburg, Pennsylvania, daughter of Heister and Lois Adeline (Sharpe) Keeler, who were born in Pennsylvania and in New York respectively.

Eva's paternal grandparents were Asa S. and Elizabeth (Newman) Keeler.  Her maternal grandparents were Elisha and Mary (Bixby) Sharpe.

On 28 May 1887, Eva became the second wife of Edward Fayett Avery, whose first wife, Mary Esther (Harding) Avery, had died in 1883.  I don't believe there were any children from either marriage.

According to the 1900 Census, Edward was a dentist, and Eva was still teaching.

If you have corrections to the information above, or additions to it, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Eva's cousin, M. Addie Jenkins of Elmira, New York, signed a page on 29 January 1882.  After a bit of research, I believe that the mother of M. Addie Jenkins was Dinah (Sharpe) Jenkins, sister to Eva's mother Lois Adeline (Sharpe) Jenkins.

Zebedee S. Thahoo of Rangoon, British Burma, signed a page at Keystone Academy on 12 March 1883.

G. A. Transue, Class of 1883 in the Commercial Department of Keystone Academy did an intricate sketch of a bird an spider web.

A. H. Fassett also sketched a bird.

I loved this page, signed by Harriet M. Loomis of Scranton, Pennsylvania, signed on 2 March 1883.  She called herself "Teacher of Yellocution and Roarotory at Keystone Academy".

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Ezoa Jenkins of Thompson, Pennsylvania

1880s autograph album of Ezoa Jenkins of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  I found her given name as Ezoica and as Annie Ezoa and Ezoa Annie.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/2" and contains 40 pages signed by Ezoa herself (or the person who presented her with the album), her relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ezoa Jenkins was born 6 August 1878 at Thompson, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Henry and Jane A. (Legg) Jenkins.  I don't have information on Henry, but there were some people named Jenkins who signed pages in Ezoa's album, other than her brother Earle and herself.

Ezoa's maternal grandparents were Samuel Legg and his second wife Rhoda Anna.  Jane may have been the only child from this marriage, but there were several children from Samuel's first marriage to Mary Parminter, including at least two who signed pages in Ezoa's album [see below].

On 27 December 1899 at Thompson, Pennsylvania, Ezoa married Elbert Ward Pickering, son of Charles Zaletin Pickering and Lovanda (Nye) Pickering.  Elbert was born 16 October 1878 at Jackson Township, Pennsylvania.

The couple lived in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  Elbert was a merchant.  If they had children, they weren't mentioned in the Censuses.

As mentioned above, Ezoa's brother Earle W. Jenkins signed a page in her album.

Ezoa's Uncle Ike, who may have been Isaac Legg, a half brother to Ezoa's mother Jane A. (Legg) Jenkins, signed a page.  It was this page that gave me the clue that Ezoa also had the name Annie.

Mrs. Anna V. Mumford signed a page on 4 February 1888 while she was at Philippopolis, Bulgaria.  This was Anna Victoria Legg, another half sibling to Ezoa's mother Jane A. (Legg).  Mrs. Anna Victoria (Legg) Mumford was the widow of Oliver Mumford, who died in the Civil War while leading a charge at Petersburg.

Another aunt signed a page in Ezoa's album.  She was Anna Malpass, second wife of Daniel Malpass, of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  I researched to see if Anna might have been a sister to Ezoa's father Henry Jenkins, but wasn't able to establish a relationship.  Hopefully a reader will have more knowledge and will leave a comment.  Anna's husband Daniel Malpass also signed a page.  He dated his page 23 February 1889.

Kate M. Jenkins of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, signed a page in Ezoa's album.  I found a Kate M. Jenkins married to a William Jenkins.  I wonder if William and Ezoa's father Henry Jenkins were related, perhaps even brothers.

Two of Ezoa's teachers signed pages in her album.  Nellie M. Clancy of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, signed a page on 10 March 1887.

A. N. Brundage signed page on 3 November 1890.  Ezoa was married by then, but perhaps A. N. Brundage was a teacher from Ezoa's past schooling or was a Bible study teacher.

If you have corrections to the information above, or additions to it, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Alphabetical list of signers: [Note: given names within a specific surname may not be in alphabetical order.]

  • Uncle Ike, inscribed his page to his niece Miss Anna E. Jenkins; perhaps Isaac Legg, half brother of Ezoa's mother

1880s Autograph Album of Harietta "Hattie" Kindt of Drehersville, Pennsylvania

1880s autograph album of Harietta "Hattie" Kindt of Drehersville, Pennsylvania.

The album's front cover is missing.  The image above is of the page that Hattie's brother Nathan Wesley Kindt signed at West Brunswick, Pennsylvania, on 20 February 1882.

The album is approximately 7" x 4" and may be missing some pages, in addition to the lost front cover.  There are 40 pages signed by Hattie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

There's also a real photo postcard enclosed, with a young man identified as perhaps Uncle Andie.

The postcard was originally intended to be given to Edna Noecker.  Perhaps a reader will be able to identify the young man from the clues or from family albums.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Harietta Kindt was born about 1858, the daughter of Nathan E. and Catharine (Miller) Kindt.  Nathan's obituary in the Kutztown Patriot issue of 22 July 1899 mentioned that he was born at Maidencreek, Pennsylvania.  He later moved to Drehersville, Pennsylvania and went into the "store business".

Nathan's obituary, published in 1899, indicated that Harietta had married George Kramer.  Hopefully the spelling of Harietta in the obituary is correct.  She could have been Harriet or Harrietta.

In addition to Hattie's brother Nathan Wesley Kindt, who signed the page at top, three of her other siblings signed pages.

Harvey Kindt of Drehersville, Pennsylvania, signed a page on 6 March 1882.

Alice S. Kindt signed a page at Drehersville, Pennsylvania, on 6 March 1882.

Emma Kindt signed a page at Drehersville, Pennsylvania, on 7 March 1882.

Two of Hattie's cousins signed pages, but did not give their surnames.  Cousin Bella signed a page at Drehersville, Pennsylvania, on 5 March 1883.

Another cousin signed a page at Maidencreek, Pennsylvania, in March 1882.  Since Hattie's father was born at Maidencreek, perhaps this cousin is from his line.

Several people with the surname of Miller signed pages.  They could have been relatives of Hattie through her mother's line.  See the list below for their names.

The future wife of Hattie's brother Nathan Wesley Kindt signed a page.  She was Loretta A. Miller, who signed at Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, on 21 March 1884.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1880s Autograph Album of Eda M. Cummings of Montague, Massachusetts

Note of August 2013: In response to a reader request, I've added another image, that of a page signed by Mary C. Stacy of Lowell, Massachusetts.

1880s autograph album given to Eda M. Cummings of Montague, Massachusetts as a Christmas present in 1882.  Her surname is also seen variantly as Comins, Cummins, etc.

The album is approximately 6" x 4" and contains 60 pages signed by Eda herself, her relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Eda M. Cummings was born about 1871, I think at Leverett, Massachusetts, the daughter of Charles L. and Mary E. (Hemenway) Cummings.  Eda's marriage record shows her father as William.

I believe Eda's paternal grandparents were Lyman and Eliza (Taylor) Cummings.  Her maternal grandparents were William and, possibly, Elsie, Hemenway.

About June 1891, Eda married Fred Erwin Cadwell, whose own autograph album was the subject of an earlier post.  Fred signed a page in Eda's album before they were married, on 12 July 1889.

One signer indicated she was Eda's sister, Rena Osgood of Northfield Farms, who signed a page on 27 July 1883.  She was Irena Roxanna Cummings, who was married to Warren S. Osgood.  Her husband and daughter also signed pages.

I believe Fred and Eda had at least one child, Helen, born 2 August 1892 at Montague, Massachusetts.

Mary C. Stacy of Lowell, Massachusetts, signed a page on 1 September 1883.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
